Genetic assessment of connectivity in the temperate octocorals Eunicella verrucosa and Alcyonium digitatum in the NE AtlanticHolland, Lyndsey Paula January 2013 (has links)
Elucidating patterns of connectivity for species of conservation concern is crucial in the design of networks of ecologically coherent marine protected areas, and therefore is considered in the design of such a network recently proposed to the UK Government. However, data concerning connectivity are deficient for most invertebrate sessile taxa. Therefore, this study used microsatellite panels developed de novo to assess the population genetic structure and genetic connectivity of two temperate octocorals in the North East Atlantic. Microsatellite panels for both species show evidence of cross-species transferability, and therefore in future may prove to be useful monitoring tools for the target species but also for congenerics further afield in Europe. Eunicella verrucosa (O. Alcyonacea: S.O.Holaxonia: F. Gorgoniidae), a threatened and IUCN red-listed sea fan, was sampled in the northerly extremes of its eastern Atlantic range in southern Portugal, Brittany, the South West UK and western Ireland. In this vicinity, connectivity appears to be defined at regional scales and localised cases of inbreeding and differentiation suggest that the population structure of this species is best described as a metapopulation. Alcyonium digitatum (O. Alcyonacea: S.O. Alcyoniina: F. Alcyoniidae), a soft coral, was sampled in the central portion of its range in Brittany, western Ireland, south west UK and the North Sea. This species exhibited very little population structure and apparent panmixia across the sampled range. However, high levels of heterozygote deficiencies and inbreeding in the majority of populations implies that the genetic structure of some populations of this species may be defined by self-seeding and rarer dispersal events that occur sufficiently often to offset divergence via genetic drift. Coalescent analyses indicate that in both species, migration between regions occurs asymmetrically. The presence of few duplicate genotypes in both datasets implies that sexual reproduction predominates in both species in the sampled area. Eunicella verrucosa is a charismatic species that is often used to promote marine conservation efforts in the UK and A. digitatum is a ubiquitous animal around western European coasts; the two species often occur together and both may suffer the damaging effects of mobile fishing gears. This research represents the first population genetic assessment of both species and the first time microsatellites have been used to assess population structure of octocorals in the North East Atlantic.

The Uncanny and AI: Reimagine Goya's Deaf Man's VillaLiu, Puqiao January 2023 (has links)
In the uncanny feeling I experienced from Goya’s Deaf Man’s Villa, an estranged Deaf Man’s Villa was created but also repressed in my subconscious and thus invisible. How can I use AI to derive this Deaf Man’s Villa hidden in my subconscious? The aim of this project is, with AI Midjourney, to deduce the uncanny feeling I experienced from Goya’s Deaf Man’s Villa to an architectural design. This project provides a way to identify design intent and develop architectural design through research, AI Midjourney, traditional design methods such as drawing and modeling, and other methods such as novel writing. In the project's methodological path, the authors identify that AI has the potential to aid architectural design but cannot replace the human designer's driving role in purposeful architectural design. Ultimately, the authors discuss the role of AI-produced images in architectural design with the semiotic model of Charles Sanders Peirce.

人的全面發展如何可能:佛洛姆教育理論研究 / How is man's full development possible : the research of Erich Fromm's theory of education吳豐成 Unknown Date (has links)
Although Erich Fromm didn’t develop a systematic theory of education, his theories have profound implications for human education. In this dissertation I aim to construct a theory of education by exploiting Fromm’s theory of human nature, theory of alienation, and theory of historical materialism. It emphasizes the power of human nature, and at the same time takes into account the effects of social structure, which have so far been neglected in existing literatures.
According to Fromm, a man’s full development can be achieved only if he has a productive character. The cultivation of a productive character is therefore an essential issue for education theory. Capitalistic mode of production tends to induce in man unproductive marketing, receptive, and other alienated characters, which are further enforced by the ensuing industrial and cybernetic religions. By means of work community, sane consumption, participant democracy, collective art, humanistic religion and education, Fromm wished to build a socialist society which can help its people develop a productive character: For instance, an educator or leader can establish a learning community orientated toward biophilia in his family, school, or company, and help its members develop productive character through his love for them. If such community could pervade the entire society, the growth in people with productive character would gradually transform the overwhelming social values and ideas, and make impacts to the social character and the mode of production.
Fromm’s theory of knowledge based on productive love is akin to Wang young-ming’s philosophy of gewuzhizhi. It is only when man could get rid of irrational passions and associate with the world with selfless love, while possessing a pure, uninfected mind, that he could see the world clearly. He is then able to develop productive love and reason, and other human potentialities. Therefore, learning to become a saint, transcending the delusive reality of the solitary self, are keys to man’s free development. Learning the teachings of great teachers of humankind and humanistic religion with “being orientation”, practicing love without distinction, will help man do away with narcissism and cultivate a productive character.
It is important to recognize that the theory and practice of education should pay more attention to the impacts of social structure and history upon man, and put more emphasis on the effects of moral education and character development. In particular, in both theory and practice, education should never take selfish and/or alienated individuals as usual, but should rather aim to cultivate in them a productive character.

