Gender, feminism and talk on British television, 1970-1990

Kay, Jilly January 2015 (has links)
This thesis uncovers and analyses the relationship between forms of talk on British television between 1970-1990, and the uneven transformations in gender politics that occurred in this period, which encompasses both the second wave feminist movement and the rise of neoliberal politics. It presents five historical case studies of talk-based television programmes from across this time period: No Man’s Land (Associated Television/ITV, 1973), Good Afternoon! (Thames Television/ITV, 1971-1984), Pictures of Women: Sexuality (Channel 4, 1984), Watch the Woman (Channel 4, 1985), and Question Time (BBC One, 1979-present). These case studies offer a deliberate selection of television texts that differ according to their institutional contexts; their position in the schedules; their status in existing broadcasting histories; their discursive arrangements; and their modes of address. The thesis seeks to consider how the communicative ethos of television talk has been gendered in three key ways: at the level of production - in the sense of when, how, and why television spaces have been opened up for gendered forms of talk in relationship to wider shifts in gender politics; at the level of the text - in terms of how the discursive arrangements of talk-based programmes have worked to include, exclude, legitimise or disavow women’s voices; and at the level of critical reception - in the sense of how television talk has been evaluated in profoundly gendered terms. The thesis is methodologically innovative because it theorises gendered forms of television talk in relationship to histories of television production, as well as to broader political, cultural and gender histories. It carries out important empirical ‘recovery work’ of hidden women’s television histories through the presentation of original archival research. It also presents theoretical work, which re-evaluates the distinctive communicative ethos of television – or its “sociability” in light of feminist theories of language, gender and power. Moreover, it sheds some historical light on why the institutional parameters of television still delimit the available spaces for women's speech.

A construção duplicada em \"O homem duplicado\" / Double construction in \"The Double\"

Alves, Francisco das Chagas Jacinto 05 August 2010 (has links)
This dissertation researches the duplicity in The Double, by José Saramago. This book was published in Brazil in 2002 and focuses on the globalized world identity, based on the story of the meeting between Tertuliano Máximo Afonso, a History teacher, and his look-alike, António Claro, a supporting actor. Analyzing parts of the novel, the way this duplicity theme is observed to approach the division of the contemporary man\'s identity. This dissertation is based on theoreticians who focus on duplicity, such as Carl F. Keppler and Nicole Bravo, and identity, Stuart Hall. The work of Marshall Berman on \"modernization dialectics is another reference. Sigmund Freud also provides important contributions from the point of view of the human psyche. Using such approach, it was possible to better understand fiction mechanisms supporting criticism by Saramago, trying to understand the game between the inner and outer reality in fiction and society. That is why this paper is divided in five parts. The first part presents the purpose of this dissertation and theoretical foundation. The second part focuses on the analysis of the homogeneous duplicity in this novel. Then, an investigation about the heterogeneous duplicity. The other two parts focuses on contemporary identity division. One focuses on the construction of the main conflict in this novel, and the other focuses on the study of ambiguities along the story, in order to make evident the structure of the novel as post modernity feature.

It is an exploratory-descriptive research accomplished in the health units of Distrito Sanitário III, in João Pessoa PB. It aimed at perceiving the knowledge of Health Communitarian Agents about reproductive rights and man s participation in the practice of these rights as well as identifying man s empowerment strategies while practicing the reproductive rights. Data were collected by means of interview fulfilled with 25 agents who make up the health family team of the mentioned study place, in the period from June to August 2012. For the accomplishment of the research the Resolution rules n° 196/96 of the Health National Council were observed in reference to research involving human beings and the Resolution n° 311/2007 of the Federal Council of Nursing by acquiring assent by the Research Ethics Committee of the Health Science Center of the Federal University of Paraíba, under the n° 0309/12 and CAEE: 02190312.7.0000.5188. Data were analyzed through Bardin´s content analysis technique. Results realized that there are deficits regarding the health communitarian agents´ understanding on reproductive rights and man s participation in actions involving reproductive health. Nevertheless, a real change in man s role about family planning and the follow-up of the pregnancy-puerperal cycle was revealed. Taking these findings into account, the agents pointed out the following aspects as possible strategies for man s empowerment in reproductive health promotion: domiciliary visit through dialogue committed with awareness for health care, major practice of Basic Attention while promoting the National Policy of Integral Attention to Man s Health as well as the construction of a methodology that favors the insertion of male population based on an inclusive policy. Therefore, it can be concluded that once cultural barrier is overcome, pertaining to discussion about the meaning of being male and female and reproductive health matters, man will be able to recognize himself as subject of reproductive rights acting as co-responsible in the actions of the couple s reproductive life.

O lugar do homem em famílias \"matrifocais\" pobres na cidade de São Paulo / Where is the father? The place of men in poor \"matrifocal\" families in São Paulo

