Though enchanting us, or scaring us with actions which we can t find logical answers to, who they are, how they live and what they think are just some of the questions that we make when we see the most different forms that are used when they present themselves in the streets, overall when this passing happens at night, a time of day that is usually linked to the idea of rebelliousness and amoral attitudes. With black clothes, make up in their faces, dark look, the gothic ones that pass through São Paulo city carry, in their speech and aesthetic all the characteristics that were pointed before, being considered, lots of times, as demoniac and phantasmagoric beings. This dissertation worried, because, with the comprehension of the imaginary and aesthetic of these young people from São Paulo, remaking, with them, the trajectory through the nights of the city, as well as frequenting some of their privet spaces, in special the Madame Satã bar. In the matter of ethnographic stories through the gothic spaces in the city of São Paulo, this research, divided in three chapters, had, as its major objective, the will to show that the new gothics of this city, in contrast of what is known from the decade of 1980, the myth of vampire and the gothic movement possess a relation that go both ways and, the line that aligned these two aspects is the aesthetic, that connects itself, as Delleuze and Guattari demonstrate (2005), the mythic living and the nomadism of those who walk through the space, having the search of life s meaning in this perambulation and a living of timing that is different of those that don t comprehend their symbologies. Therefore, it is the eternal human search for a meaning. From the main challenges of observation, it was distinguished: 1) comprehend what are the messages that gothic people want and transmit to the society of São Paulo through their mortuary aesthetic; and, 2) Point and study what are the symbologies and myths that make this aesthetic, at first european, being used as identity construction of a selected group in the city of São Paulo, seeing, in special, the clothes, the places that they often frequent, their musical and arty taste and ways of showing their bodies. Knowing these young people from inside, in their coexisting places in São Paulo city, it studied, as well, the main artworks specially the modern literature, whose major reference is in the American writer Anne Rice since it had the hypotheses that these help to build their aesthetic notions today, for instance, the way they speech, the truth of each young person that frequent the movement, the way they use their bodies to pass messages with no need of verbalizing them, their ways of staring, dancing or even sitting and walking / A juventude das metrópoles atuais tem se mostrado como uma das principais incógnitas daqueles que habitam as cidades.

Spatial–temporal Modelling for Estimating Impacts of Storm Surge and Sea Level Rise on Coastal Communities: The Case of Isle Madame in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

Pakdel, Sahar 26 August 2011 (has links)
More frequent and harsh storms coupled with sea level rise are affecting Canada’s sensitive coastlines. This research studies Isle Madame in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia which has been designated by Natural Resource Canada as a sea level rise vulnerable coastal community in Canada. The research models the spatial and temporal impacts of sea level rise from storm surge by focusing on identifying vulnerable areas in the community via geographical information systems (GIS) using ArcGIS, as well as modeling dynamic coastal damage via system dynamics using STELLA. The research evaluates the impacts in terms of the environmental, social, cultural, economic pillars that profile the coastal community for a series of modelled Storm Scenarios. This research synthesizes information from a variety of sources including the coastal ecology and natural resources, as well as human society and socioeconomic indicators included in the four mentioned pillars. The objective of the research is to determine vulnerable areas on Isle Madame susceptible to storm damage, and consequently, to improve local community knowledge and preparedness to more frequent harsh storms. This research therefore presents a dynamic model for the evaluation of storm impacts in Isle Madame designed with the goal to help the community ultimately to plan and implement a strategy to adapt to pending environmental change.

Laurin, Jacinthe January 1995 (has links)
Integrating a thematic perspective and textual analysis into the method, this Master's thesis proposes to study the theme and images of death in Madame Bovary. This essay analyses the representation of death, the relationships with the survivors and the links with the main character. It demonstrates the egoistic perception of death among the survivors and explains the thematic advancement in chapter VIII of the third part of the novel. The peripheral elements of death, such as the character Lestiboudois, the cemetery, the taboos and the generally accepted ideas, are studied in the first chapter. The second is devoted to Emma Bovary's romantic conception of death, through an analysis of artistic influences and inspirations, romantic mysticism, and complacency with regards to the idea of death. I will be studying the causes of her suicide, her desire to die, her distress experienced in love, her financial bankruptcy and her emotional and physical disequilibrium in the third chapter, which ends with the study of the thematic "spiral" in chapter VIII of the third section: the race, God, time, love, nature, anguish, emotional and physical disequilibrium and death, without neglecting the various interpretations of the Blind Man's ditty. In the fourth chapter, I study the mourning, suffering and social conventions, the influence from beyond the grave upon the survivors, the grave, the memories and immortality. Finally, the last chapter, so as to integrate the various notions explained in the preceding chapters, analyses the consequences of each death in the novel upon the survivors and their reactions.
