The Relation between Laser Noise and Laser Longitudinal Modes in the Optical Disk System

Chiu, Pei-Yu 22 July 2000 (has links)
In optical disk systems, a semiconductor laser is used to read out the data recorded on the disc. Since the laser is the first noise source, there are strictly rated values for laser's noise in various optical disk systems to ensure the normal operation of the system. Among different laser noises, the worst one is the optical feedback noise. The feedback light will disturb the longitudinal modes of the laser and induce huge fluctuation in Laser's output. In our work, we study the effect of optical feedback on Laser's modes and relative intensity noises under various driving current and chop temperature. We try to find out methods that can suppress the Laser's noise and try to give some suggestions for the design of disc driven. Some experiments about a commercialized optical disk driver are also reported as well.

Detection of defects in timber using dynamic excitation and vibration analysis

Moshiri, Farzad, Mobasher, Bahareh, Talib Issa, Osama January 2009 (has links)
This thesis evaluates the possibility to detect natural defects, such as knots, in timber boards using dynamic excitation test and ABAQUS software. In the study the edgewise bending direction were compared with axial direction. Dynamic excitation and modal analysis were used to extract the natural frequencies of several sound and artificially defected boards with the help of Signalcalc. Mobylizer software. By using the first edgewise natural frequency, modulus of elasticity (MOE) was calculated. An ABAQUS 2D Finite Element model was utilized to model the board and to extract the frequencies for the six first mode shapes in both axial and edgewise directions. The extracted frequencies from the model were compared with the frequencies from the tests. The analytical and experimental results, from the homogeneous boards, in edgewise direction has similar frequency variations. The defects in the timber boards decreased the natural frequencies. The bending modes with more curvature at the location of the artificial defect displayed more frequency deviation in that mode. The variation in response frequencies for uniform and defected boards was more noticeable in edgewise bending modes than in longitudinal modes.

Dual-mode ZnO thin films for piezoelectric transducers

Mao, Chun-Kai 09 August 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to study the c-axis inclined ZnO films to produce dual-mode thin-film piezoelectric transducer. The cantilever beam vibration theory as a power generation mode in adopted to verify that the transducer is in suitable for the application in the environment for low-frequency vibration. In order to develop dual-mode thin-film piezoelectric transducer, this study uses radio-frequency magnetron sputtering method with off-axis growth to deposit ZnO films on Pt/Ti/stainless steel substrate(SUS304), the effects of deposition parameters on the characteristict of ZnO films are studied. Because zinc oxide thin-film is grown with c-axis tilt, so the piezoelectric transducer exhibits longitudinal-mode and shear-mode characteristics. The physical characteristics of ZnO thin films were obtained by the analyses of the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to discuss the surfaces, cross section and crystallization of ZnO thin films. Finally, the vibration test equipment in used for the measurement of electrical properties. The open and loaded voltages of the transducers were obtained by the measurement system. The optimal deposition parameters for ZnO thin films are sputtering pressure of 5 mTorr, RF power of 150W, substrate temperature of room temperature and oxygen concentration of 50%, which were determined by physical characteristics and voltage analysis. Under the optimal parameters, the ZnO thin-films are deposited with maximum shear-mode and tilting angles of 35¢X.The transducer was one-sid loaded with a piece of metal of 0.5 g load to enhance the cantilever vibration amplitude. As the input vibration of 65 Hz and vibration amplitude of 1mm were set, the maximum output power was obtained. The maximum open circuit voltage of 19.4 V was obtained. When the output of the transducers was recetified and filtered through a 1NN5711 Schottky diode bridge rectifier and a 33nF capacitor, the maximum power of 2.05£gW/cm2 was achieved with the load resistance of 5M£[.

