Tree hollows, tree dimensions and tree age in Eucalyptus microcarpa Maiden (Grey Box) in Victoria

Looby, Matthew James January 2007 (has links)
Eucalyptus microcarpa Maiden (Grey Box) is a common and widespread woodland and open forest in south-eastern Australia. In Victoria, it features prominently in woodlands throughout the southern, central and northern plains environments, and also in the box-ironbark forests of the Great Dividing Range. Temperate grassy woodlands have been extensively modified since European settlement of Victoria and consequently the native biodiversity associated with them has undergone a dramatic decline. Paramount to this decline has been the landscape-scale reduction in tree cover associated with agricultural clearing, which in some regions approaches 95% or pre-European extent. Similar to most other woodland tree species, E. microcarpa is today restricted to small remnant patches or relict individuals within agricultural landscapes where extensive stands once occurred.

The constitutionality of the Maiden Bursary

Mdutywa, Asiphe 30 March 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The South African Constitution and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and other international law instruments are missioned to ensure the advancement and protection of women by eradicating discriminatory actions targeting women, on any platform. The introduction of the Maiden Bursary, to advance the futures of young women, seeks to empower women. However, the process of achieving this advancement perpetuates negative gender stereotypes and a safe haven for discrimination. Therefore, this thesis unpacks the constitutionality and assesses the extent to which the bursary may limit constitutional rights such as equality and dignity. This thesis roots its argument on case law, legislation, and existing literature on virginity testing.

Flowers Bloom and Fall: Representation of The Vimalakirti Sutra In Traditional Chinese Painting

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: The Vimalakirti Sutra is one of the classics of early Indian Mahayana Buddhism. The sutra narrates that Vimalakirti, an enlightened layman, once made it appear as if he were sick so that he could demonstrate the Law of Mahayana Buddhism to various figures coming to inquire about his illness. This dissertation studies representations of The Vimalakirti Sutra in Chinese painting from the fourth to the nineteenth centuries to explore how visualizations of the same text could vary in different periods of time in light of specific artistic, social and religious contexts. In this project, about forty artists who have been recorded representing the sutra in traditional Chinese art criticism and catalogues are identified and discussed in a single study for the first time. A parallel study of recorded paintings and some extant ones of the same period includes six aspects: text content represented, mode of representation, iconography, geographical location, format, and identity of the painter. This systematic examination reveals that two main representational modes have formed in the Six Dynasties period (220-589): depictions of the Great Layman as a single image created by Gu Kaizhi, and narrative illustrations of the sutra initiated by Yuan Qian and his teacher Lu Tanwei. The latter mode, which became more popular than the former in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), experienced adaptation from handscroll to panoramic mural. It is also during this period that a minor scenario, the Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers, became a necessary vignette for representation of the sutra. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), the Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers gradually became an independent theme. This author investigates the thematic shift caused by various factors. These include the transformation of later Chinese narrative painting and the prevalence of shinu hua 仕女畫, painting of beauties, in later Chinese painting. There is also a change in the role of the Heavenly Maiden from one of many maidens to the only and necessary partner of Vimalakirti. Ultimately, the image of the Heavenly Maiden evolves from a Buddhist heavenly being to a Daoist fairy and later to a symbol representing auspicious meanings. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Art History 2011

Production of a discourse. Invention of a public. The case of a heavy metal band from the East-End of London from 1976 to nowadays.

Petesch, Jean-Philippe 03 April 2009 (has links)
Since 1976, the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden has been working at the production of a musical and lyrical discourse dealing with existential and metaphysical topics inspired by literature, cinema and history. Sales of 80 millions records as well as nearly 2,000 concerts world-wide seem to confirm the public’s keen interest in this kind of writing. This study defines the discourse of the band by means of a dual analysis [electronic and traditional] of the lyrics. It focuses on the themes, leitmotivs and intertextualities that can be found in the songs, and attempts to analyse and measure the different levels of influence of the discourse on the life of 4,476 fans from 70 countries encountered via the Internet.

Fertilization and acclimation to the end of the production cycle, are extremely important to promote morphological and physiological changes that enhance the growth and minimize stress damage after field planting. This study aimed to evaluate nitrogen fertilization during the production of whips-horse seedlings (Luehea divaricata Mart.) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden) and quantify changes in morphogenesis after the application of ethylene in plants during hardening. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the State University of Paraná West - UNIOESTE, campus Marechal Cândido Rondon-PR, latitude 24 ° 33 'S, longitude 54 ° 04' W. The work was carried out in a randomized block design in factorial with Additional Witness (3 x 4+1), being used three forms of fertilization (100 mg L-1 conventional N x 100 mg L-1 exponential N x N zero) applied for three months (nine applications) and five treatments with different application rates ethylene, with 6 replicates of five plants per plot. The measured variables were increase of height (IH) and stem diameter (DC), leaf area (LA), dry weight of shoots (MSA), dry weight of roots (MSR), Dickson quality index (IQD) and the activity of peroxidase and lignin content. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test at 5% probability using the Genes program. The exponential and conventional fertilization sustain growth induction hypothesis L. divaricata seedlings and E. grandis for fertilization without nitrogen application in the growth phase, these same effects can be observed in the hardening phase with ethylene spray. The weekly sprays of ethylene induce changes in growth in the hardening phase in L. divaricata seedlings and E. grandis with two gas applications, mainly by reducing the aerial growth, reducing the leaf area and increasing stem size / A formação da muda é uma fase de extrema importância para o sucesso de qualquer povoamento florestal.

Midwife, Young Maiden, and Physician: Image and Authority in Karen Cushman's Female Healers

Turnbow, Angela C. 01 May 2014 (has links)
This study focuses on the characterization of Cushman’s healers in her three medieval novels The Midwife’s Apprentice; Catherine, Called Birdy; and Matilda Bone. I specifically look at the physical descriptions, medical practices, and the healer’s role within the community as an accepted medical authority. Cushman’s portrayals illuminate the different locations and situations in which women practiced medicine during the Middle Ages, thus she presents more historically accurate portrayals of female healers. The significance of this project is that Cushman challenges the stereotype of the isolated and disfigured old crone that has been, perhaps inadvertently, perpetuated by authors and focuses on the historical accuracies of female healers. Many young readers learn about history through novels and it is important that authors present accurate historical representations of the past they are trying to describe to their audiences. In addition, this project will bring multiple disciplines together such as medieval studies, young adult literature, medical history, and folklore in order to illuminate the historical accuracies and representations of female healers.
