High performance live migration over low-bandwidth, high-delay network with loss prevention

Pang, Zhu 11 1900 (has links)
Virtualization technology has attracted considerable interest. It allows several virtual machines to run concurrently inside a physical host, which brings multiple advantages. One of the most useful features is called live migration, during which a virtual machine can be migrated over network with minimal disruption. So far, most existing migration algorithms are focused on transferring the runtime state over high-speed, low-delay network. They all require shared storage for file systems. However, this sharing sometimes becomes impossible because of performance loss. Thus, the whole system needs to be transferred during migration. In this thesis, we introduce a Virtual Machine Management System which contains a block-level solution. Combined with pre-copying the runtime state, we can migrate an entire virtual machine over low-bandwidth, high-delay network with minimum service downtime. We show that this is sufficient even for interactive workloads. We also provide snapshots and full backup for the virtual machine.

A framework for data loss prevention using document semantic signature

Alhindi, Hanan 22 November 2019 (has links)
The theft and exfiltration of sensitive data (e.g., state secrets, trade secrets, company records, etc.) represent one of the most damaging threats that can be carried out by malicious insiders against institutions and organizations because this could seriously diminish the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the organization’s data. Data protection and insider threat detection and prevention are significant steps for any organization to enhance its internal security. In the last decade, data loss prevention (DLP) has emerged as one of the key mechanisms currently used by organizations to detect and block unauthorized data transfer from the organization perimeter. However, existing DLP approaches face several practical challenges, such as their relatively low accuracy that in turn affects their prevention capability. Also, current DLP approaches are ineffective in handling unstructured data or searching and comparing content semantically when confronted with evasion tactics where sensitive content is rewritten without changing its semantic. In the current dissertation, we present a new DLP model that tracks sensitive data using a summarized version of the content semantic called document semantic signature (DSS). The DSS can be updated dynamically as the protected content change and it is resilient against evasion tactics, such as content rewriting. We use domain specific ontologies to capture content semantics and track conceptual similarity and relevancy using adequate metrics to identify data leak from sensitive documents. The evaluation of the DSS model on two public datasets of different domain of interests achieved very encouraging results in terms of detection effectiveness. / Graduate

Metz, Susana January 2003 (has links)
This work has the general objective of verifying how a company manages its labor risks in order to prevent them. It is a one case study, with descriptive and qualitative nature. It was developed at "Grupo Eberle Mundial", through interview of the Manager of Human Resources, auto-applied questionnaire by seven members of the executive board of the company, document examination and analysis of articles of periodicals and newspapers. At the same time, it searched the experiences and opinions of four specialists in labor law, also by means of auto-applied questionnaire. In accordance with the obtained results, the work describes the form of labor risk management adopted by "Grupo Eberle Mundial" and answers the specific objectives in the terms ahead synthesized. It demonstrates that the enterprise keeps routines for identification of labor risks; however, it does not define previously what relevant and non relevant risks are. It identifies a diversity of labor risks perceived by the company and verifies that these do not enclose operational risks. It shows that the organization created its own methods and tools for the management of its labor risks; that it acts in a permanent way to prevent these risks and makes the annual revision of its processes, searching to achieve the internalization of this philosophy as part of its culture. Nevertheless, it crystallizes that the company does not keep a system that integrates its procedures, in the form proposed by the bibliography. It confirms that, through the project developed by the new administration, up to 2003 the "Grupo Eberle Mundial", which in 1998 was with its survival compromised, has reduced in more than 50% the financial losses that it has been suffering and reestablished its internal and external credibility and image. It evidences that there is compromise of the high management of the company with the labor risk management; however, this is not known by all members of the executive board. It points out that the company does not keep specific area for management of its labor risks, nor does it have clear who is responsible for these procedures.

