SDSS J163459.82+204936.0 is a local (z = 0.1293) infrared-luminous quasar with L-IR = 10(11.91) L-circle dot. We present a detailed multiwavelength study of both the host galaxy and the nucleus. The host galaxy, appearing as an early-type galaxy in the optical images and spectra, demonstrates violent, obscured star formation activities with SFR approximate to 140 M-circle dot yr(-1), estimated from either the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission or IR luminosity. The optical to NIR spectra exhibit a blueshifted narrow cuspy component in H beta, He I lambda lambda 5876, 10830, and other emission lines consistently with an offset velocity of approximate to 900 km s(-1), as well as additional blueshifting phenomena in high-ionization lines (e.g., a blueshifted broad component of He I lambda 10830 and the bulk blueshifting of [O III].5007), while there exist blueshifted broad absorption lines (BALs) in Na I. D and He I lambda lambda 3889, 10830, indicative of the active galactic nucleus outflows producing BALs and emission lines. Constrained mutually by the several BALs in the photoionization simulations with Cloudy, the physical properties of the absorption line outflow are derived as follows: density 10(4) < n(H) less than or similar to 10(5) cm(-3), ionization parameter 10(-1.3) less than or similar to U 10(-0.7), and column density 10(22.5) less than or similar to N-H less than or similar to 10(22.9) cm(-2), which are similar to those derived for the emission line outflows. This similarity suggests a common origin. Taking advantages of both the absorption lines and outflowing emission lines, we find that the outflow gas is located at a distance of similar to 48-65 pc from the nucleus and that the kinetic luminosity of the outflow is 10(44)-10(46) erg s(-1). J1634+2049 has a off-centered galactic ring on the scale of similar to 30. kpc that is proved to be formed by a recent head-on collision by a nearby galaxy for which we spectroscopically measure the redshift. Thus, this quasar is a valuable object in the transitional phase emerging out of dust enshrouding as depicted by the coevolution scenario invoking galaxy merger (or violent interaction) and quasar feedback. Its proximity enables our further observational investigations in detail (or tests) of the co-evolution paradigm.

In chapter 3, Design of a dual band branch line coupler and a dual band Wilkinson power divider are proposed using the novel dual band transmission line structure presented in the previous chapter. In chapter 4, Design of a tri band transmission line structure by extending the dual band structure is presented. The Conclusion and future work are presented in chapter 5.