STUDY OF THE "POOR MAN'S NAVIER-STOKES" EQUATION TURBULENCE MODELBible, Stewart Andrew 01 January 2003 (has links)
The work presented here is part of an ongoing effort to develop a highly accurate and numerically efficient turbulence simulation technique. The paper consists of four main parts, viz., the general discussion of the procedure known as Additive Turbulent Decomposition, the derivation of the "synthetic velocity" subgrid-scale model of the high wavenumber turbulent fluctuations necessary for its implementation, the numerical investigation of this model and a priori tests of said models physical validity. Through these investigations we have demonstrated that this procedure, coupled with the use of the "Poor Mans Navier-Stokes" equation subgrid-scale model, has the potential to be a faster, more accurate replacement of currently popular turbulence simulation techniques since: 1. The procedure is consistent with the direct solution of the Navier-Stokes equations if the subgrid-scale model is valid, i.e, the equations to be solved are never filtered, only solutions. 2. Model parameter values are "set" by their relationships to N.S. physics found from their derivation from the N.S. equation and can be calculated "on the fly" with the use of a local high-pass filtering of grid-scale results. 3. Preliminary studies of the PMNS equation model herein have shown it to be a computationally inexpensive and a priori valid model in its ability to reproduce high wavenumber fluctuations seen in an experimental turbulent flow.

The view of masculinity : A thematic analysis of perceptions and lived experiences of the male role among young men aged 20-29 in Sweden.Tu, Leon, Huynh, Michelle January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to conduct a thematic analysis of young men's perceptions and experiences of the male role in contemporary Swedish society. The study relied on seven semi-structured interviews with young adults aged 20 to 29, residing across Sweden. Two underlying themes emerged from the analysis: Toxic masculinity and The changing male role. Within these themes, subthemes were identified, including Male ideals, Macho culture, and Coping with emotional challenges. The results indicated that traditional male norms were perceived as negative and harmful, creating barriers for men to seek help or express themselves emotionally. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the male role has undergone changes and evolved towards a more gender-equal society. This shift opens up greater awareness and flexibility regarding the expectations and norms associated with the male role in today's society.

A Stylistic Analysis of a Young Man's Exhortation, Opus 14, by Gerald Finzi to Words by Thomas HardyRogers, Carl Stanton 08 1900 (has links)
This song cycle consists of ten settings, and has been divided into two parts by the composer. Each part is preceded by a short quotation in Latin which has been inserted by the composer. The two parts of the cycle are evidently meant to typify the division of a human life into the periods of youth and old age. The Latin quotations which divide the cycle into its two parts are taken from the Latin Vulgate version of the Bible, Psalm 89, verse six.

Onde está o pai? O lugar do homem em famílias \"matrifocais\" pobres na cidade de São Paulo / Where is the father? The place of men in poor \"matrifocal\" families in São PauloReis, João Victor de Souza 30 May 2014 (has links)
Acumulam-se responsabilidades familiares pelas mulheres que sob a insígnia de fortes desempenham múltiplas funções, todavia, desgastam-se física e emocionalmente, enquanto os homens encontra-se, de maneira geral, desresponsabilizados / This dissertation investigates the existing production of meanings that there are about the man\'s place in \"matrifocal\" families in São Paulo. The context of the research is based on my experience working as a Socio-Educative Measures Technician in open environment (MSE-MA) in the region of Campo Limpo, in the southern part of São Paulo, between early 2012 and early 2013. This service is designed for young people between 12 and 18 years old in situations of conflict with the law. As a coach I was responsible for monitoring many teenagers under socio-educative measurements - Assisted Freedom and Community Service - which included individual sessions, sessions with the family, and activities involving their social environment. The research theme emerged from this field. From the \"theme-field\" notion coined by Peter K. Spink (2003), where the field is not limited to the spatial domain, but the whole processuality of themes it refers to, a method where the researcher turns their attention to the places and micro relations therein, was used. For that purpose, I selected parts from my work experience from which to conduct case studies and describe scenes in order to establish possible theoretical links that helped me understand the meanings produced by the family members about the place of men within different family dynamics. We noticed how the father figure often appears in this context: little known (life history and personal characteristics), weakened (has little family influence) and absent (physically). In single-parent families with female leadership where a son is present, the latter places himself, and is positioned, to perform the functions considered traditional for the \"man of the house\", such as economic provision, protection and respect, however, the family authority is transferred to the women of the house, especially to the mother. The man\'s place is affected by the woman\'s, who has increasingly more autonomy caused by growing participation in the labor market and, as happened in the cases presented, access to income transfer programs such as Bolsa Família (a Brazilian welfare program). Family responsibilities are accumulated by women who, fitting under the banner of \"strong\", develop multiple roles. However they become physically and emotionally worn out, while men are, in general, not held accountable