João Victor de Souza Reis 30 May 2014 (has links)
Acumulam-se responsabilidades familiares pelas mulheres que sob a insígnia de fortes desempenham múltiplas funções, todavia, desgastam-se física e emocionalmente, enquanto os homens encontra-se, de maneira geral, desresponsabilizados / This dissertation investigates the existing production of meanings that there are about the man\'s place in \"matrifocal\" families in São Paulo. The context of the research is based on my experience working as a Socio-Educative Measures Technician in open environment (MSE-MA) in the region of Campo Limpo, in the southern part of São Paulo, between early 2012 and early 2013. This service is designed for young people between 12 and 18 years old in situations of conflict with the law. As a coach I was responsible for monitoring many teenagers under socio-educative measurements - Assisted Freedom and Community Service - which included individual sessions, sessions with the family, and activities involving their social environment. The research theme emerged from this field. From the \"theme-field\" notion coined by Peter K. Spink (2003), where the field is not limited to the spatial domain, but the whole processuality of themes it refers to, a method where the researcher turns their attention to the places and micro relations therein, was used. For that purpose, I selected parts from my work experience from which to conduct case studies and describe scenes in order to establish possible theoretical links that helped me understand the meanings produced by the family members about the place of men within different family dynamics. We noticed how the father figure often appears in this context: little known (life history and personal characteristics), weakened (has little family influence) and absent (physically). In single-parent families with female leadership where a son is present, the latter places himself, and is positioned, to perform the functions considered traditional for the \"man of the house\", such as economic provision, protection and respect, however, the family authority is transferred to the women of the house, especially to the mother. The man\'s place is affected by the woman\'s, who has increasingly more autonomy caused by growing participation in the labor market and, as happened in the cases presented, access to income transfer programs such as Bolsa Família (a Brazilian welfare program). Family responsibilities are accumulated by women who, fitting under the banner of \"strong\", develop multiple roles. However they become physically and emotionally worn out, while men are, in general, not held accountable

Užívání médií mužskými příslušníky kultury fitness / The way of using media by the male members interested in fitness culture

Martinková, Michaela January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the interaction of male members of the fitness culture with content referring to this topic on social media. The diploma thesis examines the connections between the monitored content, the desire to build masculinity, the satisfaction of men with their own body, or the idea of an ideal male body. The aim of this thesis is to answer the questions of how men interpret media content, which suppose to inspire the creation of healthy lifestyle habits, and whether, or how, this content contributes to their approach to the fitness culture. Research shows that men attribute a significant influence to social media on their concept of fitness as a lifestyle. These participants talk about the strengths and weaknesses of the content of fitspiration, which affect the perception of their own body and mental well-being. Although, social media contributions motivate them to improve themselves and achieve better results, images of masculinity on social media force them to focus on the aesthetics of the body, the amount of muscles rather than on the quality of life, health and other benefits from the regular physical activity.

Lajara Garcia, Mercè Montserrat 09 June 2008 (has links)
The human genome was first completed in 2003 and since then there has been a surge of discoveries and applications related to that historic and scientific deed. Different ethical issues have arisen in parallel posing the question of how man's image can be affected by the immense quantity of ramifications that the finding itself possesses. In this study we have focused on the impact of the human genome's applications from the perspective of Hans Jonas' thinking. His ethical approach will allow us to assess accurately the problems associated with genetic manipulation which occur in some fields of bioethics. This study aims to systematize points of view so as to make a future practical application less complex. The study of the human genome and its scientific, medical and social practices have been and will continue to be a great contribution to mankind. Nonetheless, caution and good sense should prevail when applying its results in order to protect those members of society who are more vulnerable. The concept of human being in its biological, cultural and spiritual could be negatively affected by genetic technology so this research highlights human uniqueness within different spheres while offering ethical guidance on how to preserve human dignity in genetic interventions. This study states both that science and humanities are not two worlds apart and that an ongoing dialogue within different disciplines is very much needed. It makes no sense to talk about bioethics without opening first an honest interdisciplinary dialogueThe main conclusions of this study point at an issue which is both mine and Jona's top priorities: Will genetic engineering eventually have a negative impact on the essence of human's core values?

Human Body Presence Detection in Water Environments Using Pulse Coherent Radar / Detektering av människokroppens närvaro i vattenmiljöer med hjälp av koherentpulsradar

Moths, Jens, Frotan, Frotan January 2022 (has links)
New technology in radar opens up new possibilities for cheap and easily integrated human body presence detection. In this work, we aim to make a proof of concept that replaces the "dead man’s grip" on an electric surfboard with a more convenient wireless system based on micro radars. To answer the research questions identified, an artifact was created. To guide the research process and ensure that rigorous methods are used for constructing and evaluating the artifact, this thesis employs the research paradigm Design Science Research. The result was that the radar signal is completely degraded without a radome when the radar is wet. With a radome, the signal strength is a third wet compared to dry. Therefore, a radome is required to protect the radar and its function from the elements. The need for blockage detection was also defined. Observing how the direct leakage signal deviates from its normal state can determine whether the sensor is being blocked. Several algorithms were developed and tuned to prove the concept. Coverage and detection speed was tested and optimized. Overall, the potential of micro radars to replace a dead man’s grip on a surfboard is very promising.

"Charity Never Faileth": Philanthropy in the Short Fiction of Herman Melville

Goldfarb, Nancy D. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation analyzes the critique of charity and philanthropy implicit in Melville’s short fiction written for periodicals between 1853 and 1856. Melville utilized narrative and tone to conceal his opposition to prevailing ideologies and manipulated narrative structures to make the reader complicit in the problematic assumptions of a market economy. Integrating close readings with critical theory, I establish that Melville was challenging the new rhetoric of philanthropy that created a moral identity for wealthy men in industrial capitalist society. Through his short fiction, Melville exposed self-serving conduct and rationalizations when they masqueraded as civic-minded responses to the needs of the community. Melville was joining a public conversation about philanthropy and civic leadership in an American society that, in its pursuit of private wealth, he believed was losing touch with the democratic and civic ideals on which the nation had been founded. Melville’s objection was not with charitable giving; rather, he objected to its use as a diversion from honest reflection on one’s responsibilities to others.
