Magnetic Characteristics of Carboniferous Continental Depositional Systems: Implications for the Recognition of Depositional Hiatuses

Quaternary magnetic studies have provided the conceptual framework to bridge magnetic studies into ancient systems. In cases where environmental materials have been subjected to diagenetic alteration two questions come to mind: 1) What part of the magnetic signal is preserved in the rocks; and 2) can the preserved signal be used to infer/identify magnetic patterns that are characteristic of the depositional, post-depositional, and/or diagenetic environment. Analyses of multi-parameter magnetic experiments conducted on upper Mississippian and lower Pennsylvanian continental successions reveal that distinct depositional, pedogenic, and diagenetic magnetic patterns can be separated and identified. Evidence for a primary depositional signal in several of the upper Mississippian lithofacies is identified by a detrital remanence component attributed to source-area-derived magnetite/titanomagnetite. Red and gray vertisols preserve a Mississippian pedogenic signal characterized by magnetic enrichment, depletion, and amalgamation patterns that are associated with the removal and transport of Fe-rich clays as well as vertical mixing by shrink-swell mechanisms. These well-developed vertisols are interpreted to reflect significant hiatuses in sedimentation associated with prolonged exposure on interfluve/floodplain surfaces that may correlative with incised valleys (lowstand surface of erosion). Similarly, in lower Pennsylvanian quartz arenite facies, early siderite cementation zones as well as conglomerate lags with distinctive magnetic characteristics are thought to reflect periods of prolonged exposure and to define unconformities within compound valley fills. / Master of Science

This diploma thesis is focused on investigation of metallic thin films and nanostructures using scanning probe microscopy. Magnetic properties of these objects are studied by magnetic force microscopy, which is modification of scanning probe microscopy. In the theoretical part basic principles of scanning probe microscopy and magnetic force microscopy are summarized, and also principle of creation of magnetic domains and some special properties of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. Further, two techniques of fabricating nanostructures are described. Experimental part is focused on imaging and simulating of magnetic domains. Further, exchange bias is revealed. This phenomenon is present in systems composed from ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. One part of this diploma thesis is also focused on discussion of problems with magnetic force microscopy.

Caractéristiques magnétiques de matériaux doux sous l'action de contraintes mécaniques cycliques / Magnetic characteristics of soft materials by the action of cyclic mechanical stresses

La thèse porte sur la caractérisation et la modélisation d'un échantillon ferromagnétique doux de Fer-Cobalt sous stimulation mécanique vibratoire. Le banc de caractérisation permet de maîtriser l'amplitude et la fréquence de la sollicitation mécanique au travers d’actionneurs piézoélectriques. Le cycle d'hystérésis magnétique ainsi que l'amplitude des déformations mécaniques sont mesurés simultanément lorsque l'échantillon torique est sollicité en flexion longitudinale. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent une réduction importante de l'hystérésis magnétique statique. Les réductions de coercivité sont corrélées linéairement à l'amplitude des contraintes élastiques exercées sur le tore quelle que soit la fréquence mécanique des vibrations. Ces réductions, observées en présence d'une contrainte externe cyclique, sont associées à des décrochements de parois de Bloch lorsque celles-ci sont piégées par des défauts de contraintes internes. Pour interpréter ces résultats, une modélisation de l'interaction paroi - défaut est proposée à l'aide d'une approche énergétique. Les profils d'interaction énergétique entre paroi et défaut permettent alors d'exprimer la coercivité attribuée aux défauts de contrainte interne en présence d'une contrainte externe d'amplitude et/ou de direction variable(s). Le modèle met en évidence la nécessité d'explorer un grand nombre d'états mécaniques pour chaque valeur de champ magnétique. Les portées applicatives de ces travaux sont proposées à l'issue d'un bilan énergétique effectué sur le système d'excitation magnéto-mécanique. Cette étude ouvre de nouvelles voies pour des dispositifs de récupération d'énergie mécanique vibratoire ainsi que pour des systèmes de désaimantation par activation mécanique. / This study deals with the characterization and modeling of a soft ferromagnetic sample of Cobalt-Iron under vibratory mechanical stimulation. The characterization test bench allows to control the magnitude and the frequency of the mechanical solicitation through piezoelectric actuators. The magnetic hysteresis loop and the magnitude of the mechanical deformations are measured simultaneously when the ring sample is placed under longitudinal bending. The experimental results show a significant reduction of the static magnetic hysteresis. Decreases of coercivity are linearly correlated to the amplitude of elastic strain applied on the torus regardless of the mechanical vibration frequency. These reductions, observed under a cyclic external stress, are associated with the depinning of Bloch domain walls when they encounter residual stress defects. To clarify these results, a modeling of the interaction between domain wall and defect is proposed using an energy approach. Energy profiles interaction is used to express the coercivity attributed to residual stress defects in the presence of an external stress of both variable amplitude and/or variable direction(s). The model highlights the need to explore a large number of mechanical states for each magnetic field value. Finally, applications raised by this work are proposed from an energy balance analysis performed on the magneto-mechanical excitation system. This study opens new opportunities for vibratory mechanical energy harvesting devices and systems for demagnetization by mechanical activation.