June 2017 / The realization of robust, reliable and e cient data transmission have been the theme of
recent research, most importantly in real channel such as the noisy, fading prone power
line communication (PLC) channel. The focus is to exploit old techniques or create new
techniques capable of improving the transmission reliability and also increasing the transmission
capacity of the real communication channels. Multi-carrier modulation scheme such
as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) utilizing conventional single-carrier
modulation is developed to facilitate a robust data transmission, increasing transmission capacity
(e cient bandwidth usage) and further reducing design complexity in PLC systems.
On the contrary, the reliability of data transmission is subjected to several inhibiting factors
as a result of the varying nature of the PLC channel. These inhibiting factors include noise,
perturbation and disturbances. Contrary to the Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN)
model often assumed in several communication systems, this noise model fails to capture
the attributes of noise encountered on the PLC channel. This is because periodic noise or
random noise pulses injected by power electronic appliances on the network is a deviation
from the AWGN. The nature of the noise is categorized as non-white non-Gaussian and
unstable due to its impulsive attributes, thus, it is labeled as Non-additive White Gaussian
Noise (NAWGN). These noise and disturbances results into long burst errors that corrupts
signals being transmitted, thus, the PLC is labeled as a horrible or burst error channel.
The e cient and optimal performance of a conventional linear receiver in the white Gaussian
noise environment can therefore be made to drastically degrade in this NAWGN environment.
Therefore, transmission reliability in such environment can be greatly enhanced if we
know and exploit the knowledge of the channel's statistical attributes, thus, the need for
developing statistical channel model based on empirical data. In this thesis, attention is
focused on developing a recon gurable software de ned un-coded single-carrier and multicarrier
PLC transceiver as a tool for realizing an optimized channel model for the narrowband
PLC (NB-PLC) channel.
First, a novel recon gurable software de ned un-coded single-carrier and multi-carrier PLC
transceiver is developed for real-time NB-PLC transmission. The transceivers can be adapted
to implement di erent waveforms for several real-time scenarios and performance evaluation.
Due to the varying noise parameters obtained from country to country as a result of
the dependence of noise impairment on mains voltages, topology of power line, place and
time, the developed transceivers is capable of facilitating constant measurement campaigns
to capture these varying noise parameters before statistical and mathematically inclined
channel models are derived.
Furthermore, the single-carrier (Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), Di erential BPSK
(DBPSK), Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and Di erential QPSK (DQPSK)) PLC
transceiver system developed is used to facilitate a First-Order semi-hidden Fritchman
Markov modeling (SHFMM) of the NB-PLC channel utilizing the e cient iterative Baum-
Welch algorithm (BWA) for parameter estimation. The performance of each modulation
scheme is evaluated in a mildly and heavily disturbed scenarios for both residential and
laboratory site considered. The First-Order estimated error statistics of the realized First-
Order SHFMM have been analytically validated in terms of performance metrics such as:
log-likelihood ratio (LLR), error-free run distribution (EFRD), error probabilities, mean
square error (MSE) and Chi-square ( 2) test. The reliability of the model results is also
con rmed by an excellent match between the empirically obtained error sequence and the
SHFMM regenerated error sequence as shown by the error-free run distribution plot.
This thesis also reports a novel development of a low cost, low complexity Frequency-shift
keying (FSK) - On-o keying (OOK) in-house hybrid PLC and VLC system. The functionality
of this hybrid PLC-VLC transceiver system was ascertained at both residential and
laboratory site at three di erent times of the day: morning, afternoon and evening. A First
and Second-Order SHFMM of the hybrid system is realized. The error statistics of the realized
First and Second-Order SHFMMs have been analytically validated in terms of LLR,
EFRD, error probabilities, MSE and Chi-square ( 2). The Second-Order SHFMMs have
also been analytically validated to be superior to the First-Order SHFMMs although at the
expense of added computational complexity. The reliability of both First and Second-Order
SHFMM results is con rmed by an excellent match between the empirical error sequences
and SHFMM re-generated error sequences as shown by the EFRD plot.
In addition, the multi-carrier (QPSK-OFDM, Di erential QPSK (DQPSK)-OFDM) and
Di erential 8-PSK (D8PSK)-OFDM) PLC transceiver system developed is used to facilitate
a First and Second-Order modeling of the NB-PLC system using the SHFMM and BWA
for parameter estimation. The performance of each OFDM modulation scheme in evaluated
and compared taking into consideration the mildly and heavily disturbed noise scenarios
for the two measurement sites considered. The estimated error statistics of the realized
SHFMMs have been analytically validated in terms of LLR, EFRD, error probabilities, MSE
and Chi-square ( 2) test. The estimated Second-Order SHFMMs have been analytically
validated to be outperform the First-Order SHFMMs although with added computational
complexity. The reliability of the models is con rmed by an excellent match between the
empirical data and SHFMM generated data as shown by the EFRD plot.
The statistical models obtained using Baum-Welch to adjust the parameters of the adopted
SHFMM are often locally maximized. To solve this problem, a novel Metropolis-Hastings
algorithm, a Bayesian inference approach based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)
is developed to optimize the parameters of the adopted SHFMM. The algorithm is used to
optimize the model results obtained from the single-carrier and multi-carrier PLC systems
as well as that of the hybrid PLC-VLC system. Consequently, as deduced from the results,
the models obtained utilizing the novel Metropolis-Hastings algorithm are more precise, near
optimal model with parameter sets that are closer to the global maxima.
Generally, the model results obtained in this thesis are relevant in enhancing transmission
reliability on the PLC channel through the use of the models to improve the adopted modulation
schemes, create adaptive modulation techniques, develop and evaluate forward error
correction (FEC) codes such as a concatenation of Reed-Solomon and Permutation codes and
other robust codes suitable for exploiting and mitigating noise impairments encountered on
the low voltage NB-PLC channel. Furthermore, the recon gurable software de ned NB-PLC
transceiver test-bed developed can be utilized for future measurement campaign as well as
adapted for multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) PLC applications. / MT2018

Linhas de produção são sistemas fabris para produção em larga escala, com grande importância no sistema industrial atual. Como se trata de um sistema já consolidado, é natural que existam métricas de desempenho e estratégias para otimização de eficiência para as diversas configurações de linhas de produção existentes. Este trabalho se concentra em linhas seriais não-ritmadas e estocásticas. Em particular, o interesse é no efeito de se desbalancear adequadamente uma linha de produção para melhorar sua produtividade, o que é denominado na literatura de fenômeno Tigela (Bowl phenomenon). Uma revisão da literatura mostrou que esse fenômeno já foi estudado em diferentes cenários: linhas com e sem buffers, diversos perfis de carga ao longo da linha e diferentes distribuições probabilísticas regendo os tempos de execução das tarefas. Contudo, nenhum dos estudos considerou a indivisibilidade das tarefas, isto é, o fato de que cada tarefa deve ser executada em uma única estação. Essa é a principal lacuna explorada neste estudo. Para isso, são utilizadas instâncias recentemente propostas do Problema Simples de Balanceamento de Linhas de Produção (SALBP, na sigla em inglês) e instâncias do Problema de Designação de Trabalhadores e Balanceamento de Linhas de Produção (ALWABP), que são solucionadas a partir de modelos de programação inteira mista que induzem soluções de acordo com o efeito Tigela. Essas soluções são utilizadas em um modelo de simulação estocástico, também apresentado neste trabalho. Em linhas gerais, os resultados mostram que as soluções do SALBP e ALWABP obtidas podem se beneficiar do efeito Tigela. Além disso, a variedade das instâncias utilizadas nos experimentos argumentam em favor de uma maior capacidade de generalização dos resultados para casos práticos se comparados aos casos simplificados previamente discutidos na literatura. / Assembly lines are large-scale production systems with great value in modern industrial systems. Perfomance measures and strategies have been proposed in order to evaluate and improve the efficiency of numerous assembly line configurations. This dissertation focuses on serial unpaced (stochastic) assembly lines. In particular, the interest of this study is in the effect of deliberately unbalacing the line in a specific manner in order to enhance its performance, a strategy that exploits the so-called Bowl phenomenon. The literature has studied this phenomenon in different scenarios: buffered and unbuffered lines, different workload profiles along the line and different probabilistic task time distributions. However, none of the identified studies considers task indivisibility, an intrisic characteristic of real-world assembly line balancing problems, namely, each task has to be executed in a single station. This is the main gap explored in this study. Thereunto, we use recently proposed instances for the Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem (SALBP) and some Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Balancing Problem (ALWABP) instances, which are solved using mixed integer programming models capable of inducing bowl workload profiles. These solutions are used as input in a stochastic simulation model, also presented in this study. Overall, the results show that SALBP and ALWABP solutions may benefit from the Bowl phenomenon. Furthermore, the variety of the instances considered in the experiments allows for a better generalization of the results to real-world scenarios if compared to the simplified cases previously shown in the literature.

