Pre-school children often spend the most part of the day at a pre-primary school or a day care centre. Pre-school children sometimes make the first statement of sexual abuse to a pre-school teacher. Due to this phenomenon it is important that pre-school personnel are knowledgeable about basic information in connection with sexual abuse of the pre-school child and the reporting of the abuse. A positive attitude toward the protection of children against sexual abuse and the willingness to get involved in the reporting of sexual abuse or the suspicion there of, will guarantee that the best interest of the pre-school child is served. Die purpose of the research was to ascertain the knowledge and attitude of pre-school personnel toward sexual abuse of pre-school children and the reporting there of, to determine whether pre-school personnel act in the best interest of pre-school children. The research followed a quantitative approach. 13 Pre-primary schools took part in the research and 70 pre-school personnel completed the questionnaires. The questionnaires were completed in the participants own time. The findings clearly showed that pre-school personnel who were involved in the research did not have sufficient knowledge, nor a desirable attitude toward sexual abuse of the pre-school child and the reporting thereof. This research is directed at mothers of toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district. The objective of the study is to determine whether mothers with toddlers display a need for parental guidance. Data have been collected and a theoretical framework has been constructed by means of a literature study and communication with experts. An empirical study has been conducted by involving forty-five mothers (respondents) of toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district. Scientific and technological knowledge have been acquired by means of applied research. A questionnaire, designed by the researcher, was used to collect data. The following research question was posed: Does a need for parental guidance exist amongst mothers with toddlers in the Frankfort magisterial district? The conclusions and recommendations of the study focus on achieving the objectives and aims. Once the data had been analysed and processed, it became very clear that a need for formal parental guidance does exist amongst mothers in the Frankfort magisterial district. Mothers have indicated a need for additional knowledge and information regarding the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of their toddlers in order to selfpromote aspects of the development of toddlers. Die benutting van groepwerk vir die stimulering van die gedepriveerde kleuter se emosionele ontwikkeling : 'n gestaltspelterapiebenadering (Afrikaans)

The research dealt with the influence that gestalt group therapy may have on the emotional development of deprived toddlers. The research consisted of a literature study and an empirical study. The literature study contains information on groupwork and emotional development of the toddler. The empirical research was conducted by involving six toddlers in a group. They were identified by means of purposive sampling. A pre-test was done with each child to determine their emotional development. After six group sessions of 30 minutes each, a post-test (using the same test as for the pre-test) was done with each child. The pre-test and post-test results were compared with each other. The content of each session were examined and also included in the findings. Empirical data revealed that gestalt group therapy can stimulate the emotional development of deprived toddlers. The conclusion can thus be made that gestalt group therapy can stimulate the emotional development of deprived toddlers. As a result of this study, conclusions and recommendations for future research were formulated. AFRIKAANS : Die ondersoek was daarop gerig om te bepaal of die benutting van gestaltgroepspelterapie die emosionele ontwikkeling van die gedepriveerde kleuter kan stimuleer. Die ondersoek het bestaan uit 'n literatuurstudie sowel as empiriese navorsing. Die literatuurstudie is gedoen ten opsigte van groepwerk en die kleuter se emosionele ontwikDie empiriese deel van die ondersoek is uitgevoer deur ses kleuters deur middel van doelgerigte steekproeftrekking by die groep in te sluit. 'n Voortoets om die emosionele ontwikkeling van die kleuters te bepaal, is gedoen. Daarna is ses gestaltgroepwerksessies van 30 minute elk uitgevoer. Dieselfde toets as wat vir die voortoets benut is, is weer aan die kleuters gegee en die resultate is met mekaar vergelyk. Die inligting uit die sessies is ook genoteer en benut. Uit die empiriese gegewens het dit geblyk dat daar wel emosionele ontwikkeling by die kleuters plaasgevind het. Die gevolgtrekking kan dus gemaak word dat gestaltgroepspelterapie benut kan word om gedepriveerde kleuters se emosionele ontwikkeling te stimuleer. Gevolgtrekkings en aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing is na aanleiding van die studie geformuleer. keling. Sexual abuse of children is a reality that occurs in communities on a daily basis. In a specific informal settlement in Buffalo City, where the researcher has previously worked as social worker, statistics showed that children in their early childhood are the most vulnerable to sexual abuse. The parents' socio-economic circumstances lead to