Messengers and the art of reported speech in the IliadHutcheson, Laurie Glenn 13 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on an aspect of the Iliad that at first might seem particularly formulaic, archaic, and, since Parry, characteristic of orality. When reporting messages, characters frequently repeat large portions of their messages verbatim. In contrast to other speakers, who reveal themselves through speech, messengers are supposedly constrained to repeat the messages that have been dictated to them. The Iliadic messenger has even been described as a “tape recorder” (Létoublon), or a voice “uniquely marked as ‘transparent’” (Barrett). Messengers in the Iliad have been thought to be defined and limited by the convention of verbatim repetition.
Despite this prevailing view, I demonstrate, in example after example, the flexibility and expressiveness of messengers in the Iliad. The motif of messages draws attention to the choices messengers make, highlighting their emphases, omissions, and priorities. In diverging from their models and contextualizing their reports, messengers mediate and interpret their messages. These reports point to the poem’s concern with the dynamics of effective (or failed) communication.
The Iliad dramatizes communication through messages, e.g., between Zeus and mortals, between the men on the battlefield and women in the city, between intimate conversations and public representations, between an isolated warrior and his community. Beginning with professional messengers, I show how heralds tailor their messages to their audiences, sometimes providing a buffer between kings and others (chapter 1). Iris, the divine messenger, uses a wide variety of approaches, demonstrating that a “faithful” report requires sensitive adaptation. Her interactions offer windows into the characters she addresses (chapter 2). Turning to major characters, I show how Hektor and Priam reveal themselves: Hektor projects a heroic image of Paris and himself, while representing less heroic, private speeches; Priam shows his doubts about divine communication and asserts his own desires (chapter 3). Thetis re-orients the directives she brings, adapting them to her relationships and priorities, thereby revealing divine and human perspectives (chapter 4). Finally, Odysseus and Patroklos are unsuccessful messengers, who both omit great portions of the speeches they report in their efforts to persuade Achilles, and who both fall short of their commissioners’ hopes for their messages (chapter 5). / 2020-11-13T00:00:00Z

A High-fat Meal Alters Post-prandial mRNA Expression of SIRT1, SIRT4, and SIRT6Best Sampson, Jill Nicole 12 1900 (has links)
Sirtuins (SIRT) regulate the transcription of various genes involved in the development of diet-induced obesity and chronic disease; however, it is unknown how they change acutely following a high-fat meal. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a high-fat meal (65% kcals/d; 85% fat recommendation), on SIRT1-7 mRNA expression in blood leukocytes at 1, 3, and 5-h post-prandial. Men and women (N=24) reported to the lab following an overnight fast (>12H). Total RNA was isolated and reverse transcribed prior to using a Taqman qPCR technique with 18S rRNA as a normalizer to determine SIRT1-7 mRNA expression. An additional aliquot of serum was used to measure triglycerides. Data was analyzed using a RM ANOVA with P<0.05. Triglycerides (P<0.001; 124%) peaked at 3-h. SIRT 1 (P=0.004; 70%), and SIRT 6 (P=0.017; 53%) decreased expression at 3-h. SIRT4 (P=0.024) peaked at 5H relative to baseline (70%) and 3-h (68%). To our knowledge, this is the first study to report that consumption of a high-fat meal transiently alters SIRT mRNA expression consistent in a pattern that mirrors changes in serum triglycerides. Decrease in expression of SIRT1 and SIRT6 combined with an increased SIRT4 would be consistent with an increase in metabolic disease risk if maintained on a chronic basis.

Previous issue date: 2015-03-25 / This master thesis aims to understand the exchange of experiences, cultural references
and consumption practices among different population segments of the city of São Paulo
through investigation of messengers, meaning those with family income varying between
2 and 8 minimum wages, living in peripheral areas of the city and exercising positions
such as house maid, babysitter, concierge, motorcycle courier, store salesperson, office
assistant, among others. What happens in the daily flow between their home and work
site? What so many house maids, for instance, take from and bring to their day-to-day
routine concerning consumption experience? Immersed in a context of social rising of
segments of the Brazilian population and demographic bonus from 2010 to 2030 Brazil
has had and will have most of its population of working age , many of such messengers
are currently privileged persons in current consumption contexts. Further to their
economic capital, such persons were investigated from a complex perspective that took
into account other types of capital: cultural, social and symbolic capital and also a new
concept formulated by the author along this paper, the emotional capital. This research
aims to immerse in the life of such messengers to understand, after all, what are the
messages exchanged between such different everyday realities. For such purpose, the first
part of the paper consists of exploitation of consumption approach based on the premise
that this may be a place to exercise citizenship in a consumer society , the different
types of capital, geographic and socio-demographic data of the city of São Paulo. Next,
narratives and the main findings of the field survey are presented: a qualitative approach
with in-depth interviews at 10 messengers home and work environments. Among the
authors underlying theoretical and conceptually this research we highlight: from the
standpoint of consumption and culture, Nestor Canclini (2006; 2008), Raymond Williams
(2011) and Edgar Morin (2011); and of social class, Pierre Bourdieu (2008) and Jessé de
cultura, Nestor Canclini (2006; 2008), Raymond Williams (2011) e Edgar Morin (2011);
e de classe social, Pierre Bourdieu (2008) e Jessé de Souza (2010)