Wake-Induced Oscillations in Cable Structures: Finite Element ApproachSnegovskiy, Dmitri 11 June 2010 (has links)
In this work we consider the overhead power transmission lines (OHL). Their specifics are related to the presence of cables (conductors) whose length between supporting towers may extend to dozens of thousand meters. The OHL components are exposed to a combination of natural actions wind, rain, ice / snow / frost deposits. Compared to other structural parts, conductors have the highest flexibility and very low structural self-damping (of the order of 0.1 % of critical damping or lower, depending on frequencies). They are among structural elements the most sensitive to these actions.
Since early fifties the increased energy demand gave a rise to large construction of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage overhead lines equipped with bundled electrical conductors. For such arrangements there was noticed a kind of wind-induced oscillations originated by a zone of disturbed and retarded air flow (wake), that the cables located upwind(windward) cast onto the downwind (leeward) ones. The effect of this phenomenon called Wake-Induced Oscillations (WIO) resulted in fatigue damages of conductors, failures of insulator strings and cable suspension hardware and fatigue failures of spacers.
There have been identified analogues to transmission lines WIO in other regular structures subjectto the cross-flow of viscous fluids (air, gas, water etc.): heat exchanger tubes, clusters of fuel rods of nnuclear reactors, groups of chimneys, buildings. Early works in this field relate to the aerodynamics of tandem and staggered twin struts to support the wings of biplanes and published by Pannell, Griffits and Coales in 1915. Other cable structures like suspenders in suspension bridges or stays in cable-stayed bridges may be also subject to wake-induced oscillations. In each of these cases, conditions of oscillations occurrence and structural response depend on cables specific mass and stiffness, kind of fixation, dimension scale versus fluid viscosity and velocity (Reynolds number) etc. The cables separation plays important role, as there are different kinds of wake interference especially when the cables are closely spaced.
A number of research projects were entertained to study the wake-induced oscillations of different structures, which brought to development of analytical and experimental models and methods of protection against this phenomenon. A particular solution to overhead lines was found by unevenly distributing the spacers along the line span. To achieve that, no unique approach exists; virtually each grid company, or manufacturer of spacers proceeds with its own method. It may rely on different basis, either field experience or analytical study or a mixture of them. And, despite advances in numerical modelling of latest decades, few publications uncover phenomenological side of WIO.
The issues of modelling WIO in a view of helping to develop methods for protection of line against WIO are a main subject of this work.
Original advances studied in this thesis include:
- Current state-of-the art for analytical calculation of WIO, including the loads in the wake
- Overview of classic theory of wake-induced flutter and its evaluation from the standpoint of modern numerical tools for analytical applications (e.g., Matlab)
- Nonlinear Finite-Element Modelling of WIO using classic theory of wake-induced flutter,
study of its domains of application, advantages and limitations, including validation upon field experiments
- Foundation of basic methodology for optimal placement of spacers over the bundle conductor span

Long resistive cables used in the operation of remote instrumentation impose fundamental limits on the amount of power delivered and create difficulties in voltage regulation at the remote-end (voltage at the end of the cable) with changing load conditions. This type of power delivery is used in many engineering systems such as in the operation of underwater remotely-operated vehicles, in oil drilling and mining industries, and in highly distributed systems (aircraft, submarines, and space stations, etc.). The focus of this research is to develop new approaches for power delivery in systems that have considerable voltage drops between the local and remote-ends.Two novel methods of power delivery based on state feedback control and parallel operation of switching and linear regulators to enhance stability and increase the power delivered at the remote-end are developed and validated experimentally.A system-level approach is developed to control the remote-end voltage for changing load conditions through the usage of a model inversion technique at the local-end along with a feedback of the local-end variables.