Effects of Orthogonal Polarization Optical Feedback on Semiconductor Lasers

Cheng, Da-Long 02 January 2004 (has links)
This research investigated the characteristics of single-mode optical pulses generated with orthogonal-polarization optical feedback (OPF) in Fabry-Perot type semiconductor lasers. Single-mode pulse trains with a pulse frequency of 470 MHz and 3.76 GHz were observed. A modified model was proposed to solve the inconsistency between the experimental results and the computer simulations of Otsuka and Chern¡¦s model. These results also solve the problem of a round-trip feedback distance that is too short to enable the feedback system to be implemented, making this technology accomplishable in currently working systems. Furthermore, this investigation recovered and maintained a stable oscillation of every missing longitudinal mode in a hysteresis type mode-hopping gap of a semiconductor laser. A special feature of this method is that both the laser power and spectral purity are preserved during mode recovery and mode switching. The experimental results also reveal that the OPF effectively suppressed mode-hopping in semiconductor lasers and drove the laser into a stable single-mode state. Finally, this research employed OPF to suppress the intensity noise stimulated by coherent optical feedback in a semiconductor laser. At a coherent-feedback level as strong as ¡V14 dB, an OPF ratio of ¡V29 dB could return the laser to its primitive single mode from the multimode, yielding a spectral purity and relative intensity noise (RIN) even better than the solitary values. These discoveries constitute an important contribution to our understanding of applications of semiconductor lasers.

The Study and Implementation of Compact Ring Laser for the Generation of Single Frequency IR and Green Lasers

Weng, Chun-Jen 27 June 2001 (has links)
Abstract Single frequency laser has the advantages of high stability in frequency and low noise. Therefore, single frequency laser is now widely used in applications, such as high precision measurement, holography and data storage. Attempts to generate second harmonic radiation using a linear cavity have typically resulted in significant amplitude fluctuations due to longitudinal mode coupling. Various techniques have been proposed for solving the so called ¡§green problem¡¨ to achieve single longitudinal mode operation, such as inserting optical component in the conventional linear cavity or use ring cavity instead of linear cavity. Uni-directional ring cavity has shown to be the most robust method for producing single frequency laser. The purpose of this study is to develop compact and low-cost single frequency IR and green lasers. A novel symmetrical two-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity is developed. Instead of using several laser mirrors for beam deflection, this ring laser system employs only two spherical mirrors to form the laser cavity for traveling wave oscillation and eliminates ¡§spatial hole burning¡¨ caused by the standing wave operation. In this thesis, we use two-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity for the generation of single frequency IR and green lasers. The polarization status is crucial for high efficient intracavity frequency doubling. The polarization evaluation in a nonplanar and reentrant ring cavity is characterized by measuring the thermally induced linear and circular birefringence and analyzing the polarization rotation due to cavity configuration. We have demonstrated a 2-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity which is compact and has few optical elements. The stable single frequency laser output of our ring cavity promises to make the design widely applicable to solid-state lasers.

Spectral control of lasers and optical parametric oscillators with volume Bragg gratings

Jacobsson, Björn January 2008 (has links)
The object of this thesis is to explore the usage of reflective volume Bragg gratings in photo-thermo-refractive glass for spectral control of solid-state lasers and optical parametric oscillators, to build tunable and narrowband coherent light-sources. In order to provide a design tool for use of reflective volume Bragg gratings in laser cavities, a theory was developed that describes the performance of the gratings if the incident beam has finite width with an angular spectrum that is comparable to the grating's angular acceptance bandwidth. Spectral control was demonstrated in a number of cw solid-state lasers, in terms of narrow bandwidth and tunable wavelength, by use of a volume Bragg grating. The design could be made very simple by replacing one of the cavity mirrors with the grating. Thanks to the grating's strong spectral selectivity, the lasers could be locked anywhere in the gain spectrum, while the laser bandwidth was substantially narrowed. In particular, the following lasers were demonstrated: Single-longitudinal-mode lasing in ErYb:glass at 1553 nm with 90 kHz linewidth and in Nd:GdVO4 at 1066 nm with a linewidth below 40 MHz. Very low quantum defect in Yb:KYW lasers, diode-pumped at 982 nm and lasing at 998 nm with 10 GHz bandwidth, as well as Ti:sapphire-pumped at 980 nm and lasing at 990 nm. An Yb:KYW laser that was widely tunable from 996 nm to 1048 nm with 10 GHz bandwidth. In nanosecond pulsed optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) based on periodically poled KTiOPO4, narrowband operation and a tunable wavelength were demonstrated with a volume Bragg grating as a cavity mirror. At a signal wavelength of 975 nm, the bandwidth was 50 GHz, a reduction by 20 times compared to using a conventional mirror. A tuning range of 21 THz was also demonstrated. In another OPO at a signal wavelength of 760 nm, a ring-cavity design was demonstrated to provide convenient tuning. A tuning range of 2.6 THz and a bandwidth of 130 GHz was shown. Also, narrowband operation and tuning in an OPO around 1 µm was demonstrated by use of a transversely chirped Bragg grating. / QC 20100813

