Σχεδιασμός και κατασκευή φάρων στην Ελλάδα / Design and construction of lighthouses in GreeceΑσκούνη, Δήμητρα 07 October 2011 (has links)
The present thesis deals with the planning and the manufacture of lighthouses in the Hellenic space and at the same time is investigated the birth of lighthouse network. Initially, become a extensive report and description in the lighthouses, presenting morphology and constructional characteristically. Aim of work is the search of elements that reveals the constructional structure of lighthouses and their pathology in connection with their period of manufacture as well as the approach in methods of re-establishment. Final objective is to electe their uniqueness as architectural manufactures and their coexistence with the environment in which they were manufactured. The units in which is separated the present thesis deal with the lighthouse as element historical, architectural, constructional, functional and technological value, and as monument that in certain cases is related to the world cultural heritage. Important part of thesis constitutes the historical examination of evolutionary course of lighthouses, from the beginning of their operation as tower of open flame, as the technological realizations of 18th century and his current form with dynamic characteristics of architectural approach.
The research is focused in lighthouses which are placed geographically in the region of Greece and for this reason will be presented certain characteristic examples so that becomes perceptible the necessity that concerns the re-establishment and their maintenance. Are reported the existing situation but also the causes of this situation. At the same time are reported methods of confrontation with fundamental objective the re-establishment of deteriorations and the appointment of these particularities of manufactures. Is investigated the reason for which has been decreased the number of active lighthouses in the duration of time and in who situation they are found today. Are examined the reasons of deteriorations that led to their current situation. The proposals of change of use of lighthouse are included in the work as parameters of their investigation of rehabilitation. Are proposed approximate ways of protection from the nature while at the same time is elected the change of use as capable parameter to save a lighthouse from his destruction.
From the sought objectives of work it is with diagnosis of pathology is achieved a serious study of re-establishment of lighthouse and moreover the knowledge that is acquired by the existing know-how in order that the planning of young person reflects his architectural and functional entity. The examination of historical past, constructional technology and architectural typology is judged essential so that becomes property of researcher and cover the needs for the re-establishment, maintenance and refurbisment including his existence in the modern data. In the structure of work he becomes perceptible that the significance of lighthouse does not stand only in the traditional stone lighthouse that is the first thought in the hearing of word lighthouse, but in that the lighthouse today can have also a new parallel perhaps significance via the uses that it might undertake beyond the technical part. In the work become categorization of lighthouses in characteristic units judging that it is fundamental importance for the evaluation of energies that was followed and energies that will follow in the future for the maintenance, repair and refurbisment. Finally are presented thoroughly in general conclusions on the parameters of maintenance and appointment of Greek lighthouse network.

Viscera(l) Views: Performing on the Brink of the HumanMacDonald, Shauna M. 01 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is a performative exploration of experience within our technoscientific--that is, technologically and scientifically saturated--world. Drawing upon posthumanism and cyborg studies and working through specific, mutated versions of performative inquiry and phenomenology, I aim to encourage creative public participation in technoscientific discourse. That is, I apply an adapted method (cyborg phenomenology) to my own staged personae performances of nonhuman entities in order to investigate technoscientific experience from a less anthrocentric perspective. My goal is to interrogate my performance experience in order to better understand the dynamics of agency and relationship within our technologically infused world, and to employ performance and performative writing as pedagogical tools for educating others about these dynamics. This document might be best read as an example of performative inquiry as a useful approach to the study of technoscience and its consequences. As a whole, this dissertation is a call for, theorization with, and performative demonstration of artful participation in the multi-layered discourses of technology and science that impact the lives of all beings in our world. It is an experiential experiment, an exploration of possibility, and a beginning.

A LighthouseWeppler, Carly Patricia 07 June 2012 (has links)
This lighthouse is a visual anchor from land and sea. Its three concrete towers reach 250 feet tall with a base diameter of 75 feet. Accompanying its rotating spotlight is a central spotlight, lighting the core of the tower vertically and continuing into the sky. Nested 150 feet up the tower is the residence for the lighthouse keeper. Siting at a high elevation along a shear cliff face, the often fog shrouded tower is a strong light signal for voyagers at sea. / Master of Architecture

This essay focuses on the character of Lily Briscoe in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. From a gender perspective it discusses Lily's striving to exceed her socially constructed position as a woman by attempting to be an artist. At the beginning of the twentieth century women were supposed to be housewives rather than artists. This ideology of femininity held women back from achieving anything outside the home, and forced women to attempt to escape their femininity in order to pursue their dreams. This essay discusses Lily's efforts to escape her femininity by attempting to transcend her body and by striving to achieve an androgynous mind.

BeaconEroche, Samantha 01 May 2017 (has links)
Beacon is a short, relatively low production value screenplay about two people coming to know each other better, about them coming to know themselves better and to grow as human beings. When Kate Clarence realizes she’s discovered the journal of her favorite pen-named author from childhood—“C. Rimes”—she embarks on a journey to return it to him, whoever he is. She’s delinquent on her rent, her bookshop’s failing, she’s far from her landlocked Midwest home and family, and she’s single; the obligation to return the journal is a welcomed adventure and reprieve. However, when she comes to the conclusion that C. Rimes meant for her to find the journal because he’s in love with her and wants to reveal who he is to the world, the situation gets complicated. A lighthouse on the coast of Maine will beckon her to a special meeting with the mysterious C. Rimes and serve as her guiding light while she gropes through the dark to find him—and who he is.

Para além do guia dos navegantes : o farol de Maceió (1827-1951) / Beyond the sailor s guide : the lighthouse of Maceió (1827-1951)Fortes, Cynthia Nunes da Rocha 11 March 2011 (has links)
