From craft to flexibility: linkages and industrial governance systems in the development of a capital-goods industry in Mendoza, Argentina, 1895-1990

Borello, José Antonio 22 May 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines the development of a capital goods industry in Mendoza Argentina through an analysis of linkages and industrial governance systems. Linkages are material, informational, and financial flows among firms. Industrial governance systems are the social practices that cement linkages. Hence, linkages are understood as socially embedded and not as market transactions governed solely by price considerations. The study has two major arguments. First, it claims that contrary to conventional industrial location theory firms do not locate in view of the previous existence of certain favorable factors, but rather construct these factors as they grow. This argument is operationalized by asking how firms generate in time their own linkages. Examples taken from the 1895-1990 period include labor and subcontractors, clientele, services, and the emergence of economic groups. Second, this study argues that the capital-goods industry in Mendoza is undergoing a Substantial (and unprecedented) transition in the way production is organized. The transition is part of the larger shift taking place at both the national and global scales. The analysis focuses on the historical pattern of linkages and governance systems in the industry, and contrasts that pattern with that of the recent decade. Implicit in the previous two arguments are two territorial dimensions. First, the development of “industry produces regions" (Storper and Walker 1989). Second, at the intra-city level this means that the evolution of the industry (and specifically its linkage structure and governance systems) has a direct bearing on the direction and nature of the city’s growth. These two arguments are illustrated through empirical work in Mendoza, a city of close to a million people in western Argentina. Over 100 interviews gathered over ten months reveal the origins, evolution, and current form of linkages in the capital-goods industry. These interviews are complemented by data from a variety of sources. The main conclusions of the study are three. First, the study illustrates the richness and depth that emerges from a project based on substantial fieldwork. Second, it shows the advantages of conceiving industrialization not as the location of plants in response to favorable conditions, but as a process initiated by the firms themselves. Third, the dissertation shows that the capital-goods industry of Mendoza iS in a transitional phase towards new ways of organizing production. The transition is expressed in new linkage structures, new governance systems, and the emergence of new types of firms and institutional arrangements. / Ph. D.

Strazzere, Leonardo 25 March 2009 (has links)
A detailed study of the Choiyoi Group in the area between Rincón de los Vallecitos (Cordillera Frontal) and Pampa de Canota (Precordillera Mendocina) was carried out. The stratigraphy, lithology, geochemistry and geochronology aspects weredetailed analized Three sedimentary associations and four volcanic and volcaniclastic, whose ages range between 277 and 273 are laterally interbedded. They represent pre-caldera, caldera and pos- caldera effusive events. Its geochemistry indicates subduction components of a high K calcoalkaline and minor shoshonitic series. They quickly evolved to a shoshonitic and minor high K calcoalkaline series. The last event are clearly related to an intraplate volcanism. The configuration and thickness of the volcanic associations indicate a Piecemeal model of caldera, characterized by the existence of numerous independent blocks that form the floor of the caldera. The volcanic sequences at Cerro Pajarito (Cordon del Portillo, Cordillera Frontal) and La Primavera-Arroyo Ñireco (Cordillera del Viento, Neuquén) are considered as no part of Choiyoi Group. The generation of such large volumes of acidic rocks, as the recognized during this study, formed in such a short period of time involve thickening of the continental crust with the consequent partial fusion of the continental crust. This event produces sub horizontal magmatic chambers located to a little deep that seems to be common in regions with active volcanism around the world, as in the Puna of Argentina.

Montaño Moscoso, Edgar, Pedraza Morales, Melisa, Rebaza Vásquez, Saniel José Leoncio, Navarro Páliza del Carpio, Sergio Fernando, Torres Rodríguez, Ricardo Alejandro 20 September 2018 (has links)
Achieving sustainable development is today the "Common Good" that the Peruvian Constitution established as the Supreme State, who must promote the development and technological innovation, that it takes so much for Peru to become an Industrialized Nation. Globalization requires both organizations and States, with technologies’ help, to be highly competitive this effect will result in economic development and improvement in life quality. The technological boom represents a tool, which efficiently and opportunely employed will overcome geographical barriers and should be a great incentive for the integration and inclusion within Peru and with the world market. Development of this strategy represents an alternative for the Province of Rodríguez de Mendoza in order to achieve competitiveness and sustainable development, reformulating traditional economic activities through the use of technology and encouraging the formation of clusters. The Strategic Plan of the Province of Rodríguez de Mendoza has been carried out based on the Sequential Strategic Process model developed by Dr. Fernando D’Alessio Ipinza, based on an analysis of the current situation, to reach a desired future situation, by means of establishing a vision, mission, values, long-term and short-term objectives and strategies associated with the environment and a SWOT analysis. / Tesis

Deriving Genetic Networks Using Text Mining

Olsson, Elin January 2002 (has links)

On the Internet an enormous amount of information is available that is represented in an unstructured form. The purpose with a text mining tool is to collect this information and present it in a more structured form. In this report text mining is used to create an algorithm that searches abstracts available from PubMed and finds specific relationships between genes that can be used to create a network. The algorithm can also be used to find information about a specific gene. The network created by Mendoza et al. (1999) was verified in all the connections but one using the algorithm. This connection contained implicit information. The results suggest that the algorithm is better at extracting information about specific genes than finding connections between genes. One advantage with the algorithm is that it can also find connections between genes and proteins and genes and other chemical substances.
