Developing Guidelines for Collaborative Spaces Supporting Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Teams

Kim, Kahyun 25 April 2013 (has links)
Communication deficiencies within interdisciplinary teams are known to reduce the effectiveness of those teams by causing erroneous behaviors (Alvarez & Coiera, 2006; Reader, Flin, & Cuthbertson, 2007). Also, many design defects have been attributed to communication breakdowns across disciplines (Chen & Lin, 2004). As the number of interdisciplinary teams in industry grows in order to adapt to dynamic business environments of the twenty-first century, providing an appropriate environment to improve interdisciplinary team effectiveness is critical for many organizations. In spite of its importance, little is known about what kind of environments support interdisciplinary team interactions. There were three objectives of this dissertation: 1) to investigate the influence of physical environment on the effectiveness of interdisciplinary engineering design teams, 2) to investigate the influence of interaction strategy design support on the effectiveness of interdisciplinary engineering design teams, 3) to construct behavioral indicators of successful interdisciplinary teamwork to design testing and design guidelines for interdisciplinary team collaboration spaces. To achieve these goals, the study was conducted in two phases. In Phase 1, the researcher conducted a direct observation of industry teams operating in the novel design space, the Kiva, at a design-consulting firm based in Pittsburgh, PA. The observation data provided 1) a list of significant participant behaviors to be examined and 2) interaction strategy design support (ISDS) procedures to be used during phase 2. Phase 2 was a laboratory-based 2x2 experimental study with physical room condition (Kiva vs. conference room) and interaction strategy design support (present vs. absent) as independent variables. The dependent variables were categorized as team process and output that measured team effectiveness. Overall, a significant interaction effect between the physical conditions and interaction strategy design support was found from all dependent measurements except for product evaluation. A significant main effect of physical conditions and interaction strategy support were found to a lesser extent. Based on the findings, testing methodology guidelines and design guidelines were developed. / Ph. D.

Co-morbidities of hearing loss in the preschool population.

Sewpersad, Varsha 05 September 2012 (has links)
Background: Many hearing impaired children present with one or more health-related conditions, in addition to hearing loss. Families and professionals are therefore faced with numerous challenges when a child presents with co-morbidities of hearing loss. The implications for assessment, management and educational placement of these children are numerous. Appropriate plans for holistic intervention and education are essential for the development of the child as well as improved life quality. This study therefore aimed to describe the co-morbidities that pre-school children with hearing loss present with at the Centre for Language and Hearing Impaired Children (CLAHIC), and its implications for management. Method: A descriptive, retrospective research design was employed for the purpose of this study. A non-probability, purposive sampling strategy was implemented to select the records of children diagnosed with a hearing loss, and who have attended CLAHIC from 1999 to 2010. The records of 62 children were reviewed. Results: The more prevalent co-morbidities identified in this study were fine motor delay, gross motor delay, visual motor integration disorder, bilateral integration disorder , apraxia of speech and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Further findings of the study indicated that the co-morbidities of hearing loss are independent of the degree of the hearing loss. It was however found that there is an increased risk for fine-motor difficulties across the sample. Implications: The findings of this research suggest that pre-school children with hearing loss, irrespective of degree of hearing loss, should be screened and or monitored for the risk of prevalent co-morbidities, such as fine and gross motor difficulties. A collaborative, holistic and multi-disciplinary team approach should be implemented to ensure that services are provided to improve the life quality and development of the hearing impaired child.

