An evaluation of the logotherapeutic techniques of Viktor Frankl

Ras, Johan M. January 2000 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2000. / This study is an evaluation of the different logotherapeutic techniques of Viktor Frankl. An evaluation has been given of every technique and some of the major tests that are used by logotherapists. These techniques have been evaluated mainly from a personality, and at times, from an abnormal psychological point of view. The pre¬sent uses of logotherapy as well as its possible future also have been discussed.

The applicability of logotherapy as an organisation development intervention

Burger, Daniel Hendrik 19 May 2009 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. / The study investigated the relationship between resistance to–readiness for change and meaning seeking, and whether a logotherapy-based intervention – Logo-OD – would impact on resistance to change. A quasi-experimental design and various statistical procedures were applied to test identified hypotheses. Of a survey population of 1 637 individuals, 193 and 76 respondents formed part of respectively the pre- and post-test samples. Whereas a significant relationship was established between said constructs, no significant effect of Logo-OD was observed. These results supported the primary conclusions emanating from the literature: the role of Logo-OD is one of a positive trigger event for organisational change. Whereas a prominent focus in both classic and contemporary literature is on the utilisation of the organisation’s human resources (HR) as a competitive advantage (see Barney, 1995; Cascio, 1998; Cook & Crossman, 2004; Drucker, 2002; Gratton, 2000; McGregor, 1960; O’Reilly & Pfeffer, 2000; Prahalad & Hamel, 1990; Richardson & Vanderberg, 2005; Schuler & Jackson, 1999; Schuler, Jackson & Storey, 2001), the need for organisations to adapt to increasingly turbulent changes has enjoyed similar attention (see Burnes, 2003, 2004; Cascio, 1995; Carnall, 2003; Chapman, 2002; Counsell, Tennant & Neailey, 2005; Hacker & Washington, 2004; Higgs, 2003; Johnson, 2004; Weber & Weber, 2001; Xavier, 2005). Alluded to here, is one of the greatest challenges faced by the modern organisation, namely that “human capital is fundamentally different from financial and technological capital” (Gratton, 1998, p. 13) as the realisation of human potential is dependent upon employees’ co-operation (Jackson & Schuler, 1999). However, organisational change “has left this resource severely wounded and the people themselves increasingly disenfranchised” (Morin, 1994, p. 53), thus threatening the very same employee commitment required to secure a competitive advantage. Subsequently, people constitute both “an essential factor” and “the biggest obstacles” to successful change (Smith, 2005a, p. 408, 2005b, p. 152). It is argued here that a central construct in determining individuals’ attitudes towards organisational change – albeit resistance to or readiness for change – is the meaning that they find in the organisational context.

A Paradoxical Treatment Technique Versus a Behavioral Approach in Treatment of Procrastination of Studying

Young, James Robert 12 1900 (has links)
The present study investigated the relative efficacy of paradoxical, behavioral, and reflection-support treatments among college students who complained about procrastination of studying. Although there is much literature describing successful use of paradoxical treatment, there has been little substantive research. Paradoxical techniques offer more complex theoretical explanations than behavioral therapy even though in practice the procedure of each are often quite similar. Subjects were selected by their response to an ad in the school newspaper that offered free treatment for students who had problems with procrastination. Further screening of participants was done through clinical interviews. Thirty-three subjects were selected for treatment of procrastination with three clients randomly assigned to each of 11 advanced psychology graduate students who served as therapists. Each therapist provided all three types of treatment, one type of treatment to each of their three assigned clients.

Logotherapy and imagery work: the contribution of Boeschemeyer’s ‘Wertimagination’

Meyer-Prentice, Monika 14 September 2011 (has links)
In this qualitative, interpretive study a new and promising imagery technique, called Wertimagination (WIM®) [Value-Oriented Imagery] was researched. It was developed by the logotherapist Uwe Boeschemeyer in Germany. At the main focus of this study are the psychotherapeutic work experiences of logotherapists applying WIM®. Their perceptions with regard to Wertimagination’s potencies, limitations and its overall contribution to Logotherapy are explored. Eight semi-structured expert interviews were conducted with German logotherapists offering WIM® at their practice. The interview contents are analysed and compared with supplementing perspectives: with Wertimagination experiences reported by other (logo)therapists, by clients and by the developer of the method (Boeschemeyer), extracted from the existing body of literature. The results show that Value-Oriented Imagery by all three researched parties – (logo)therapists, clients and its developer – is experienced to be a high potential logotherapeutic, salutogenetic (resources-oriented) approach contributing inter alia towards a person’s inner meaning finding, selfacceptance and trust in life. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Stramrood, Ilka 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to measure the influence of a logotherapy activity, the mountain range exercise on the purpose in life and values of Grade 11 scholars of a specific culture community in the Western Cape. Two research hypotheses were formulated; firstly, that the logotherapy activity will help to heighten the meaning in the lives of Grade 11 scholars and, secondly, that the logotherapy activity would influence the values of Grade 11 scholars. The fifty-nine subjects used in the study were Grade 11 scholars at Macassar High School in the Western Cape. The subjects were divided into an experimental and control group. Two questionnaires were used in the study: the Purpose in Life-test (PIL) and the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values (AVL). After the experimental group completed the logotherapy activity they were divided into four discussion groups, each group consisting of seven or eight subjects. The groups underwent two discussion sessions. The experimental group completed the logotherapy activity and a post-test was carried out on both groups. Results showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of the experimental group on the Purpose in Life-test. The first research hypotheses is hereby supported; that is the implementation of the logotherapy activity heighten the meaning in the lives of the experimental group. The pre-test and post-test results of the experimental group differed significantly with regard to the economic value. The second research hypotheses is hereby supported, that is, the implementation of the logotherapy activity will influence the values of Grade 11 scholars.

Nunes, Diego Brandão January 2018 (has links)
The present work has as theme the importance of the presence of meaning in Geography‟s classes. Our analytical delimitation is based on the relationship of meaning as a facilitator or not of the teaching-learning process in Geography. The investigative path applies the Complexity‟s Paradigm as a challenge for understanding of the world based on Qualitative Research Techniques. The lenses of this research are projected from the study of Geographic Space, Landscape and of Place. The research has as initial concern the study of methodological ways that enable the sense‟s perception in the classes, through the creation, experience and attitude of the students, in order that we have epistemological clarity to seek approximations with demands of the Geography teaching‟s area. From this, we problematize the challenges that find in the classrooms, the proximities that this science can possess with the study of meaning and we investigate the possibilities that favor a large attribution of the same on the part of the students. We have like contributions of the psychoanalytic line named Logotherapy, it was developed by the Viennese psychotherapist Viktor E. Frankl (2008), his work aims at overcoming the difficulties from the encounter with the sense that the subjects attribute to their lives. After these theoretical approaches, we show pedagogical activities, based on the contributions of Logotherapy, in Geography‟s Teaching and the Piaget Genetics‟ Epistemology by Piaget (1974), which we consider as showing elements that favor the attribution of meaning by subjects involved in their classes and allow knowledge‟s construction. The work indicates the necessity to rethink our practices, so our classes can come to the meeting of life of those who study Geography, and these students develop analysis‟ ability, reflection and knowledge‟s application studied to life.
