The effects of epilepsy on families living in Mamelodi with special reference to the role of the social worker

Ramaboea, Paul Hlabana 11 1900 (has links)
A study of the relevant theoretical concepts and empirical research was undertaken to explore the role of the social worker pertaining to the problem of epilepsy in the black community of Mamelodi. The sample comprised 40 families in which there was a person with epilepsy. Data were obtained through an interview schedule administered by the researcher. The literature study highlighted the phenomenon epilepsy, causes of epilepsy/ psychosocial effects of epilepsy on the epileptic and his family and the treatment of the epileptic. However/ it became quite clear that a multi-disciplinary team approach is vital importance in the treatment of an epileptic Furthermore/ significant others like traditional healers, faith healers, priests, relatives and friends were identified as some of the important informal support systems. Although the findings of study cannot be generalised to the entire population they can be of great significance for further research. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science)

The needs and interests of Mamelodi East Extension Five residents with regard to sport and recreation facilities: implications for service delivery

27 October 2008 (has links)
M.Phil. / The study identifies the needs and interests of the community in Mamelodi Extension 5 with regard to sport and recreation facilities. There is a need to determine the role of sport in society to fulfil the sport-related needs and to find out how these needs can be addressed by the social facilitation of sport. The study offers an understanding of aspects of sport and recreation in the area. A review was done of relevant literature dealing with sport and recreation. The sources used to gather information embodied books, magazines, articles, newspapers, media reports, government reports and information from the internet. Stratified random sampling was used to collect data from the residents of Mamelodi East Extension 5. A questionnaire served as the main data collection tool. It was piloted on thirty (30) residents who did not serve in the final sample of respondents. This assisted to gauge the validity of the questionnaire. The empirical study was done with three hundred (300) questionnaires that were filled in by the respondents to get their views relating to sport and recreation. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect data, which were analysed using SPSS spreadsheets. The study found that sport and recreation facilities were scarce in the area, that only few facilities were available but mostly ill equipped and that most residents did not participate in sport and recreation. The main recommendation was that management of clubs and institutions that deal with sport and recreation be involved in encouraging and assisting residents to use the facilities in their localities. / Prof. C. The role of ward committees in facilitating public participation with particular reference to Mamelodi, South Africa

Madumo, Onkgopotse Senatla 07 October 2011 (has links)
The study examines the role of ward committees in facilitating public participation with particular reference to Mamelodi, South Africa. This study is aimed at establishing whether ward committees serve as effective mechanisms to promote public participation in local government and administration. As a result, the study investigates the composition, functioning and responsibilities of ward committees, and their contributions towards effective and efficient municipal government. Qualitative research methodology is adopted, towards the realisation of the aims and objectives of the study. Accordingly, an interview schedule was utilised as a tool that contains the pre-determined questions prepared in order to acquire insight, knowledge and application of the people who are directly involved and familiar with the ward committee processes. An empirical study was conducted to determine if the research answers the problem statement, and also to measure the failures and success of ward committees in enhancing public participation. The findings proved that ward committees are confronted with a conglomerate of challenges where their functioning tends to be compromised. Consequently, the study made some recommendations after the various arguments relating to the subject matter were presented. This is done, in an attempt to improve the capacity of ward committees and all institutions that play a role in the enhancement of public participation. / Dissertation (MAdmin)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) / unrestricted

A place in the shade of trees : Mthunzini Community Hospice for Mamelodi

Roberts, Hayley Thea 16 November 2010 (has links)
Our society is one in which death has become a predominant influencing factor of our social context, with the dramatic rise in AIDS related deaths. Yet the institutions that accommodate the terminally ill or the dying, have become stale, clinical and mechanical in both their architecture and their processes. This thesis proposes to re-address the physical environment of hospital and clinical architecture that facilitate the process of dying. The design of this Hospice and Educational Facility aims to reintroduce life within the architecture through the embodiment of movement, visual interest, meaning, memory, choice and integration. The project is located within the Mamelodi community along the Eastern edge of the Pienaar River, bordering a green space. The Mamelodi community is vibrant and rich, filled with self-expression and opportunities, and despite its impoverished services and urban fabric it provides the perfect platform for such a facility. Especially when combined with the indomitable spirit of the people who live there. The Project integrates with and serves the immediate context of Mamelodi. Through the facilities provision of functions - including hospice and outpatient functions, education, interaction, architectural language, as well as the community-accessible permaculture garden and redeveloped green space. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

IMVELO (a place for skills development). Construction Centre : Mamelodi : professionals in construction industry in partnership with local community in job creation, upliftment and sustainable environment