As incidências da psicanálise nas instituições de atendimento a crianças e adolescentes com transtornos psíquicos graves

Santos, Volmir Mielczarski dos January 2017 (has links)
The issues developed in the writing of this thesis are due to a path from an interdisciplinary psychoanalytic clinical practice in an institution. This practice has developed in different institutional contexts, both related to education and mental health, aimed at the treatment of children and adolescents with different difficulties related to their psychic constitution. In the course of these experiences, we are faced with the exigency of grounding our interventions. At the moment in which we passed to dedicate ourselves in these contexts to the creation of new clinical modalities of treatment, our work of grounding was directed to a theoretical-clinical elaboration of these modalities. In the present thesis, we seek to formalize this elaboration from an exercise of refinement of statements and concepts towards the possibility of sustaining a psychoanalytic praxis in teams and institutions. As well as Lacan formalized psychoanalytic act and discourse since the legacy psychoanalytic clinical method by Freud, we start from an initial premise: that we can in a homologous way highlight elements of a clinical praxis that, transposed to the work of the teams and institutions concerned with reception and treatment of children with autisms and psychoses, will favor the proposition of psychoanalytic clinical devices We take as a base for a methodological elaboration a dialogue with institutional experiences that organize the proposition of devices to treat children and adolescents with autisms and psychoses since the psychoanalytic framework. From the standout underlying logic to the organization of these institutions, we reflect on what minimum conditions are necessary in the insertion of treatment devices in teams and institutions, not necessarily psychoanalytic, so that we consider that we are working since the logic of a psychoanalytic clinical device. With the elements of our elaboration, we intend to offer theoretical-clinical tools to those professionals who are came across everyday with the challenges and impasses in the reception and treatment of children and adolescents with autisms and psychoses. Thus, it stimulates such the elaboration of the devices in progress as their creation in the spaces in which they are absent.

Chaplaincy Inclusion in Hospital Interdisciplinary Teams and Its Impact on Chaplains' Well-Being

Nzegwu, Chike 01 January 2018 (has links)
Healthcare providers may impede the delivery of spiritual and emotional support to patients and their families by healthcare professional chaplains if they misunderstand how to effectively use chaplains, who often prefer to be engaged sooner than they are. This issue prevents highly trained, board-certified professional chaplains from providing services, thereby impacting the quality of patient care. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine, through the lived experiences of professional chaplains, the extent to which chaplains feel that others perceive them as valued members of an interdisciplinary team (IDT), as well as to determine how team inclusion may impact chaplains' physical and emotional well-being. An adaptation of the antecedents and outcomes of inclusion theoretical framework was used. Research questions were developed to elicit to what extent professional chaplains perceived that they were valued members of IDTs and what impact inclusion had on their well-being A semistructured interview protocol with open-ended questions was used with 9 board-certified professional chaplains in the northeastern region of the United States.. Data were analyzed through coding and comparison of significant responses into units of meaning to reflect the phenomenon of participants' experiences. Key findings revealed that inclusion did have an impact on the well-being of chaplains, and its impact was perceived as positive. This study may contribute to positive social change by helping to initiate training and education programs for healthcare organizations that work with and employ professional chaplains to effectively integrate chaplains into IDTs, ensuring more timely evaluation and care planning for patients and their families to achieve greater wholeness and healing.

Obesidade mórbida : um estudo sobre as limitações, a auto-imagem e o tratamento cirúrgico /

Silveira, Tânia Aguila. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: The obesity is a disease of multifactorial etiology including factors psychological, physiologic, anatomical and social. That pathology is present in developed countries and in development. In Brazil the index has been growing quickly in all of the age groups and socioeconomic classes, demonstrating the nutritional transition of the malnutrition for the obesity. It was aimed at to investigate, through a qualitative approach of research in health, the influence of the socio-historical vision in the development and in the maintenance of the four women's obesity with age among 32 and 39 years, which got ready for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. It was still intended to characterize the theme "obesity" in the interviewees' vision; to understand her decision-making for the surgical method; to contribute for the invigoration of the interdisciplinary vision in the treatment of the obese morbid; to collaborate for the invigoration of the support program to the morbid obese patient in which the patients made pre-surgical attendance. Starting from the analysis of content of the interviews and of the contributions of the field diary it was possible to find thematic axes that guided our discussions. The results indicated damages emotional, social, biological and physicists resulting in dissatisfaction with the condition of they be obese, now because the limitations are very accentuated, causing them problems of health and physical discomfort, or because esthetically if they don't sit down appropriate with his weight. The collection of the society for the acquisition of an adjusted body to the effective patterns (thinness) it seems to be the factor of larger weight in the psychic suffering lived by the interviewees, taking them to the classification attempt wherein is accepted socially as the "normal" or the common, marginalizing their capacities and potentialities. The work of the interdisciplinary team will serve as effective tool for ... / Mestre

