Building a framework for improving data quality in engineering asset management

Asset managers recognise that high-quality engineering data is the key enabler in gaining control of engineering assets. Although they consider accurate, timely and relevant data as critical to the quality of their asset management (AM) decisions, evidence of large variations in data quality (DQ) associated with AM abounds. Therefore, the question arises as to what factors influence DQ in engineering AM. Accordingly, the main goal of this research is to investigate DQ issues associated with AM, and to develop an AM specific DQ framework of factors affecting DQ in AM. The framework is aimed at providing structured guidance for AM organisations to understand, identify and mitigate their DQ problems in a systematic way, and help them create an information orientation to achieve a greater AM performance.

New Communication Technologies, Organizational Culture, and the Creation of Innovative Learning Environments

Today's organizations face an economic climate that is globalizing, increasing customer demands for products and services that meet their unique needs and the fast pace of technological developments. Organizations require the effective use of new communication technologies as a means of sharing information and expanding capacity for innovation. The main question for this research is: When new communication technologies are introduced into organizations, how do they work together with existing cultural assumptions to produce an innovative, learning environment within the organization? The research design involves conducting moderately structured interviews with organizational leaders in four diverse organizations: Ingram Book Company, Service Merchandise Company, Inc., Life Way Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Dollar General Corporation. Results include an introduction to each company, a report on their implemented new communication technologies and innovative learning environment, and a description of their core corporate culture.

Employee adoption of information security measures in the manufacturing sector using extended TAM under a quantitative study

<p> Organizations spend billions of dollars on information and data security, and most of this expenditure is directed externally; however, there is ample evidence in the literature that employees account for most security breaches. For information security (IS) measures to work, employees need to adopt the organization&rsquo;s information system security measures. To understand employees&rsquo; adoption of security systems in the manufacturing industry in the US, this empirical study tested the extended Technology Acceptance model and Theory of Planned behavior in relation to employees&rsquo; perceptions of the IS measures usefulness, ease of use, and subjective norms and how these perceptions predicted their intention to use the security measures. Additionally, under investigation was whether age and employees&rsquo; perception of managerial support moderated the aforementioned perceptions to affect employees&rsquo; intention to use the security measures. Results of a standard multiple regression and a hierarchical regression indicated that the TAM and the TBP explained variances in the DV; however, contrary to extant literature, employees&rsquo; perceived usefulness of IS measures did not statistically significantly predict their intention to use IS measures. Implications of these findings are discussed, as well as recommendations for future research.</p>

The information technology artefacts are deployed to enable and support processes and activities for improved services, and to give the organisation leverage on the competitive advantage. The deployment of the information technology artefacts to enable, facilitate and support services is done through engineering approaches and methods, such as the enterprise architecture. Many organisations have shown interest, and have deployed the enterprise architecture in the recent years. Even though the enterprise architecture has become an increasingly mature field of work, yet many organisations still struggle with the development and implementation. What and where the challenges are in the deployment of enterprise architecture continue to be a debate. This study adopted two organisations as case studies. The organisations were used to understand the deployment of enterprise architecture through a third eye, using the lens of the structuration theory and also to understand the different non-technical challenges that exists within the deployment of the enterprise architecture in organisations

At the end of the study on the role of competitive intelligence on information systems innovation the following was achieved. It was better understood that while competitive intelligence is overemphasized as revolutionary, customer focused information systems products and services still remain challenging. It was also understood that not all organisations that deploy competitive intelligence produce more innovative methods. A lack of knowledge- sharing and limitations within the organisational culture were found to be important factors for the deployment of competitive intelligence products and services in the organisations. In order to achieve this, it was necessary to understand what risk is and also what risk management was. It was also necessary to understand the role information systems played in the deployment of risk management systems. The data gathered from the interview was analysed with structuration theory. Structuration theory enabled the researcher to have a clearer view of the problems in the organisations as it borders around risks. The analyses lead to some findings. Structuration theory played the role of a lens through which the problem was viewed. The findings were then used to develop a framework. It was intended that after this study the framework developed will be used for risk management in organisations. It was also intended that adoption of this framework for use in organisations will reduce the amount of resources wasted on management of risks which could have been spent on other things that are much more useful to the organisations.
