Improved O(N) neighbor list method using domain decomposition and data sorting

The conventional Verlet table neighbor list algorithm is improved to reduce the number of unnecessary inter-atomic distance calculations in molecular simulations involving large amount of atoms. Both of the serial and parallelized performance of molecular dynamics simulation are evaluated using the new algorithm and compared with those using the conventional Verlet table and cell-linked list algorithm. Results show that the new algorithm significantly improved the performance of molecular dynamics simulation compared with conventional neighbor list maintaining and utilizing algorithms in serial programs as well as parallelized programs. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Conservation assessment of South African mammals

Clearly established conservation priorities are urgently required for taxa and ecosystems in critical need of conservation. This helps to identify and document taxa most in need of conservation attention, and provides an index of the state of degeneration of biodiversity. Including as much relevant information as possible in a prioritisation assessment will deliver the most accurate classification, yet these variables should not overly complicate the prioritisation process. Conservation assessments depend not just on the taxon’s susceptibility to threat (i.e. risk of extinction, or Red List assessments), but also the conservation value, irreplaceability and nature and intensity of the threats. Research into the value and applicability of conservation prioritisation tools at a regional scale, allowed for the assessment of the extinction risk as well as subsequent priority ranking of South African mammals. At the outset research was directed towards investigating South African mammals in accordance with their respective regional and global World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List and Red Data Book assessments. The regional Red List assessment drastically improved local knowledge of the current extinction risk of various mammals, and identified 57 marine and terrestrial mammals to be highly threatened. Up to date regional extinction risk assessments, allowed for the investigation of whether a human activity threat index derived from six human activity variables across South Africa could be used to highlight mammals threatened with extinction while also being exposed to high human activity. Evidence indicated various threatened and lower risk mammals were exposed to high human activity throughout their range, pointing to high potential threat and future increase in extinction risk. For relevant prioritisation to take place, components of vulnerability (IUCN Red List assessments, and occupancy data), irreplaceability (endemism and taxonomic distinctiveness), and threat measures (body mass and human density in a taxa distributional range) was introduced into relational priority assessment which allowed for a simplified approach in determining conservation priorities for taxa under various region-specific conditions. The use of different sets of information clearly affected the priority rankings. South African Chiroptera and Carnivora was used as a case study to addresses whether a simple measure of taxonomic diversity can be used as a proxy for different measures of phylogenetic diversity in determining regional conservation priority of taxa, when such information is limited. Evidence does suggest that the utilisation of the simple taxonomic diversity measure may provide the appropriate information on evolutionary diversity. Two theoretical concepts were proposed to address some potential shortcomings in the conservation prioritisation arena. The Orange List method offers a system to identify “species [or taxa] of high national importance or of high conservation value” (South African National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act 2004). In turn the Green Data List essentially represents a radical shift in the traditional approach to the management of both threatened and invasive taxa. Throughout this thesis, evidence do point to smaller mammals being of high conservation concern in South Africa, with the members from the Orders Rodentia, Chiroptera and Insectivora being constantly identified as high conservation priority. Practical Decom List Switching

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1988 / Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada / With more complex vehicle designs, the frequency and number of measurements contained in telemetry data streams has dramatically increased. One way of improving the use of bandwidth is to change the sample rate, quantity, or type of measurements dynamically. A telemetry front end must be programmable to handle different formats. In a front end that decommutates and routes measurements, a decom list is a control program, which defines the location, size, orientation, and identity of the measurements. To deal with dynamic format changes, a telemetry front end must be able to switch between decom lists. A practical approach to decom list switching must address the needs of error avoidance, packet switching, and the location of switching keys in any portion of the format. Switching between formats should not be restricted to a preprogrammed sequence, but should allow multiple destinations from a particular decom list. A practical and flexible implementation of decom list switching is detailed along with an explanation of how this implementation solves a variety of decommutation problems.

Higher Compression from the Burrows-Wheeler Transform with New Algorithms for the List Update Problem

Burrows-Wheeler compression is a three stage process in which the data is transformed with the Burrows-Wheeler Transform, then transformed with Move-To-Front, and finally encoded with an entropy coder. Move-To-Front, Transpose, and Frequency Count are some of the many algorithms used on the List Update problem. In 1985, Competitive Analysis first showed the superiority of Move-To-Front over Transpose and Frequency Count for the List Update problem with arbitrary data. Earlier studies due to Bitner assumed independent identically distributed data, and showed that while Move-To-Front adapts to a distribution faster, incurring less overwork, the asymptotic costs of Frequency Count and Transpose are less. The improvements to Burrows-Wheeler compression this work covers are increases in the amount, not speed, of compression. Best x of 2x-1 is a new family of algorithms created to improve on Move-To-Front's processing of the output of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform which is like piecewise independent identically distributed data. Other algorithms for both the middle stage of Burrows-Wheeler compression and the List Update problem for which overwork, asymptotic cost, and competitive ratios are also analyzed are several variations of Move One From Front and part of the randomized algorithm Timestamp. The Best x of 2x - 1 family includes Move-To-Front, the part of Timestamp of interest, and Frequency Count. Lastly, a greedy choosing scheme, Snake, switches back and forth as the amount of compression that two List Update algorithms achieves fluctuates, to increase overall compression. The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is based on sorting of contexts. The other improvements are better sorting orders, such as “aeioubcdf...” instead of standard alphabetical “abcdefghi...” on English text data, and an algorithm for computing orders for any data, and Gray code sorting instead of standard sorting. Both techniques lessen the overwork incurred by whatever List Update algorithms are used by reducing the difference between adjacent sorted contexts.