Vliv canisterapie na klienta s poruchami chování a sociální vztahů / The effect of canistherapy on the client with disorders of behaviour and social relations

PILÁTOVÁ, Kateřina January 2010 (has links)
The thesis was mainly aimed at the impact of canistherapy on the clients with behaviour and social anxiety disorders, their behaviour, social contacts and attitude to a living creature. The theoretical part of the thesis presents an overview of zootherapy and canistherapy terminology, outlines requisites of the practical part and defines behaviour and social anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. The outcome is represented by a multicase study on the basis of qualitative research technique. The multicase study offers a deep insight into three case studies, in details depicts particular techniques which are used in canistherapy, the process of canistherapy realised in children and adolescents with behaviour and social anxiety disorders. The findings of the research proved a positive impact of canistherapy, especially an AAT method, on the clients monitored. Based on these findings, canistherapy is highly recommended for this group of clients.

A “TRANSLATOR” TO BRIDGE DISCIPLINARY BOUNDARIES: AN EXPANSION OF AGENCY OF AN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER

Iryna V Ashby (12371233) 20 April 2022 (has links)

Interdisciplinary education has been viewed as a way to give an edge to graduates in terms of developing creativity, innovation, ability to synthesize knowledge, and develop a range of professional skills (Haynes, 2017). However, the push towards interdisciplinarity as opposed to a disciplinary field is a challenge due to strong educational traditions, power dynamics, academic freedom, as well as the power faculty has to form their areas of research interest and disciplines (Ashby & Exter, 2019; Becher & Trowler, 2001; Klein, 2006). Likewise, the diversity of members of an interdisciplinary team can lead to negative forces that can only be overcome with open communication and understanding of both boundaries and ways to address them. This means that an interdisciplinary team may need to have a translator to help build common knowledge, facilitate engagement, and address tacit issues. Instructional designers have the potential to play a translator role. Rooted across the author’s three publications, the focus of this dissertation is to establish the vision for instructional designers getting a more proactive role on an interdisciplinary program design team (translator agency), where mediation of knowledge is needed across faculty to build a successful program.

What is the Role of a Pharmacist in a Parkinson’s Disease Interdisciplinary Team?

Dhap, Jaswinder L. January 2021 (has links)
The care of people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) involves input from different healthcare professionals (HCPs). A literature search identified that the HCPs involved in PD multidisciplinary (MDT) clinics, including interdisciplinary team (IDT), varied both in the number and type of HCPs. None of the studies identified involved pharmacists. Pharmacists have shown benefits when working in MDTs for other long-term conditions (LTCs); however, their role in PD MDTs was identified as a gap in the literature. The aim of the study was to determine the role of pharmacists in a PD IDT. Patients attended a PD IDT clinic comprising PD nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and pharmacist. A mixed methods convergent design was used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative focus group and interview data were analysed using The Framework Method. Quantitative data analysis involved counts of HCP interventions. Pharmacists can support PD IDTs as they have in other LTC MDTs by conducting holistic medication reviews. Three new roles were identified for pharmacists in PD IDTs as: 1) independent prescribing, 2) supporting HCPS in their roles by supporting staff knowledge, and 3) leading the PD IDT clinics. Quantitative data showed the pharmacist made a medication review intervention for all patients. HCPs and patients identified the roles and value of involving pharmacists in PD IDTs. The PD IDT clinics offer a holistic approach to patient care and a greater opportunity for patients to be involved. The findings identified a ‘review-shared care template’ for PD IDTs and recommends development of a ‘pharmacist’s PD competency framework’.
