Broadband over Power Line (BPL) technology has garnered significant attention lately due to recent advancements in solid state technologies and channel coding schemes. The successful application of BPL technology for in-home automation and networking has led to suggestions of applying BPL in other systems including ships. The application of BPL technology using the Shipboard Power System (SPS) as a potential communications network for ship automation systems has been proposed, to achieve recent U.S. Navy ship management concepts geared toward reducing ship manning while improving operational efficiency. This thesis presents an analytical model developed to examine the channel response characteristics and estimated throughput capacity of SPS cables. The work used a multiconductor transmission line theory based approach to model the channel response of SPS distribution lines and estimated the channel throughput capacity using a “water-filling” communication technique. This work found that BPL using the SPS holds a strong potential for use as a communications network for ship communication systems.

Analysis of Microstrip Lines on Substrates Composed of Several Dielectric Layers under the Application of the Discrete Mode MatchingSotomayor Polar, Manuel Gustavo January 2008 (has links)
Microstrip structures became very attractive with the development of cost-effective dielectric materials. Among several techniques suitable to the analysis of such structures, the discrete mode matching method (DMM) is a full-wave approach that allows a fast solution to Helmholz equation. Combined with a full-wave equivalent circuit, the DMM allows fast and accurate analysis of microstrips lines on multilayered substrates. The knowledge of properties like dispersion and electromagnetic fields is essential in the implementation of such transmission lines. For this objective a MATLAB computer code was developed based on the discrete mode matching method (DMM) to perform this analysis. The principal parameter for the analysis is the utilization of different dielectric profiles with the aim of a reduction in the dispersion in comparison with one-layer cylindrical microstrip line, showing a reduction of almost 50%. The analysis also includes current density distribution and electromagnetic fields representation. Coplanar microstrip structures placed on dielectric substrates
are used as high frequency electro-optic modulators. The method of
lines, a mathematical technique for solving partial differential
equations, has been applied to solve for the propagation
characteristics of such a configuration.
It has been determined that simple transmission line models
are adequate to describe this system. The propagation
characteristics are expressed in terms of the equivalent impedance
and the phase velocity of the signal on the microstrip. In order to
maximize the effective bandwidth of the modulator, the impedance is
matched to that of the surrounding dielectric substrate, and the
difference in the phase velocities of the two signals is minimized.
The numerical technique developed here allows for the analysis
of inhomogeneous dielectric substrates, so that trench structures for
tuning the propagation characteristics to their desired values can be
modelled.
The numerical results for typical structures are presented, and
suggest that the method of lines is a viable one for analyzing these

Analysis of interacting discontinuities in microstrips by mode-matching techniqueKapoor, Sunil 31 July 1992 (has links)
In this thesis a numerical technique to model general microstrip asymmetric and
multiple step discontinuities is presented. The method is based on a magnetic wall
waveguide model that is assumed to be valid for describing the electromagnetic fields
associated with the microstrip line and in the vicinity of microstrip discontinuities.
The fields are expanded in the uniform regions and the mode-matching method is
applied at the discontinuities to analyze for the frequency dependent transmission
properties of the multi ports. The generalized scattering matrix technique is used to
model cascaded interacting discontinuities and is used to compute the properties of
double-step and multi port structures. The generalized scattering matrix formulation
takes into account the scattering phenomena of the dominant and all of the higher-order
modes including evanescent ones.
The validity of this model has been discussed extensively, and it is shown that the
model can be used to describe the microstrip discontinuities with acceptable
accuracy. The technique is applied (1) to study the transmission characteristics of
asymmetric step discontinuities; (2) to design a filter for a desired frequency range
using interacting asymmetric double step micros trip line; and (3) to design a new
nominal 3db power devider of large bandwidth consisting of a three port rectangular
patch. The techniques and models presented can be used in computer-aided analysis

Evaluating the toxicity of eight reactive environmental contaminants by monitoring three measures of cell viability in two fish cell linesEl-Sweisi, Wail January 2009 (has links)
As fish cell cultures continue to be explored as alternatives to whole fish for evaluating the toxicity of environment chemicals, technical issues have emerged that influence results and thus need to be understood and standardized. These include carrier solvents, dosing protocols, exposure vessel, exposure media, viability endpoints, and cell lines. Some of these factors have been explored in this thesis for eight reactive contaminants exhibiting varied physicochemical properties using the rainbow trout cell lines RTgill-W1 and RTL-W1. Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was used as a reference (control) chemical. Cell viability was evaluated with alamar Blue, carboxyfluoroscein diacetate acetoxymethyl ester and neutral red as measures respectively of metabolic activity, plasma membrane integrity, and lysosomal function. Experimental in vitro EC50 values were compared to 1) pre-existing in vivo LC50s from the fathead minnow database and 2) pre-existing in vitro EC50s from the Halle database. Results point to good in vitro/in vivo correlations for menadione, dichlorophene, hexachlorophene, and acrolein. Poor correlations were observed for allyl alcohol, 4-fluoroaniline, acetaldehyde, and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene due to a combination of solubility and volatility problems. Overall, the results suggest that the impact of different technical approaches on the evaluation of acute toxicity in vitro depends very much on the chemical class being investigated and less on the characteristics of the cell line. The in vitro cytotoxicity of reactive chemicals is challenging due to the nature of the chemicals’ physicochemical properties. Further improving the in vitro toxicity of reactive chemicals is a prerequisite for the ultimate goal of using fish cell cultures as acceptable, standard alternatives to the use of fish acute lethality assays.

A Broadband Passive Delay Line Structure in 0.18 Micron CMOS For A Gigabit Feed Forward EqualizerChandramouli, Soumya 01 November 2004 (has links)
This project focusses on the design of a high speed passive delay line for use in a Feed Forward Equalizer (FFE). The FFE is used to equalize a 20 Gbp/s throughput PAM-4 signal after transmission through a 20-inch FR4 backplane channel. Inductor electromagnetic simulations are used to design an inductor for use in the passive delay line and a lumped element inductor model is presented. Measurement results show performance of the delay line at 10 GSym/s.

Simulated Fatigue Damage Index on Mooring Lines of a Gulf of Mexico Truss Spar Determined from Recorded Field DataKiecke, Adam Fuller 2012 May 1900 (has links)
The Constitution Truss Spar, operated by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC), is located in Green Canyon Block 679 and 680 in a water depth of 1,500 m. It was installed in October of 2006 and has since weathered multiple hurricanes and other storms. The platform is equipped with an Environmental Platform Response Monitoring System (EPRMS) which records real-time motions, environmental parameters and loads. These measurements were used to hind-cast the platform mooring tensions and estimate fatigue damage index accrued over the short life (install to start of study, July 2010) of the platform. The study found that extreme events such as Hurricane Ike (~100 yr storm) accounted for considerably higher fatigue damage index than the total caused by other small storms likely to occur in the 20 year service life of the vessel. It is therefore a recommendation of this study that a design criterion for fatigue damage accrued during extreme events such as 100 yr hurricanes be considered in the design of station keeping systems in a similar manner to the guidelines found in API RP 2T (2010) for design of tension leg platforms.