inadequate protection and security for their minor children, making them vulnerable to sexual abuse. Research shows that each community has specific risk and protection factors in respect of sexual abuse. The aim of this study was to explore and describe through a descriptive, qualitative design the risk factors that contribute to sexual abuse of children in a particular informal settlement in Buffalo City. The research question for the study reads as follows: What are the risk factors that contribute to sexual abuse of children in a particular informal settlement in Buffalo City? Sixteen participants were interviewed by means of semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Purposeful, non-probability sampling was used to select parents or caregivers of children who were sexually abused as well as community leaders in the community to participate in the interviewing. Detailed reflections were ob tained from participants of their perceptions of contributing risk factors that left the children vulnerable. These interviews were conducted with the use of an interview schedule that was compiled in accordance with a literature study and thereafter tested. The methods that were use to capture data were interviewing, observations, reflections and fieldnotes. The interviews were transcribed for the purposes of data analysis and were analysed according to the steps of Creswell (2009). The ecological system perspective has served as the theoretical framework for this study, and five themes were identified in this context. These themes were divided into sub-themes and categories, and were discussed with relevant narratives. The narratives were obtained from the transcripts. Finally, the findings were checked and verified against existing literature. The results can be summarised as follows: i. According to the findings, risk factors that contribute to the preschool child as an individual being vulnerable to sexual abuse is leaving the child alone at home without adequate supervision or the inability of parents or caregivers to provide adequately for the child’s basic needs. ii. Inadequate parenting was identified as a contributing risk factor on micro level. iii. Apathy among neighbours due to the absence of ubuntu was a contributing risk factor on meso level. iv. Inadequate programmes by social service organisations to preschool children were contributing risk factors on the eco systemic level. v. Graad R verwys volgens die nuutste Afrikaanse beleidsdokumente na die voorskoolse opleiding wat tans in die Suid-Afrikaanse skoolstelsel ingefaseer word, alhoewel die Departement van Basiese Onderwys beoog dat alle leerders eers in 2019 toegang sal hê tot formele graad R-programme. Uitdagings vir onderrig in vroeë kinderontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika is onder meer ʼn tekort aan gekwalifiseerde onderwysers, asook leer- en ondersteuningsmateriaal van ʼn hoë gehalte. Die Kurrikulum- en Assesseringsbeleidsverklaring (KABV) vir graad R bestaan uit drie vakke: Huistaal, Wiskunde en Lewensvaardighede. Lewensvaardighede bestaan uit vier studie-areas, naamlik Aanvangskennis, Skeppende kunste, Liggaamsopvoeding, asook Persoonlike en Sosiale Welsyn. Slegs dertig minute per week word as deel van Skeppende kunste toegestaan aan formele musiekonderrig. Wanneer musiek in die dagprogram met ander aspekte van graad R-onderrig en -leer integreer word, word die holistiese ontwikkeling van die leerder bevorder. Graad R-onderwysers het egter selde in musiek gespesialiseer en is onseker oor die implementering daarvan in hul onderrigprogramme. Uitvoerbare moontlikhede word in hierdie proefskrif ondersoek om musiek in die graad R-dagprogram te integreer ten einde ʼn bydrae te lewer tot die sosiale, fisiese, emosionele, intellektuele en geestelike ontwikkeling van graad R-leerders. Die hoofnavorsingsvraag wat hieruit ontstaan, is watter teoretiese raamwerk verduidelik hoe musiek in graad R geïntegreer kan word. Die navorsingsbenadering wat gevolg is om hierdie vraag te ondersoek, is ʼn kwalitatiewe, veelvoudige gevallestudie vanuit ʼn interpretatiewe perspektief. Aanvanklik is ʼn literatuurstudie gedoen om huidige tendense ten opsigte van die integrasie van musiek in graad R te beskryf. Daarna is die onderrig en leer in vyf multikulturele graad R-klasse in die Potchefstroom-omgewing waargeneem met die doel om die maniere waarop musiek in die praktyk geïntegreer word, in te samel. Die data is toe met behulp van Atlas.ti 7.1.6 georganiseer en gekategoriseer, waarna ʼn oorkruis gevalle-analise gedoen is. Die bevindinge is geverifieer deur langtermyn-waarneming en deelnemer-kontrole. ʼn Teoretiese raamwerk is ontwikkel deur die ses temas wat uit die data-analise gegenereer is in verband te bring met ʼn geïntegreerde literatuuroorsig. Hierdie aspekte vir die integrasie van musiek in graad R waardeur onderrig en leer kan plaasvind, is geïdentifiseer as oor musiek, uit musiek, op musiek, met musiek, in musiek en deur musiek. In die raamwerk word elke aspek van integrasie verbind met aktiwiteite wat gebaseer is op die leerbeginsels vir graad R, naamlik spel, ontdekking en praktiese ervarings, ten einde die ontwikkeling van die graad R-leerder te bevorder. Alhoewel die bevindinge spesifiek is tot die Potchefstroom-omgewing, hou die teoretiese raamwerk verskeie moontlikhede in vir nasionale en internasionale toepassing in voorskoolse onderrig.
