A critique of the Marxist theory of social evolution with particular reference to Erik Molnar's A Magyar nep ostortenete

Hamori-Torok, Charles January 1960 (has links)
This paper intends to show the application of the Marxist theory of social evolution to the reconstruction of Magyar proto-history and it examines critically this application. E. Molnar, a Hungarian Marxist proto-historian, published a book under the title A Magyar Nep Ostortenete (proto-History of the Magyar People). This work is shown to represent a Marxist response to the ideological importance of proto-historical studies in Hungary. The argument developed in this paper is as follows: 1. The study of proto-history has been important in Hungary scientifically as well as ideologically. Molnar's attempted reconstruction of Magyar proto-history is a most important Marxist response to the scientific and ideological importance of Hungarian proto-historical studies. 2. The application of this Marxist theory of social evolution makes for bad anthropological theory. Molnar is forced by his Marxist persuasion to look for traces of proto-Communistic social organization in the proto-history of the Magyars, and his attempt to do so results in the formulation of some hypotheses that are not borne out by available evidence. 3. American anthropology is not a unified, and codified set of officially endorsed theories as Molnar implies. Even among American evolutionist anthropologists one finds significant differences in approach and emphasis. At the same time, some aspects of American evolutionist anthropology are seen as capable of providing better ways of approaching the problem of proto-historical reconstruction than Molnar's own Marxist doctrine. Molnar's argument is presented in some detail in this paper. His arguments are outlined and commented upon. His linguistic, physical anthropological, archeological and ethnographic material is discussed and interpreted, and his dependence upon Engels and Soviet anthropologists is indicated. The final conclusion of the paper is that the Marxist theory of social evolution as interpreted by Molnar is based on a set of a priori laws which are not validated by the available evidence. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

The Style Hongrois in the Music of Johann Strauss Jr.

Warren, Jackson Eliot January 2012 (has links)
This document examines compositions by Johann Strauss Jr., related by title or compositional circumstance to Hungarians or Gypsies, for the presence of the style hongrois, or Hungarian style--an exotic style used by Western composers throughout the nineteenth century. This study defines the style hongrois through specific musical terms by amalgamating recent scholarship into a lexicon of musical elements and gestures. The compositions under consideration were composed between 1846 and 1896. The study provides background into the development of the style hongrois--including the migration of the Rom, the influence of the dominant Magyar culture within Hungary, the evolution of the verbunkos, and the style hongrois's early overlap with the Turkish style--and the social and political circumstances within Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. The origins of the Viennese dance tradition are traced, and it is revealed that both Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauss Sr. toured to Pest, the capital of Hungary, and composed in the style hongrois. Major works by Johann Strauss Jr. examined in this study include the Pesther Csárdás, op. 23; Éljen a Magyár!, Polka schnell, op. 332; Rosalinde's Csárdás from Die Fledermaus; selections from Der Zigeunerbaron; the Csárdás from Ritter Pásmán; and a new czardas composed for Die Fledermaus in 1896. The study reveals that Strauss used the style hongrois not as a foreign musical language, but as a set of gestures and forms which could be incorporated into his normal style. Nevertheless, Strauss's melodic ingenuity allowed for a fluent use of the style hongrois from the outset. He applied the style in various ways--superficially to existing dance forms, and in full imitations of the verbunk genre. These works were consistently greeted--both in Vienna and Hungary--with praise and acknowledgment of Strauss's success in imitating Gypsy-band music, to which he enjoyed ample exposure. This study--a close inspection of a small subset of Strauss's output--reveals a subtle yet sophisticated evolution in his compositional technique. It also traces the progression of his career--from upstart performer to the cultural symbol of an empire.

The thesis analyses UDMR (RMDSZ/DAHR), the organization that represented the Hungarian minority in the Romanian Parliament between 1990-2004. The third part consists of the analysis of the DAHR and it has as guidelines the following themes: the establishing of DAHR; the electoral results of DAHR; the relationship between DAHR and the Romanian political parties; the relationship between DAHR and the political parties from Hungary; DAHR and the international organizations; the changes of the DAHR’s program; autonomy; the structure of DAHR; the legislative drafts of DAHR; the internal life of DAHR. An Analysis of the Composition Process of Bartók's Eight Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, Op. 20

Kochbeck, Olivia M. 05 1900 (has links)
This is a study of Bartók's compositional process as it relates to the Improvisations, Op. 20. The study, which focuses on the analysis of the draft manuscript 50PS1, compares the draft and other relevant sources with the final composition. Bartók's framework for the entire Improvisations is based on a compositional strategy of pairing individual improvisations combined with systematic revision of the draft copy by the introduction of tritones as tonal equivalents and movement by fifths from semitones, to achieve structural coherence in the individual improvisations. The tonic-dominant relationship is used to rearrange the individual improvisations in the draft and tritones as tonal equivalents are used to propel the movement between the improvisations to produce a coherent whole.
