Runaway indentured servants in Maryland, 1745-1760

Stout, Lida A. January 1981 (has links)
Many studies of indentured servitude in the eighteenth century have tended to characterize the labor system as fairly rigid. An examination of runaway indentured servant advertisements in the Maryland Gazette reveals several factors prompting a different conclusion. A comparison of runaway servants to runaway slaves demonstrates certain similarities and differences between these two groups and their respective labor systems. Much of the data obtained from the runaway servant ads and the above comparison suggest that indentured servitude was more flexible than has often been thought. / M.A.

A presence of the past: a maritime museum and visitor center in historic Annapolis

Concepcion, Carlos Enrique January 1987 (has links)
The place where the sea and the sky meet is a definition unknown on any map. Only the fisherman and his boat experience this unity. The mast as the symbol of the tree was the reminder of the land Just as the soil was the sign of man's position, his distance from land. The enormous material interaction between the flat surface and the column determined the construction of the boat. The creation of a boat is a challenge to the sea, but the dream of an everlasting existance is an act taken against all the elements. Sverre Fehn / M. Arch.

Fysikattityder hos gymnasieelever? : Trender bland intresse för fysik och fysikattityder bland svenska gymnasieelever / Physics Attitudes of upper secondary schools students? : Trends among interest in physics and physics attitudes among Swedish upper secondary schools students

Ahlholm, Martin January 2013 (has links)
Empirical research has shown that there are clear links between the interests, attitudes, and studentsuccess. The aim of the survey, which is the foundation of this report, was to measure how theinterest in physics and attitudes towards physics and physics education differs between the differentyears in upper secondary school. Maryland Physics Expectations (MPEX) Survey has been used tomeasure the attitudes. The questionnaire was answered by 605 respondents from technology andnatural science program from two upper secondary schools in central Sweden. Interest in physics islow on the investigated schools and it tends to become lower through the ages. Overall, there aremore unfavorable responses of the different attitude dimensions in third grade than in first grade. Concept is the dimension that has the most unfavorable response in both the second and third grade. In order to increase the conceptual understanding of upper secondary school students, shouldconceptual understanding be offered a greater part of the teaching. Examining conceptualunderstanding in homework assignments and tests are also preferable.

Fugitive slave advertisements and the rebelliousness of enslaved people in Georgia and Maryland, 1790-1810

Wallace, Shaun January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is a systematic investigation of fugitive slave advertisements aiming to understand the nature of fugitives’ rebelliousness in Georgia and Maryland between 1790 and 1810. Hitherto, historical inquiry pertaining to slave fugitivity has focused on other states and other times. This study provides a close reading of 5,567 advertisements pertaining to runaway slaves and analyses extracted data pertaining to the prosopography of 1,832 fugitives and their fugitivity. Its main research questions focus on advertisements as manifest records of rebellion. Who were the fugitives? What do the fugitive slave advertisements reveal about enslaved people’s contestation of slaveholders’ authority? The principal findings are as follows. First, the typography and iconography of fugitive slave advertisements were expressly intended to undermine the individualism and agency of enslaved people. Second, with regard to Georgia and Maryland, while there were spikes between 1796 and 1798 and 1800 and 1801, fugitivity was a daily occurrence, and thus a normative act of rebellion distinct from insurrection. Third, quantitative analysis indicated fugitives were typically young males, in their twenties, likely to escape at any time of the year; Georgia fugitives were more likely to escape in groups. Fourth, qualitative analysis of advertisers’ descriptions of fugitives revealed evidence of challenges to their authority. Depictions of fugitives’ character and remarks or notes on their behaviour constitute evidence of observed characteristics. From the advertisers’ perspective slaves were at their most dangerous when they could read and write or when they were skilled in deception. The “artful” fugitive in particular possessed many skills, sometimes including literacy, which could be used to defy the power that kept him or her in subjection. Fifth, further investigation established clear linkages between literacy and fugitives’ rebelliousness. Qualitative studies to date speak of slave literacy’s theoretical liberating and empowering effects but do not provide tangible accounts of who the literate slaves were or consider literacy as a factor in rebelliousness. The dissertation identified 36 literate slaves in Maryland and 9 in Georgia, and statistical analysis suggested 3.6 percent of US fugitive slaves were literate. Finally, it was evident that literacy was part of a larger contest to circumvent slaveholder authority and attain self-empowerment. Fugitivity itself was the outcome of a history of contestation that might be hidden from history were it not for the advertisements themselves.

The influence of perch tree distribution and abundance on bald eagle distribution on the northern Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

Chandler, Sheri Kay 12 September 2009 (has links)
Forested shoreline is important perching habitat for bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Bald eagles hunt, feed and loaf on shoreline perches. I measured trees suitable for bald eagle perches along the northern Chesapeake Bay during 1990-1991 to determine the influence of shoreline perch tree availability on bald eagle distribution. The shoreline was divided into 250 x 50 m segments. A segment was considered used if at least 1 eagle had perched on it during 1985-1992. I determined the number of suitable shoreline perch trees, percent forest cover, and distance from the water to the nearest suitable perch tree for each segment. Segments along the Chesapeake Bay had an average of 1 suitable perch tree per 10 m of shoreline. Shoreline segments used by eagles had more suitable perch trees (P = 0.0008) and a larger percent of forest cover (P = 0.0008). Suitable trees on segments with eagle use were closer to water than suitable trees on segments without eagle use (P = 0.0087). The differences in segments with and without eagle use appear to be largely due to the lack of trees in marshes which were used only seldomly. Marsh had few suitable perch trees, less forest cover and a greater mean distance from water to the nearest suitable perch tree than the other land types (P < 0.0001). These factors are unfavorable for foraging eagles and most marsh segments (66.7%) were unused, probably for this reason. The number of suitable perch trees and the percent of forest cover were lower on developed areas than undeveloped, forested areas (P < 0.01 for both tests). Also the distance from water to the nearest suitable perch tree was greater on developed land than forested land (P < 0.01). Thus, development appears to decrease the availability of suitable shoreline perch trees when compared to forested areas. Logistic regression models were created to predict the probability of eagle use, given the conditions at the time of this study. Varying values of development density, percent forest cover, number of suitable perch trees and distance from water to the nearest suitable tree were inputs used in these models to create curves to predict eagle use under different conditions. These curves indicated that, for a given development density, the probability of eagle use increased as the number of suitable perch trees or percent forest cover on the segment increased. Also, for a given development density, the probably of eagle use increases as the distance to water decreases. / Master of Science

Disposition of forty mentally retarded patients presented by the Pre-parole Service to the Social Service Planning Staff from March through October 1959, Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, Maryland

Unknown Date (has links)
"The purpose of this study was to survey the cases of forty mentally retarded patients who have been presented by the Pre-parole Service to the Social Service Planning Staff of the Rosewood State Training School, Owings Mills, Maryland, from March through October 1959, in order to describe the differences--if any--on 18 selected items between the 28 retarded patients approved and the 12 disapproved for eventual return to the community. It was anticipated that such an analysis might more clearly define the term 'readiness for parole'"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "June, 1960." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Social Work." / Advisor: Merle M.
