An Online Statistics Course From Faculty and Students' Perspectives: A Case Study

Best, Ruth 01 January 2016 (has links)
Faculty at a private college in the northeastern United States found students lacked prerequisite mathematical skills and were unable to transfer quantitative reasoning skills to upper level business courses. Guided by Mezirow's transformative learning theory and Knowles' approach to self-directed learning, this study examined how undergraduate students learn statistics online. The purpose of this qualitative embedded case study was to examine faculty and students' perspectives about the online statistics course design and delivery while exploring possible barriers to students' learning. Data collection occurred by review of course documents and the learning management system. Archival data generated questions for semistructured interviews with 2 faculty and 4 students. Thematic analysis of data followed the inductive and interpretive approach to identify categories and 5 themes: measuring and assessing student learning, challenges learning statistics online, student readiness and preparation, online faculty roles, and recommendations for improving online statistics courses. Findings identified technical and affective barriers to learning statistics online and the need to create supportive learning environments fostering differentiated instruction, mastery learning, and complying with the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education. The resulting project was 5 professional development webinars designed to assist faculty creating student-centered online statistics courses focused on conceptual understanding. This study contributes to positive social change through implementation of course design leading to student access and online content mastery.

Rozvíjení matematických znalostí a dovedností ve volnočasových aktivitách / Mathematical knowledge and skills development in leisure time activities

Bartlová, Helena January 2018 (has links)
The thesis is aimed on the mathematical knowledge and skills development in leisure time activities. The theoretical part of the thesis is dedicated to leisure time, pedagogy of leisure time, out-of-school education - its content, functions and requirements for realization of out-of-school education. This part of the thesis is also dedicated to the motivation and its use in leisure time activities and development of mathematical knowledge in leisure activities. Based on this information and on my own experience, I worked out and introduced the prin- ciples for preparing leisure time activities developing mathematical knowledge and skills. Following is a compilation of leisure time activities that develop knowledge and skills in geometry, arithmetic, algebra, logical thinking, or geometric imagination. The compilation contains activities suitable for relaxing, recreational and hobby activities. The practical part includes a case study of the Textile Applications activity, which deals with consolidation and development of knowledge in axial symmetry within the leisure time sewing ring. The case study verified if participants in this activity developed knowledge in axial symmetry, if the activity respects the requirements for out-of-school education and if it improves belief in the applicability of...

Fourie, Maria Elizabeth 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine whether learners in Grade R mastered the necessary math skills through structured play that could serve as a basis for further mathematics training. In the literature various math concepts were studied in depth. The main focus was on the transfer of math concepts to young learners. The literature study further focussed on the purpose, values, and types of play, development of play and play in the modern era. An empirical study using random sampling was done using 103 Grade R learners from six different schools who were willing to participate in the study. The study was done using the positivism quantitative research methodology. Questionnaires were used to determine the mastery of mathematical skills by Grade R learners. Structured play was used as a tool to collect the research material. The results were obtained by processing the questionnaires statistically. Questionnaires were also completed by the teachers to confirm their background knowledge, teaching methods as well as to determine the teachers‟ own feelings towards and their knowledge of mathematics. The research results confirm that the majority of Grade R learners have obtained a good math foundation. The study also confirmed that it is important that young children need to play to learn new skills and must have the opportunity to practise the new skills. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed.
