The translation of irony in Australian political commentary texts from English into Arabic

The main thesis of this study is that the translation of irony from English into Arabic in commentary texts in Australia is not amenable to traditional translation theories. The way Arabic and English speakers employ irony to express themselves reflects the linguistic and cultural distance between both languages. To tackle this problem, the study ventures into a contrastive analysis with reference to a number of linguistic and non-linguistic devices and concepts. It concentrates on the interpretation and the linguistic realisation of irony in both languages by utilising a number of contemporary linguistic models. The research takes the view that ironic devices are the foundation of the structural development of the texts in question. To demonstrate this, the speech act and conversational theories are used. The interaction between the ironic devices and the text development constitute a framework for the overall rhetorical meaning of the text. After an overview of the relevant literature of translation, contrastive analysis and comparative stylistics, an analysis/translation model is devised and implemented. A thorough contrastive analysis is made of English and Arabic commentary texts. Similarities and differences between the Arabic and English texts are found. Discrepancies were observed in the form, function and the number of ironic devices used in both languages. Based on the findings seven general strategies are proposed for the translation of irony in Australian commentary texts from English into Arabic. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

<p>Den här studien handlar om vilken påverkan omställningen från versaler till gemener har på den tidiga inlärningen av bokstäver i skrift och läsning. Studien handlar även om det pedagogiska material som affärer som tillexempel lågprisvaruhus och bokhandeln säljer och vilken effekt ett material som lekmän utformat har på ett barns inlärning av skrift och läsning. Studien berättar även om vilket pedagogiskt material som förskolan och skolan använder sig av och det materialets påverkan på inlärningen av bokstäver. Den metod som använts är att jag lett gruppdiskussioner där vi arbetat med semistrukturerade frågor för att på det sättet komma djupare in i ämnet. Frågeställningen har varit hur dagens aktiva pedagoger resonerar om versaler (stora bokstäver) och gemener (små bokstäver), dessutom behandlas hur pedagogerna resonerar om elever som blandar versaler och gemener i en mening eller ett ord. Studien visar att användningen av gemener och versaler inte är tillräckligt reflekterad, och därför bara fortsätter av ohejdad vana.</p>

A hybrid approach to automatic text summarization

Automatic text summarization can efficiently and effectively save users¡¦ time while reading text documents. The objective of automatic text summarization is to extract essential sentences that cover almost all the concepts of a document so that users are able to comprehend the ideas the document tries to address by simply reading through the corresponding summary. This research focuses on developing a hybrid automatic text summarization approach, KCS, to enhancing the quality of summaries. This approach basically consists of two major components: first, it employs the K-mixture probabilistic model to calculate term weights in a statistical sense; it then identifies the term relationship between nouns and nouns as well as nouns and verbs, which results in the connective strength (CS) of nouns. With the connective strengths available scores of sentences can be calculated and ranked to be extracted. We conduct three experiments to justify the proposed approach. The quality of summary is examined by its capability of increasing accuracy of text classification,while the classifier employed, the Naïve Bayes classifier, is kept the same through all experiments. The results show that the K-mixture model is more contributive to document classification than traditional TFIDF weighting scheme. It, however, is still no better than CS, a more complex linguistic-based approach. More importantly, our proposed approach, KCS, performs best among all approaches considered. It implies that KCS can extract more representative sentences from the document and its feasibility in text summarization applications is thus justified.