In the sequence, studies related to the magnetic hysteresis and to the magnetic losses, especially in silicon steels, are presented. The magnetic hysteresis in silicon steels has been analysed through the inverse version of the Jiles–Atherton classical model and through a modified one found in the literature. Concerning the determination of its parameters, the theory and the computational implementation of the heuristic method known as “Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA)” have been addressed. Within this context, it was possible to investigate two drawbacks of the Jiles–Atherton model: i) the modeling of the so–called inner loops; and ii) the modeling of the minor loops. In the study of the magnetic losses in silicon steels, it was employed in this work the Bertotti´s model, which establishes the total magnetic losses division in three independent components: hysteresis losses, classical losses, and excess losses. It was investigated two versions of this model, so–called B1 and B2, in which the magnetic hysteresis losses are modeled respectively through the Steinmetz´s model and through the theory of two–portion hysteresis losses subdivision: the one so-called high induction hysteresis losses, and the other, low induction hysteresis losses. Due to some failures, a new approach was chosen reviewing two of the model coefficients calculation: the one related to the classic loss, and the other related to the excess loss. After this reviewing, the magnetic loss models could present predictions that are more exact. / Apresenta-se inicialmente neste trabalho o desenvolvimento e a implementação de uma nova metodologia para controlar a forma de onda da indução magnética, a qual foi inserida no sistema de medição automatizado para a caracterização de materiais magnéticos moles, denominado SCaMMa. Na sequência, apresentam-se estudos relativos à histerese magné- tica e às perdas magnéticas que ocorrem nesses materiais, especialmente os aços para fins elétricos. A histerese magnética em aços para fins elétricos foi abordada através da versão inversa do modelo clássico de Jiles–Atherton e através de uma versão modificada, encontrada na literatura, desse mesmo modelo. Em relação à determinação dos parâmetros desse modelo, são abordadas a teoria e a implementação computacional do método heurístico conhecido como “Algoritmo do Embaralhamento dos Sapos Saltitantes” (tradução livre de Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA)). Nesse contexto, pôde-se investigar duas deficiências do modelo de Jiles–Atherton: modelagem dos laços de histerese ditos internos e modelagem dos laços de histerese menores. No estudo das perdas magnéticas em aços elétricos, empregou–se o modelo de Bertotti, o qual estabelece a divisão das perdas magnéticas totais em três componentes independentes: perdas por histerese, perdas clássicas e perdas em excesso. Foram investigadas duas versões desse modelo, os modelos denominados B1 e B2, nos quais as perdas por histerese são modeladas respectivamente através do modelo de Steinmetz e da teoria de subdivisão destas perdas em duas outras: perdas por histerese em altas e em baixas induções. Diante de alguns insucessos, optou-se por uma nova abordagem desse assunto, fazendo uma revisão do cálculo dos coeficientes relacionados à perda clássica e à perda em excesso desses modelos. Essa revisão se mostrou bastante efetiva, no sentido de que a partir de então, os modelos de previsão de perdas possibilitaram a obtenção de resultados mais exatos.