This work identifies the fragilities and virtues of companies and classifies them relating the use of techniques of loss prevention. The used methodology is based in a revision of the available literature on measurements and techniques of loss prevention, analyzing the processes that techniques needed to be adopted to reduce losses, approaching the "pillars" of loss prevention, the cycle life of products in retail and cycles of continues improvement in business. Based on the objectives of this work and on the light of researched techniques, was defined the case study, developed from a questionnaire application and the researcher's observation on a net of 16 small supermarkets. From those studies a model of classification of companies was created. The practical implications of this work are useful to point mistakes in retail administration that can become losses, reducing the profitability of companies or even making them impracticable. The academic contribution of this study is a proposal of an unpublished model of classification for small supermarkets based on the use of techniques of loss prevention. As a result of the research, 14 companies were classified as Companies with Minimum Use of Loss Prevention Techniques - CMULPT, and 02 companies were classified as Companies with Deficient Use of Loss Prevention Techniques - CDULPT. The result of the research concludes that on average the group was classified as being Companies with Minimum Use of Techniques of Prevention of Losses EUMTPP, and that the companies should adopt a program of loss prevention focusing in the identification and quantification of losses and in a implantation of a culture of loss prevention / Este estudo trata da import?ncia do uso de t?cnicas de reven??o de perdas no pequeno varejo supermercadista, analisando e criando um modelo de classifica??o quanto ao uso destas t?cnicas nas empresas.

Development of a novel, clinically-relevant model for investigating factors that stimulate human hair growth

Miranda, Benjamin H. January 2011 (has links)
Lack of hair due to alopecia or skin grafting procedures causes significant distress due to hair's role in social and sexual communication. Only limited pharmacological agents are currently available to stimulate hair growth; their development is hampered by inappropriate model systems. Most research involves large terminal scalp follicles rather than the clinical targets of tiny vellus or intermediate follicles. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop a novel model system based on intermediate hair follicles. Initially, intermediate follicles from female pre-auricular skin were characterised and compared to matched terminal follicles. Intermediate follicles were smaller, less pigmented, shorter and possessed a more 'tubular' bulb morphology than their more 'bulbous' terminal counterparts. Significant correlations were demonstrated between various hair follicle measurements and corresponding dermal papilla diameters. Isolated terminal follicles grew significantly more than intermediate hair follicles in organ culture for 9 days. Testosterone (10nM), the major regulator of human hair growth, increased only intermediate follicle growth; the anti-androgen, cyproterone acetate (1¿M), prevented this stimulation, unlike the 5¿-reductase type 2 inhibitor finasteride (40ng/ml). Immunohistochemistry demonstrated androgen receptor and 5¿-reductase type 2 proteins in both follicle types, while quantitative real-time PCR and gene microarray analysis detected their increased gene expression in intermediate follicles. Thus, smaller intermediate follicles showed major morphological and gene expression differences to terminal follicles in vivo and retained significant, biologically-relevant differences in vitro in organ culture including androgen-responsiveness. Therefore, intermediate hair follicles offer a novel, exciting, more clinically relevant, albeit technically difficult, model for future investigations into hair growth.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Adriana Nogueira.pdf: 871584 bytes, checksum: 41fee274b7eea5122b18c42a032a72ed (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-25 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Health can not be seen as just absence of disease, it should be understood from multiple factors including, among other work conditions. In work environments there are different situations and risks conditions for workers health. Among the occupational risks, we can detach the noise. Occupational exposure to noise has been studied by researchers in the field of occupational health, as one of the most prevalent and the risk that exposes many workers around the world. The best known effect of this exposure is Noise-induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) or High Sound Pressure induced Hearing Loss, considered today as one of the most prevalent disease in work environments and therefore the focus of attention prevention and health promotion. The Hearing Loss Prevention Program (HLPP) plays a key role in activities aimed at protecting workers health against the initiation and aggravation caused by occupational noise that lead to consequences for job performance, the family and participation in society. Accordingly we sought to assess the approach of health professionals, who work in occupational health companies in the Industrial Pole of Manaus, face to Hearing Loss Prevention Program in the workplace. The sample consisted of 20 occupational physicians and 20 audiologists. The technique for the collecting information was the interview with open and closed questions and the method of analysis was the content. Three categories were identified that express the knowledge of professionals about the HLPP: pragmatic, disciplinary and systems view. These categories that reflect the performance professional and detach the limitation and advances of care that companies have in relation to workers health in particular, of the hearing. The HLPP as normative and procedural aspect seeks a set measures that require an integrated work of a team of several professionals from different fields. This study shows, however, that there is still a monumental distance between what is and what is proposed. The reasons that show this scenario indicates the need for further studies in order to insert all the social actors and thus detach the context in several dimensions.
