Microchannel Radiator: an Investigation of Microchannel Technology with Applications in Automotive Radiator Heat Exchangers

Checketts, Gus Thomas 08 1900 (has links)
Microchannels have been used in electronics cooling and in air conditioning applications as condensers. Little study has been made in the application of microchannels in automotive heat exchangers, particularly the radiator. The presented research captures the need for the design improvement of radiator heat exchangers in heavy-duty vehicles in order to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel economy. A method for analyzing an existing radiator is set forth including the needed parameters for effective comparisons of alternative designs. An investigation of microchannels was presented and it was determined that microchannels can improve the overall heat transfer of a radiator but this alone will not decrease the dimensions of the radiator. Investigations into improving the air-side heat transfer were considered and an improved fin design was found which allows a reduction in frontal area while maintaining heat transfer. The overall heat transfer of the design was improved from the original design by 7% well as 52% decrease in frontal area but at the cost of 300% increase in auxiliary power. The energy saved by a reduction in frontal area is not substantial enough to justify the increase of auxiliary power. The findings were verified through a computational fluid dynamic model to demonstrate the heat transfer and pressure drop of microchannel tubes. The results confirmed that heat transfer of microchannels does improve the thermal performance of the radiator but the pressure drop is such that the net benefit does not outweigh the operating cost. An additional CFD study of the new fin geometry and air-side heat transfer predictions was conducted. The results of the study confirmed the theoretical calculations for the fin geometry.

Návrh nástroje pro výrobu prolisů / Design of Tool for Louvers Production

Hejna, Jaroslav January 2020 (has links)
This thesis presents a tool design for production of embossments into the bottom part of the agricultural silo made of Dx51D material. The research analysis all technologies used for embossing, that is cutting and shallow drawing. This is followed by a chapter on simulation. The tool design itself is described. Its principle is based on tools for punching machines. The upper half of the tool is composed of a weldment to be clamped into pressing machine, into which are mounted functional parts in the form of inserts. The lower tool consists of several bolted plates, punches and a holding plate, which is located on the springs. In order to achieve correct design, necessary calculations were carried out and it was all confirmed by simulation in ANSYS. The two tool halfs are guided by pins attached at the edges of the lower tool. The technical - economical evaluation compares the work of the proposed tool with other possibilities of embossing.

Enhanced Finned-Tube Condenser Design and Optimization

Stewart, Susan White 26 November 2003 (has links)
Enhanced Finned-Tube Condenser Design and Optimization Susan W. Stewart 173 pages Directed by Dr. Sam V. Shelton Finned-tube heat exchangers are widely used in space conditioning systems, as well as any other application requiring heat exchange between liquids and gases. Their most widespread use is in residential air conditioning systems. Residential systems dictate peak demand on the U.S. national grid, which occurs on the hot summer afternoons, and thereby sets the expensive infrastructure requirement of the nations power plant and electrical distribution system. In addition to peak demand, residential air conditioners are major energy users that dominate residential electrical costs and environmental impact. The only significant opportunity for electrical power use reduction of residential air conditioners is in technology improvement of the finned-tube heat exchangers, i.e., condenser and evaporator coils. With the oncoming redesign of these systems in the next five years to comply with the regulatory elimination of R-22 used in residential air conditioners today, improvement in the design technology of these systems is timely. An air conditioner condenser finned-tube coil design optimization methodology is derived and shown to lead to improved residential air conditioner efficiency at fixed equipment cost. This nonlinear optimization of the 14 required design parameters is impractical by systematic experimental testing and iteration of tens of thousands condenser coils in an air conditioning system. The developed methodology and results can be used in the redesign of residential systems for the new mandated environmentally friendly refrigerants and to meet increasing regulatory minimum system efficiencies. Additionally, plain fins and augmented fins, (louvered), are compared using the developed model and optimization scheme to show the effect of the augmentation on system performance. Furthermore, an isolated condenser model was developed using condenser entropy generation minimization as the figure of merit to minimize the model complexity and computation time. Isolated model optimizations are compared with the system model optimum designs.

Avaliação teórico/experimental do desempenho termo-hidráulico do ar em trocadores de calor tipo serpentina / Theoretical and experimental evaluation of the air-side thermo-hydraulic performance in heat exchangers air coils type

Zoghbi Filho, João Roberto Bastos 12 February 2004 (has links)
The research reported herein is about a theoretical and experimental study of the effects of geometric and constructive parameters of compact heat exchangers of the coil type for refrigeration and air conditioning applications over the air-side thermo-hydraulic performance. For that purpose, 15 commercial coils have been submitted to tests in an experimental set-up where both the inlet conditions of the air and those of the warm water, used as tube fluid, could be adequately controlled and adjusted. Wavy and convex louver fin coils with different fin density, number of tube rows, and tube spacing and diameter have been investigated. A computer simulation program of air coils has been developed as a working tool in the experimental results treatment and manipulation. The obtained experimental results follow closely established trends of the literature regarding the effects of the geometric parameters over the thermo-hydraulic performance of the air flow in the coils. Some correlations from the literature compare reasonably well with the experimental results though some have shown important discrepancies. It has also been investigated the performance of the different geometric configurations through a second law of Thermodynamics analysis. Finally, experimental results have been curve fitted in such a way to develop generalized correlations for the air-side heat transfer and friction coefficients that include all the important geometric parameters of the aircoils. Such correlations have proved to fit the experimental results with reasonable accuracy.

Influência de parâmetros geométricos no desempenho termo-hidráulico do lado do ar em serpentinas / Influence of geometric parameters on the air-side performance of air coils

The aim of the present research was to analyze the termo-hidraulic performance of the air side of plate-fin-and-tube heat exchangers. A literature survey has been carried out in two different areas: thermo-hidraulic performance and surface selection, done by performance comparisons, to optimize heat exchangers design. The main thrust of the research has been in the experimental evaluation of ten coils in order to investigate the effect of the following parameters over the air side performance: number of tube rows, fin density, tubes internal surface and surface fins (wavy or louvered). Experiments have been carried out with warm water as the tube fluid in a test bench with control capabilities which allowed the accurate control and measurement of air and water conditions. Comparisons with data available in the literature for similar conditions have revealed that the trends of the present results are consistent and adequate. Heat transfer and pressure drop results of the present investigation are not adequately correlated by equations from literature, deviations being attributable to differences in the geometry of the fins. Finally, a procedure for fin surface selection has been tested based on the ratio between the heat transfer rate and the pumping power. The best performing surface among the ones tested was the louver fin in a four tube row coil

Felinus Domus: A Veterinary Hospital for Cats in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Butterworth, Mary Michele 15 April 2008 (has links)
Throughout time man has discovered that the human form, in all its harmonious proportion, can be used as a guide, gauge and tool to design and build structures. However, the human figure has not been the only organic form used to create architecture. Many animals create dwellings that synchronize with not only their own unique physical characteristics and survival instincts, but with their aesthetic preferences as well. It is logical that a design should respond to its surroundings, program and most importantly, its inhabitants. This thesis design is for two specific occupants: the cat and the human. They are both meant to inhabit the building wholly and simultaneously. The way each of them experiences and uses the space, however, differs greatly. For a building to survive it needs many of the same things as living creatures: sunlight, air and movement, to name a few. It also needs to function like a living creature. It must breathe, sleep, respond to the changing seasons, and adapt over time. This thesis is an investigation of how both human and cat can dwell in a building of harmonious proportion, scale, light, and material. / Master of Architecture