Lindeire, Christopher 07 August 2008 (has links)
The design that is substantiated by this discourse is a Construction Centre in Mamelodi Township. The objective is to provide training and skills for those individuals who are unemployed and exhibit talent and skills in arts and other crafts related works. It will provide technical skills to people who want to improve their informal housing. But due to their background, need financial support and opportunity in order to acquire these skills. The centre will also provide research and development facilities in low cost housing and alternative materials in the construction industry. Funding for this project will come from the University of Pretoria (the client), the Department of Science and Technology, and other private organizations interested or involved in construction. The common aim is to contribute to the new Government policy on housing delivery ‘Breaking New Ground, 2004’ which advocates quality of housing rather than quantity as in previous schemes of the Reconstruction Development Programme (RDP). The project’s purpose is to re-direct professional efforts towards the needs of the poor in informal settlements in urban areas. The objective of the centre is not only to educate and train students in the applied arts, crafts and construction field but also to provide them with skills to make a feasible living of it. It also aims to market them by establishing small-medium enterprises. In this way, successful students can have some source of income to finish subsidy housing units or improve their informal housing. Thus, the aim is bridging the idea of art and architecture with the more practical economic business education and improving the built environment. The works produced by students would be marketed and sold by them on the site and in various local enterprises outposts. The training and research development will be provided by renowned and respected artists and craftsmen in order to pass on cultural skills to a younger generation. Professionals, students from University of Pretoria and allied institutions will provide technical and academic research. The research will be on new technology and methods of improving informal housing and low cost housing. Technical assistance will also be provided by former students who return to the centre to teach whilst supporting the idea of giving back to the community what they have been taught. The design is aimed at integrating African applied arts, crafts and local building techniques with Western construction technology, within the urbanized context of Mamelodi. Exhibitions, flea market activities, art and construction workshops as well as performances for children and adults are among the envisaged for the Centre. These would eventually serve to increase public awareness on applied arts, crafts and new building technologies in construction industry within local community. Additionally, the Centre will contribute to the upliftment of the poor and disadvantaged communities through involving them in the construction of the centre itself and assuming that the training facilities in arts, crafts and construction skills provided at the centre can be used by them for use in constructing subsidised houses. It will also help community members in formalising the existing informal construction industries (for example, Zozos and welding workshops) to small-medium construction enterprises in the community. The construction industry will have another source of skilled labour from the graduates of the Centre. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Architecture / unrestricted

Re/claiming the river's edge : the role of landscape architecture in creating meaningful places for a shared sense of community in Mamelodi

Mothowamodimo, Willie Ofentse 02 December 2011 (has links)
Rivers once had meaning to societies. This meaning was associated with agricultural practices, spiritual connection with nature, social interaction and the combination of all these different activities and functions which were enjoyed by the whole community. Today these rivers have little (if any) meaning to society. Meaning has been lost due to neglect, pollution and crime. The spirit of community once associated with these rivers is now under threat. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential of a river system in creating meaningful places for a shared sense of community. It therefore presents an attempt at re/claiming this meaning, through the application of community design theory, with a river’s edge intervention that connects people with others, and communities with the river. The design process started with a site analysis to highlight the challenges and opportunities of the study area, local framework area, masterplan area and focus site. Existing frameworks and precedent studies assisted in compiling guidelines and design principles for the project. The study found that by dealing away with the current negative image of the river and re-introducing activities that the community values, these spaces can be re/claimed as meaningful people spaces. Community design, informed by the concept of place-making, is an appropriate theory for revitalising the river systems which cut through urban landscapes and disconnect communities. This study suggest that a landscape design based on community ethics, aspirations and cultural values i.e. social aspects of landscape architecture, is most likely to succeed in the long run as it creates a sense of belonging and ownership. / Dissertation (ML(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

A building of living stones : a community service centre for Mamelodi East

Nel, Tamryn 30 November 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims to, from the perspective of architecture and urban place making, examine the potential of a church as a catalytic nodal public building and its corresponding potential to serve and uplift its community through both secular and religious functions. The church itself is nothing other than ‘the gathered congregation’ in a particular place at a particular time. (Moltman 1999:201) It is following this statement that the validity of merely embracing the typology of a building designed for given liturgy is questioned. This thesis hypothesises that all spaces that foster community meeting and ritual have the potential to become ‘church’, additionally that: in a Christian based spatial confi guration, spaces that facilitate this ‘church’ to occur are also sacred spaces. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Architecture / unrestricted