Iron Losses in Electrical Machines - Influence of Material Properties, Manufacturing Processes, and Inverter Operation

As the major electricity consumer, electrical machines play a key role for global energy savings. Machine manufacturers put considerable efforts into the development of more efficient electrical machines for loss reduction and higher power density achievements. A consolidated knowledge of the occurring losses in electrical machines is a basic requirement for efficiency improvements. This thesis deals with iron losses in electrical machines. The major focus is on the influences of the stator core magnetic material due to the machine manufacturing process, temperature influences, and the impact of inverter operation. The first part of the thesis gives an overview of typical losses in electrical machines, with focus put on iron losses. Typical models for predicting iron losses in magnetic materials are presented in a comprehensive literature study. A broad comparison of magnetic materials and the introduction of a new material selection tool conclude this part. Next to the typically used silicon-iron lamination alloys for electrical machines, this thesis investigates also cobalt-iron and nickel-iron lamination sheets. These materials have superior magnetic properties in terms of saturation magnetization and hysteresis losses compared to silicon-iron alloys. The second and major part of the thesis introduces the developed measurement system of this project and presents experimental iron loss investigations. Influences due to machine manufacturing changes are studied, including punching, stacking and welding effects. Furthermore, the effect of pulse-width modulation schemes on the iron losses and machine performance is examined experimentally and with finite-element method simulations. For nickel-iron lamination sheets, a special focus is put on the temperature dependency, since the magnetic characteristics and iron losses change considerably with increasing temperature. Furthermore, thermal stress-relief processes (annealing) are examined for cobalt-iron and nickel-iron alloys by magnetic measurements and microscopic analysis. A thermal method for local iron loss measurements is presented in the last part of the thesis, together with experimental validation on an outer-rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine. / <p>QC 20140516</p>

Contrôle non destructif par courants de Foucault de milieux ferromagnétiques : de l’expérience au modèle d’interaction / Eddy current non destructive testing of ferromagnetic materials : experimentation and modeling

La problématique étudiée est le contrôle non destructif par courants de Foucault de matériaux ferromagnétiques à l’aide d’un capteur à magnétorésistance géante (GMR). Durant ces travaux deux aspects complémentaires ont été abordés : l’un concerne la mesure expérimentale pour essayer de quantifier et de s’affranchir du bruit de structure et du champ magnétique rémanent, l’autre le développement d’un modèle numérique d’interaction. En ce qui concerne la partie expérimentale plusieurs études avec un capteur GMR qui présente un intérêt particulier en raison de sa bonne sensibilité à basses fréquences, de sa dynamique et de la relative simplicité de mise en œuvre ont été conduites et ont permis d’identifier et quantifier les phénomènes d’artefacts spécifiques aux matériaux ferromagnétiques : le bruit de structure et le champ magnétique rémanent. Une solution basée sur une combinaison linéaire des données expérimentales obtenues à plusieurs fréquences est appliquée pour atténuer le bruit dû à la structure du matériau. Le champ magnétique rémanent a été analysé expérimentalement et un circuit d’asservissement permettant de fixer un point de polarisation dans la zone de fonctionnement linéaire de la GMR et ainsi d’atténuer les perturbations dues aux champs magnétiques rémanents est mis en place. En parallèle et dans l’optique de développer des outils de simulation permettant de mieux comprendre les phénomènes physiques et ainsi d’optimiser les procédés de contrôle, un modèle numérique d’interaction simulant le cas du contrôle d’une pièce plane ferromagnétique d’une ou plusieurs couches pouvant contenir un ou plusieurs défauts est développé. Il étend un modèle déjà existant dans un cas non-ferromagnétique déjà intégré dans la plateforme de simulation CIVA développé par le CEA-LIST et permettant la simulation du Contrôle Non Destructif par Courants de Foucault. Il est basé sur une méthode d’intégrales de volume (VIM) et l’utilisation des tenseurs ou dyades de Green. La solution est obtenue après la discrétisation du volume de calcul et l’application d’une variante de Galerkin de la Méthode des Moments (MoM). La réponse de la sonde est ensuite calculée en appliquant le théorème de réciprocité de Lorentz. Des collaborations avec deux laboratoires universitaires (le Laboratoire de Génie Électrique de Paris (LGEP) et l’Université de Cassino (Italie)) ont permis de comparer les résultats issus des trois différents modèles sur un cas de la littérature. Les résultats se sont révélés satisfaisants et plusieurs études de convergence ont permis d’analyser la stabilité du modèle. / The aim of this work is the eddy-current testing (ECT) of ferromagnetic materials within magnetic sensors, such as Giant Magneto-Resistances (GMR). Two complementary aspects have been studied. Experimental measurements have been carried out in order to quantify and minimize the noise coming from the materials structure and residual magnetization. On the other hand, a model has been developed in order to be able to simulate the electromagnetic interactions between a ferromagnetic specimen and the EC probe. The GMR sensors are characterized by high sensitivity at low frequency, large dynamic range and are relatively easy to implement. The studies carried out during this thesis allowed us to identify and analyse the “ghost signals” due to magnetic materials. In order to minimize the noise coming from the materials structure, a linear multi-frequencies combination of experimental signals has been employed successfully and the detection of buried flaws has been improved. The residual magnetization in ferromagnetic materials has been experimentally analyzed and an electronic system has been realized to fix the polarisation point of the sensor in the linear response zone of the GMR. Thus, disturbances caused by residual magnetization are successfully reduced. Beside, in order to develop simulation tools aiming at improving the understanding of experimental signals and optimizing the performances of ECT procedures, a model has been developed to simulate the ECT of planar, stratified and ferromagnetic materials affected with multiple flaws. CEA developed for many years semi-analytical models embedded into the simulation platform CIVA dedicated to non-destructive testing. Following a previous work carried out at the laboratory and already integrated in the simulation platform CIVA, developed at CEA-LIST, the new model extends CIVA functionalities to the ferromagnetic planar case. Simulation results are obtained through the application of the Volume Integral Method (VIM) which involves the dyadic Green’s functions. Two coupled integral equations have to be solved and the numerical resolution of the system is carried out using the classical Galerkin variant of the Method of Moments (MoM). Finally, the probe response is calculated by application of the Lorentz reciprocity theorem. A collaboration with the University of Cassino (Italy) and Laboratoire de Génie Electrique de Paris (France) allowed us to compare the three models on experimental and numerical results from literature. Results showed a good agreement between the three models and the model stability has been analyzed.

