Spatial–temporal Modelling for Estimating Impacts of Storm Surge and Sea Level Rise on Coastal Communities: The Case of Isle Madame in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

Pakdel, Sahar 26 August 2011 (has links)
More frequent and harsh storms coupled with sea level rise are affecting Canada’s sensitive coastlines. This research studies Isle Madame in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia which has been designated by Natural Resource Canada as a sea level rise vulnerable coastal community in Canada. The research models the spatial and temporal impacts of sea level rise from storm surge by focusing on identifying vulnerable areas in the community via geographical information systems (GIS) using ArcGIS, as well as modeling dynamic coastal damage via system dynamics using STELLA. The research evaluates the impacts in terms of the environmental, social, cultural, economic pillars that profile the coastal community for a series of modelled Storm Scenarios. This research synthesizes information from a variety of sources including the coastal ecology and natural resources, as well as human society and socioeconomic indicators included in the four mentioned pillars. The objective of the research is to determine vulnerable areas on Isle Madame susceptible to storm damage, and consequently, to improve local community knowledge and preparedness to more frequent harsh storms. This research therefore presents a dynamic model for the evaluation of storm impacts in Isle Madame designed with the goal to help the community ultimately to plan and implement a strategy to adapt to pending environmental change.

A study of the histories and inspirations behind selections of songs from the soprano repertoire

Knoles, Katherine Louise January 1900 (has links)
Master of Music / Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance / Patricia Thompson / The purpose of this graduate report is to explore the influential stories and historical aspects behind the composition of selected works from the soprano repertoire. This document is completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music degree in vocal performance. The recital was held on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at seven-thirty o’clock in the evening at the First Presbyterian Church, located on 801 Leavenworth Street in Manhattan, KS. Works for this recital were chosen to create a contrasting and unique program to span the soprano repertoire from the Baroque era to late twentieth century, and to display the histories and influences of these compositions. The following works are examined in detail within this document: 1. “Komm in mein Herzenhaus” from Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80, by Johann Sebastian Bach 2. “On mighty pens” from The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn 3. Fêtes galantes I (1882) by Claude Debussy 1. “En sourdine” 2. “Fantoches” 3. “Clair de lune” 4. “Senza mama” from Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini 5. As it fell upon a day by Aaron Copland 6. A Letter from Sullivan Ballou by John Kander 7. “What Good Would the Moon Be?” from Street Scene by Kurt Weill 8. Les filles de Cadix by Léo Delibes Each chapter of this document is dedicated to a specific work from the program, and contains the following: 1) biographical information on the composer, 2) historical information and influences on the composition as well as from its grander counterpart if the selection is from a larger work, and 3) a textual and musical analysis of the selection.

D'un siècle à l'autre : les inflexions de la pensée morale chez Geneviève Thiroux d'Arconville (1720-1805)

Pomminville, Shanon January 2015 (has links)

The cultural code in La princesse de Cleves

Davis, Lenore Jane January 1978 (has links)
This study of Madame de la Payette's La Prlncesse de Cleves proceeds from a general overview of the cultural and social mores presented in the novel to examine the stylistic components upon which it is structured—the maxim or generalizing statement. It brings into play the relationship between the author and her audience, the questions of cultural and creative verisimilitude, and the seventeenth and twentieth-century critical reactions to the novel. Through close textual analysis, a definition of the cultural code, its content and its manifestation in the novel, is revealed. The code's foundation on public opinion and social practice is demonstrated in the numerous maxims and generalizing statements which support or contradict specific actions in the novel. The question of conformity or non-conformity to the code as illustrated by actions leads into a discussion of verisimilitude in the novel as a whole. The seventeenth century's insistence upon cultural vralsemblance is contrasted with the twentieth-century concepts of naturalization and creative vralsemblance. While this study finds that for the twentieth-century reader there may be some lapses of understanding with regard to small details of life in the society which Is described in the novel, it nonetheless shows that La Prlncesse de Gleves observes the prescriptions of its genre, the conventions of vraisemblance as they apply to the novel, and that Mme de la Fayette warrants consideration for her avant garde approach to recording the effects of the social attitudes of her time. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate
