(Un) Forming Nature: Kurt Schwitters's Merz Barn (1947-1948)

Pounds, Megan Pounds 27 October 2016 (has links)
This thesis centers on Kurt Schwitters’s Merz Barn (1947-1948), exploring the relationship between nature and the Merz principles of formung (forming) and entformung (un-forming) within the context of this late work. The Merz Barn, the last of Schwitters’s Merzbauten, has yet to receive the extensive level of research accorded to its famous Hannover predecessor, resulting in an underdeveloped grasp of the project as a whole within Merzbau scholarship. The present study considers Schwitters’s increasing orientation towards nature as a model for artistic creation to elicit an understanding of the ways in which his paradoxical Merz formula, “Formen heißt entformeln,” evolved during his period of exile. I contend that Schwitters employed the organic processes of natural growth and decay to realize the principles of formung and entformung in his Merz Barn. Furthermore, the sculptural interior underscores the dialectical exchange between forming and un-forming, highlighting the liminal space between the opposing processes.

A Study of Polycarbonate / Poly (butylene terephthalate) Compounding in a Twin Screw Extruder

Tareque, Md. Hasan 25 March 2009 (has links)
In this work, the compounding of polycarbonate (PC) / poly-butylene terephthalate (PBT) blends was studied for the purpose of improving quality of products with reduced wastage and finally to satisfaction of end users. The effect of material rheological characteristics and processing conditions on compounding of PC /PBT was investigated through statistical experiments carried out on a 58 mm twin-screw extruder at SABIC Innovative Plastics Limited (formerly GE Plastics Limited) in Cobourg, Ontario. Melt Volume-Flow Rate (MVR) is the most commonly used property to monitor the quality of products of PC/PBT blends. The MVR was studied with different sampling times and correlations between product properties (melt flow) and processing conditions (screw speed, flow rates) were discussed. The rheological behavior of PC/PBT blends was investigated by dynamic and capillary rheometers. The effects of processing conditions (screw speed, feed rate) on viscosity were measured and it was found that the Cox-Merz rule is not valid for PC/PBT blends. The change of morphology of PC/PBT blends was observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) by using different types of samples. Those samples were (i) PC/PBT blends pellets, (ii) PC/PBT blend samples, but collected after completing the rheological tests in the parallel plate rheometer, and (iii) PC/PBT blend samples, but collected after completing the rheological tests in the capillary rheometer. There was evidence that the samples collected after completing the tests in the parallel and capillary rheometer might be degraded due to temperature and time.

Är Guds rike här nu igen? : En jämförelse mellan Jesus undervisning och hans judiska tradition angående Guds rike som närvarande. / Is the kingdom of God present once more? : A comparison between the teaching of Jesus and his jewish tradition regarding the kingdom of God as present.

Berméus, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
This essay is about how five different exegetical researchers view the historical Jesus teaching about the kingdom of God as present and the possibility for it to be in continuity with his jewish tradition and contemporary context. Jesus announces that the kingdom of God is present and that this present reality is revealed through the miraculous deeds of Jesus. The idea of the kingdom of God as present is in some ways to be found in different texts and certain sects within Second Temple Judaism. Through their work on the historical Jesus the five exegetes shows that, even though the language and the symbol of the kingdom of God is similar, Jesus is in some ways doing something radically new and different in his use of the term “the kingdom of God.” By comparing certain logions with certain texts from Second Temple Judaism, this study shows that there is some continuity, but also that Jesus is presenting a new type of kingdom, a new type of presence and another kind of movement when presenting the kingdom of God as present.