Compact solid-state lasers in the near-infrard and visible spectral range

Seger, Kai January 2013 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the exploration of new concepts for compact solid-state lasers in the visible and near-infrared spectral range using new components such as volume Bragg gratings for wavelength stabilisation and wavelength tuning. Also single-walled carbon nanotubes for mode-locking and Q-switching of lasers have been studied. We have developed a new method for the tuning of solid-state lasers by replacing a dielectric mirror with a transversally chirped volume Bragg grating, which allows smooth wavelength tuning without additional elements inside the laser cavity. The result is a more compact laser, since the tuning mechanism and output coupler are incorporated in one component. Another benefit is an increased efficiency, since additional elements inside the cavity will always add to the total loss of the laser. This has been demonstrated for a broadband ytterbium laser around 1 µm and a single-longitudinal-mode Nd:YVO4 laser around 1.06 µm. A volume Bragg grating has also been used to construct an efficient, narrow-linewidth ytterbium fiber laser and the employment of a volume Bragg gratingas the pump mirror of a solid-state laser for frequency-doubling has been investigated. Both lasers represent a practical solution, eliminating the use of additional intracavity elements. Second-harmonic generation is an efficient way to access the visible spectral range using diode-pumped solid-state lasers. However, these lasers can suffer from large amplitude fluctuations, which has been analyzed in more detail for an optically-pumped semiconductor disk-laser and a volume Bragg grating locked ytterbiumlaser. The control of those amplitude fluctuations is very important, since many applications like fluorescence microscopy require a laser with a constant output power and as little noise as possible. In addition to this, we have demonstrated, that saturable absorbers based on quan-tum dots and carbon nanotubes can be used to mode-lock compact laser at a wavelength around 1.03 µm. Those lasers have many interesting applications incommunications, clock generation, metrology and life sciences. / <p>QC 20130507</p>

Lakhmi, Riadh 18 November 2011 (has links)
The project concerns the conception, fabrication and characterization of cantilever-type MEMS structures for sensors applications. An alternative process to silicon related ones, associating the screen-printing technique to a sacrificial layer (SrCO3), was used to realize piezoelectric cantilevers (PZT material utilized as actuator and transducer) in a first time. Detections in gas phase were performed successfully with and without sensitive layer thanks to the unusual 31-longitudinal vibration mode. Namely, we were able to detect toluene at concentrations as low as 20ppm with a PEUT sensitive layer. Other species like water, ethanol or hydrogen could be detected without sensitive layer in order to get rid of the sensitive layer-related issues (ageing for example). Preliminary characterizations were carried out in liquid phase in a view to perform liquid phase detection. Besides, a cantilever-based force sensor, fabricated thanks to the same fabrication process was designed. This last one integrates a piezoresistor allowing the transduction of the mechanical signal linked to the strain overcome by the microcantilever. Force detections in static mode (without any actuator) permitted the sensors’ characterization. Indeed, their sensitivity, force range, minimal detectable force and linearity were carried out.