Μοντελοποίηση και εξομοίωση μετασχηματιστών διανομής για την διασύνδεση συστημάτων ήπιων μορφών ενέργειας

Αναπτύσσεται ένα πλήρες δυναμικό μοντέλο μετασχηματιστή που λαμβάνει υπόψη τη γεωμετρία του πυρήνα και τη συνδεσμολογία των τυλιγμάτων. Το μοντέλο μπορεί εύκολα να ενσωματωθεί στις καταστατικές εξισώσεις ενός συστήματος ισχύος με σκοπό τη μελέτη της δυναμικής του απόκρισης και τον υπολογισμό ανωτέρων αρμονικών. Ο βρόχος υστέρησης του υλικού του πυρήνα εισάγεται με το μοντέλο που: (α) προτείνει ο Tellinen και (β) προτείνουν οι Jiles και Atherton. Τα μοντέλα αυτά υπολογίζουν σωστά τις απώλειες υστέρησης του πυρήνα, επιτρέποντας στα διάφορα τμήματα του πυρήνα να διαγράφουν διαφορετικούς βρόχους. Η επίδραση των δινορευμάτων ενσωματώνεται στο μοντέλο με μη γραμμικές ωμικές αντιστάσεις για τον υπολογισμό των οποίων αξιοποιούνται οι σχετικές με τα δινορεύματα, ευρέως αποδεκτές, εργασίες του Bertotti. Ο πίνακας Ld των αυξητικών επαγωγών του μετασχηματιστή υπολογίζεται για οποιαδήποτε γεωμετρία πυρήνα και αριθμό τυλιγμάτων με την βοήθεια του Ισοδυνάμου Αυξητικού Κυκλώματος (ΙΑΚ) του πυρήνα. Ο αναλυτικός υπολογισμός των στοιχείων του πίνακα Ld αναδεικνύει τον τρόπο εξάρτησης των αυξητικών επαγωγών του μετασχηματιστή από τη γεωμετρία του πυρήνα και από τη χαρακτηριστική καμπύλη του υλικού. / A dynamic and complete transformer model is developed which takes into account the magnetic core geometry and the windings connections. This model can easily be incorporated with the state equations of a power system, in order to calculate its dynamic response and the harmonic content. The magnetic hysteresis of the core material is introduced the model that is proposed by: (a) Tellinen and (b) Jiles and Atherton. These models can estimate the hysteresis power losses even when the hysteresis loops into several parts of the core differ. The eddy currents effects are incorporated into the model by non-linear ohmic resistances which are based on Bertotti’s work for the eddy currents. The matrix Ld of the incremental inductances of the windings is calculated, for any possible core geometry and number of windings, using the Equivalent Incremental Circuit (EIC) of the core. The analytical calculation of the elements of the matrix Ld shows the dependency of the incremental inductances on the core geometry and the characteristic curve of the core material.
