Modelling of 3D anisotropic turbulent flow in compound channels

Vyas, Keyur January 2007 (has links)
The present research focuses on the development and computer implementation of a novel threedimensional, anisotropic turbulence model not only capable of handling complex geometries but also the turbulence driven secondary currents. The model equations comprise advanced algebraic Reynolds stress models in conjunction with Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In order to tackle the complex geometry of compound meandering channels, the body-fitted orthogonal coordinate system is used. The finite volume method with collocated arrangement of variables is used for discretization of the governing equations. Pressurevelocity coupling is achieved by the standard iterative SIMPLE algorithm. A central differencing scheme and upwind differencing scheme are implemented for approximation of diffusive and convective fluxes on the control volume faces respectively. A set of algebraic equations, derived after discretization, are solved with help of Stones implicit matrix solver. The model is validated against standard benchmarks on simple and compound straight channels. For the case of compound meandering channels with varying sinuosity and floodplain height, the model results are compared with the published experimental data. It is found that the present method is able to predict the mean velocity distribution, pressure and secondary flow circulations with reasonably good accuracy. In terms of engineering applications, the model is also tested to understand the importance of turbulence driven secondary currents in slightly curved channel. The development of this unique model has opened many avenues of future research such as flood risk management, the effects of trees near the bank on the flow mechanisms and prediction of pollutant transport.

A study of sediment transport in two-stage meandering channel

Chan, Tuck Leong January 2003 (has links)
An investigation of the flow characteristics and sediment transport processes has been carried out in a two-stage meandering channel. Three phases of experiments have been conducted with various floodplain roughnesses. The dimensions of the flume are 13m long and 2.4m wide with a fixed valley slope of 11500. The meandering main channel has a sinuosity of 1.384 with top width of 0.4m. In each phase of the experiment, hydraulic data pertaining to stage-discharge, bed topography and sediment transport rate were measured at various overbank flow depths. Several flow depths were chosen to measure the three-dimensional velocities by means of Laser Doppler Anemometer and the morphological bedforms were recorded using the Photogrammetric technique. The boundary shear stresses were also measured by means of a Preston Tube and Vane Indicator. The experimental results showed that the presence of the energy losses due to momentum exchange and turbulence, bedforms roughness and floodplain roughness induced additional flow resistance to the main channel flow, particularly for shallow overbank flows. The combination of these losses affected a significant reduction in velocity and boundary shear stress in the main channel which, subsequently led to the reduction of sediment discharge at low relative depth for most tested cases. The reduction was more pronounced when the floodplain roughness increased. The examination of the three-dimensional velocity indicated that the formation of bedforms in the main channel is significantly affected by the flow structures, especially the secondary flow. A new method for predicting velocity and sediment transport rate has been introduced based on the two-dimensional equation (Spooner's) coupled with the self-calibrated empirical transport formula. The proposed method gave accurate prediction for depthaveraged velocity and sediment transport rate for two-stage meandering channel.

Local investigations of gas-liquid mass transfer around Taylor bubbles flowing in straight and meandering millimetric channels using a colorimetric method / Etudes locales par colorimétrie du transfert de matière gaz-liquide autour de bulles de Taylor en écoulement dans des canaux millimétriques droits et ondulés

Yang, Lixia 24 March 2017 (has links)
Compact Heat-EXchanger reactors (HEX) are an important part of process intensification technology. However, most of the existed research dealing with such type of equipment has been focused on the application of one-phase reactive flows. For gas-liquid reactions, few investigations have been out carried. This thesis aims at locally studying gas-liquid mass transfer around Taylor bubbles flowing in straight and meandering millimetric channels using a colorimetric method; this is a preliminary step essential before implementing two-phase reactive systems. Firstly, the occurrence of a possible enhancement of the gas-liquid mass transfer by the chemical reaction involved was investigated. Secondly, the gas-liquid mass transfer occurring in Taylor flows right after the bubble formation stage in a microreactor was studied. Thirdly, the gas-liquid hydrodynamics were characterized and the effects of bends on the mass transfer mechanism were locally investigated in a millimetric meandering channel. At last, a rigorous comparison could be made between the meandering and straight channels. It showed how and why the meandering geometry leads to intensify gas-liquid mass transfer. All these findings enabled to formulate a scaling law, expressed in terms of Sherwood, Graetz and Péclet numbers, able to describe the evolution of gas-liquid mass transfer as a function of axial position and operating conditions.

Návrh opatření na horním toku Svratky / Proposal measures at upper reaches Svratka River

Klepárníková, Radka January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the proposal of measures on the Svratka stream in the cadastral area Český Herálec and Herálec na Moravě. The aim of the diploma thesis is to propose appropriate flood protection in the Herálec urban area and to elaborate proposals of nature friendly measures outside the municipality’s built up area, which will enable the renewal of the ecological functions of Svratka in the spring area. In the diploma thesis the assessment of the current state of the watercourse in the analyzed locality was caried out and also the assessment of the capacity of the watercourse and the objects on there. Furthermore, the flood levels and its areas were determined. Hydraulic water flow calculations were performed using the 1D and 1D/2D numerical model. For calculation, HEC-RAS 5.0.3 was used. When processing a 1D/2D numerical model, a manual describing the progress of work in the HEC-RAS 5.0.3 program was also created. On the basis of the results from the numerical model, a proposal for flood protection measures in the urban area and nature friendly measures in the extravilan was carried out.