The aim of the thesis was to map the change and the development of pharmaceutical interest rates in the years 1918−1945 and selected issues connected to it. The work is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter there is a characteristic of the period mentioned above. The second chapter deals with pharmacy situation in 1918−1945. The third chapter is devoted to the independent development of pharmaceutical interest rates, followed by the fourth chapter, where the individual processing rates are described in the charts. The result is a view of the diverse growth of prices of individual drugs that are listed in this thesis. I noticed the highest price increase after the end of the First World War. The second significant change in the price of drugs was at the beginning of the Second World War. It was the period of an increase and fixing of the prices. In conclusion, I evaluate the trend of prices of drugs and the influence of the end of the First World War and the impact of the Second World War on the pharmaceutical rates. The thesis focuses on segmentation of images with leaves of woody species. The main aim was to investigate existing image segmentation methods, choose suitable method for given data and implement it. Inputs are scanned leaves and photographs of various quality. The thesis summarizes the general methods of image segmentation and describes algorithm that gives us the best results. Based on the histogram, the algorithm decides whether the input is of sufficient quality and can be segmented by Otsu algorithm or is not and should be segmented using GrowCut algorithm. Next, the image is improved by morphological closing and holes filling. Finally, only the largest object is left. Results are illustrated using generated output images. Žalmy v epištole Korintským / Psalms in the Epistle to the Corinthians

The focus of this work is on parallels between Old Testament and New Testament. We chose specific texts that will help us to show how these two parts of the Bible are connected. We want to examine Paul's use of Psalms in his First letter to Corinth and decide whether his quotations have similar theological context and motifs. We would like to present three main topics that are connecting Paul's use of the Psalms: human wisdom, God's sovereignty and Christ's sovereignty. The first one covers Psalm 94:11 in 1 Cor 3:20, the second one covers Psalms 24, 89 and 50 in 1 Cor 10:26 and the third covers Psalms 8 and 110 in 1 Cor 15:25,27. In addition to quotations we work with allusions which are included in mentioned chapters as well as one other chapter dealing with topic of Exodus in various psalms and Ps 31:25. Our goal is to prove that Paul had theological reasons to use Psalms in his First epistle to Corinth; therefore we conduct an exegesis of the passages above.

A functional terminological analysis of a “Multilingual parliamentary/ Political terminology list” of the Department of Arts and Culture

Magister Artium - MA / South Africa’s National Language Policy Framework was formulated in 2003. The framework was designed to create an enabling environment for the development of instruments and initiatives intended to promote multilingualism in the country. Following the formulation of the National Language Policy Framework, National Parliament, in collaboration with the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape Legislatures, commissioned a project of developing a Terminology List of terminology that is used in these settings. This Terminology List was taken over and expanded in 2005. According to the Terminology List’s preface, “stakeholders embarked on the enlarged terminology project in order to ensure that multilingualism was possible in this field. The Multilingual Parliamentary/Political Terminology List will promote multilingualism in Parliament and elsewhere, and will facilitate effective communication between parliamentarians, politicians, national and provincial language offices, provincial legislatures and Hansard offices” (DAC (2005: iii-iv). With perhaps one exception (Rondganger, 2012) focusing on the English-Afrikaans language pair, there are no known studies evaluating the Multilingual Parliamentary/Political Terminology List. As a result, it is not known to what extent envisaged target users (e.g. language practitioners) in National and Provincial Legislatures are even aware of its existence. It is also not known to what extent the terminology resource is able to support target users in the typical usage situations envisaged in the preface. More generally, there has also been no determination of how the Multilingual Parliamentary/Political Terminology List has contributed to language development, specifically, making possible the use of the nine indigenous African languages for parliamentary-related discourse. As a consequence of the above dearth of knowledge around the Multilingual Parliamentary/Political Terminology List, there also is no empirical database upon which suggestions can be made for improving it; that is, responding to the call in the preface for suggestions: “the compilers acknowledge that it might be useful to expand the collection, and any suggestions in this regard will be welcomed” (DAC (2005: iv). This research draws on the sociology of dictionary use (Kühn 1989, Flinz 2010) and on a knowledge-attitude-practice (KAP) approach to terminology evaluation (Antia 2000, Antia & Clas 2003; Rubin 1977, Kummer 1983) to analyse the Multilingual Parliamentary Terminology List.

Bakgrund: För många svårt sjuka patienter med organsvikt är organtransplantation deras enda chans till ett bättre och längre liv. Till följd av stora förändringar och framsteg har transplantationen utvecklats, men bristen på organ är global och beror på allmänhetens inställning. Förlorad kontroll är den mest centrala upplevelsen och upplevelsen av oförutsägbarhet och osäkerhet under väntetiden. Lagar och författningar som styr organdonation och organtransplantation ser olika ut i världen. Sverige har en samtyckeslag som betyder att personen är positivt inställd till donation, men närstående har vetorätt och kan motsätta sig ingreppet. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva patienters upplevelse av att vänta på organtransplantation. Metod: En litteraturstudie med induktiv ansats som omfattas av tolv artiklar varav en kvantitativ. Databaserna Cinahl Complete och PubMed användes. Genom hela gransknings- och analysprocessen användes Polit och Becks niostegsmodell. Resultat: Fyra kategorier framkom: ”fysiska symtom”, ”den psykiska upplevelsen av att vänta”, ”copingstrategier” och ”sociala begränsningar”. Diskussion: Två huvudfynd framkom; det första beskriver fysiska symtom som genererar sociala begräsningar och det andra beskriver hur patienterna utvecklar copingstrategier, för att hantera den psykiska upplevelsen av att vänta. Dessa diskuteras med stöd från annan forskning och Antonovskys förhållningssätt KASAM.
