Salazar Delgado, Maria Guadalupe 05 April 2022 (has links)
The representation of women politicians in the media influences the perception of society about their role and capacities to exercise public functions. The present research aims to contribute to the analysis of this representation in a journalistic communication medium. Two women have been selected who assumed a leading role in two different periods of Peruvian history: María Elena Moyano Delgado (1991 - 1992) and Verónika Mendoza Frisch (2016). Under the theories of discourse (Foucault, 1970); critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 1999); representation (Hall, 1997); leadership (Morales and Cuadrado, 2011); gender stereotypes (Sau, 1993); and development of gender planning (Moser, 1995), it has been tried to investigate how the political context, gender and political ideology influence the representation that is made in the media "La República" about two women with political leading roles. This analysis is carried out in a comparative way between both study subjects. A mixed sequential methodology has been implemented that makes it possible to identify the main elements around representation (quantitative) and then delve into these (qualitative). In conclusion, The results show that the leadership profiles of both women are built assuming more masculine roles to a certain extent, faced with the need to stand out from others to make themselves heard. At the same time, these profiles are influenced by different starting points: one from a neighborhood space in the hands of women's organizations and the other as a representative of a political coalition that aspires to reach the presidential seat.

The Women’s Renaissance: An Analysis of Gender Expectations and Experiences in Early Modern Europe

Shelnutt-Beam, Taryn 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
In 1976 Joan Kelly released her influential article “Did Women have a Renaissance?” Kelly argued that women did not enjoy any of the benefits of the period. Rather, she claimed, the lives of women were actually worse after the 1400s than they had been before. Since 1976, new primary documents authored by women have been discovered. Moreover, new access to relevant writings by authors like Francesco Barbaro, Pier Vergerio, Leonardo Bruni, Juan Luis Vives, and Erasmus make revisiting Kelly’s arguments possible. This thesis uses a sample of these texts to explore women’s experiences and create innovative avenues to explore in gender history. Towards those ends, it combines recent scholarship with primary documents to reveal an incongruence between the expectations placed on women and their self-identified lived experiences. It offers, thus, a more complicated world than that presented in Kelly’s paradigmatic study.

A Dormitory for Architecture Students in Alexandria, Virginia

Cerami, Nestor Gabriel 31 July 2006 (has links)
This thesis is an intimate exploration. A personal journey between here and there: what I left behind, what I always kept close to me and all the new things that I learned and experience during the last four years. I just tried to put myself together as a person as well as an architect; taking from my personal experiences the inspiration and the tools to create a building. The building is orientated to American and foreign students coming to the metropolitan area of Washington DC to study at the Center and willing to take advantage of the opportunities of the city. The idea was to create a building for civic adaptation, to educate and inspire students not only in architecture but also in civic life and prepare them to be responsible citizens. The dormitory was inspired by the friendly spirit of the WAAC with the intention of supporting the Center in its varied goals and enhancing its academic perspectives. / Master of Architecture

Entre sicários e pistoleiros = uma leitura comparada de O invasor, Rosario tijeras e Un asesino solitario / Among gunmen and sicarios : a comparative reading between O Invasor, Rosario tijeras and Un asesino solitario

Alves, Fernanda Andrade do Nascimento, 1983- 26 August 2018 (has links)

Por fim, o último capítulo dedica-se ao diálogo desses textos literários com os presentes em outros meios, como a televisão, o cinema e a música / Abstract: This study proposes the reading of three Latin American literary texts: O Invasor, written by Brazilian Marçal Aquino, Rosario Tijeras, written by Colombian Jorge Franco and Un asesino solitario, written by Mexican Élmer Mendoza. Elected analysis axis was the emblematic character figuration, the gunman/assassin. In all three texts, it is possible to highlight similar aspects: the design of a social other, the gangster, opposed by or to which organically relates a representative of the middle/upper class; the construction of a narrative voice that, in different measures, puts strain on that relationship; the configuration of cities crossed by the crime and discourses about violence; recovery of a character, the bandit, present in the earlier literary tradition of each country; the adherence to popular genres such as melodrama and detective novel. Considering these aspects, this thesis is divided in two parts. Focusing on space and narrative voice, the two chapters of the first part aim to show how the novels constitute the relationship with otherness in the urban area and how they build up, at the same time, a speech about the city and the delinquent. The second part is devoted to the cultural imaginary around the bandit and the violence figuration. Thus, the third chapter approaches marks of the novel noir in O Invasor, melodramatic traits in Rosario Tijeras and police plots elements in Un asesino solitario. The fourth chapter proposes a study of the development of the marginal figure in Brazilian, Colombian and Mexican literature, through, respectively, types like the trickster and the outlaw, the pájaro and the bandolero. Finally, the last chapter is devoted to dialogue these literary texts with the stories present in other media, such as TV, cinema and music / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutora em Teoria e História Literária

Ayala Richter, Verónica Pamela 10 June 2017 (has links)

Curating the Americas: Library Practices and Early Histories of the New World Between Spain and Venice

Mendez, Alexandra Vialla January 2021 (has links)
This dissertation investigates how a network of Venetian and Spanish scholars placed ancient texts and new geographic information about the Americas in dialogue to create new histories of the modern world, from the 1510s to the 1550s. I focus in particular on the print production and manuscript exchanges of Venetian state officials Giovanni Battista Ramusio, Pietro Bembo, and Andrea Navagero, and Spanish state officials Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. Under the custodianship of Navagero, Bembo, and Ramusio, the Library of St. Mark, donated to the Republic of Venice by the Greek cardinal Bessarion in 1468, functioned as a site of knowledge production. The gatekeeping and information management practices that these men carried out as caretakers of this politically charged library of Greek and Latin books informed their manuscript exchanges and print production. Geographic news from the Americas in the form of letters, accounts, maps, and printed works posed a particular challenge to classical understandings of the globe, and the Spanish and Venetian intellectuals examined here together faced the challenge of apprehending the new and determining the role and relevance of ancient texts such as those of Ptolemy, Plato, Pliny, and Strabo in the contemporary world. Through their histories, summaries, anthologies, and commentaries, they made news into history, curating the presentation of the Americas for their reading publics. Their published works fixed in print the fluid correspondence networks and manuscript exchanges that enabled their creation, making the private public with a great deal of mediation, selection, and suppression or selective acknowledgment of sources and dialogues. By reading the printed works together with the manuscript backstory, I reveal how these scholars pushed at the boundaries of what was expected of them as Spanish or Venetian state agents. Their curated presentation of information about the Americas obscured the porosity of intellectual exchange among Spanish and Venetian intellectuals at the time, and the extent to which the production of Americana in Venice is not just a Venetian story, but also a Spanish one.
