Evaluation of scrap tire-derived porous rubber tubing as a green membrane for sustainable water filtration (ECOL-Mem process)

Increasing population and extensive urbanization have strained resources around the world, promoting water scarcity and solid waste accumulation. Addressing the issues of access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation in developing countries is challenging due to limited technological and financial resources. Therefore, it is imperative that durable, low-cost, and sustainable technologies are developed to help alleviate these problems. At the same time, the production of solid waste has increased and includes waste tires, which pose a health and environmental hazard. Although efforts have been made to develop new markets for recycled scrap tires, a vast majority are still being stockpiled or landfiled. This study aims to evaluate a water treatment system that addresses the problem of access to safe drinking water and sanitation, while providing a new market for recycled scrap tires. The system, termed ECOL-Mem, utilizes commercially available porous rubber tubing (PRT), which is marketed for drip irrigation purposes. To our knowledge, this is the first time this product has been used in a water treatment system. The PRT is manufactured through a hot extrusion process and contains 65% recycled crumb rubber and a binder (e.g. polyethylene). The proposed configuration simulates a hollow fiber membrane filtration system driven by a vacuum that operates inside-out. The system was first tested using clean water to obtain intrinsic characteristics. It was then tested using bentonite and sludge solutions that simulated impaired source water. For the case of a bentonite solution containing 700 mg/L, 20L of permeate could be obtained in one hour while the total solids removal remained around 20%. In order to improve the water quality, a flocculation-enhanced filtration phase was explored. The flocculant is chitin, a biopolymer that can be derived from waste shellfish. Upon addition of the chitin, between 60% and 70% of total solids removal could be obtained for different feed waters. Although optimization is needed, the PRT system has shown promising results, while providing a technology that targets the needs of developing countries in the areas of safe drinking water, basic sanitation, and solid waste recycling.

Developing archaeomagnetic dating in the British Iron Age

Archaeomagnetism is an area of research that utilises the magnetic properties of archaeological materials to date past human activity. This research aimed to use the evidence of past geomagnetism, as recorded by archaeological and geological materials, to identify and characterise short timescale changes in the Earth¿s magnetic field. This contribution to the discipline focused on the first millennium BC, as there is evidence that during this time the Earth¿s magnetic field experienced rapid changes in direction. This work focused on an established weakness in archaeomagnetic studies, i.e. the application of archaeological information to assign a date range to the magnetic directions. The date ranges for 232 magnetic directions from 98 Iron Age sites were reviewed and a programme of fieldwork produced 25 new magnetic directions from 11 Iron Age sites across Britain. The approach developed in this thesis has made significant improvements to the data examined, which represent the prehistoric section of the British secular variation curve (SVC). These data have been incorporated into the British archaeomagnetic dataset that now comprises over 1000 magnetic directions and will be used to generate future British SVCs. The potential of the near continuous records of geomagnetic secular variation from British lake sediment sequences to SVCs was explored. This showed that these sediments have recorded the relative changes in the Earth¿s magnetic field but the dating and method of constructing the British master curve requires revision. As SVCs are predominately used as calibration curves for archaeomagnetic dating, this work provides a foundation for a revised and extended British SVC. This revision would be to the mutual benefit of studies in archaeology and archaeomagnetism, as the latter could potentially enable highresolution dating of Iron Age material, providing a viable alternative to radiocarbon dating.

“Now we are becoming partners” Implementing Ecological Sanitation in rural Tanzania- With an action research approach

Poor sanitation is a huge problem in third world countries today; every year 1,5 million children die due to diarrheal diseases caused by poor sanitation. International policies such as The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which will be replaced by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015, have been set by the international community as tools to decrease the poverty in the world today, and problems that emerged from it such as poor sanitation. Participatory methods are emphasise to receive the goals as well as new working methods to shift the development paradigm from marked oriented towards sustainable development, which means that also the Earth’s well-being must be included in the SDGs. Ecological sanitation (Eco-san) is a system that reuses the human waste back to grooving activities, and can improve the situation in all three areas of sustainable development, i.e. economical, environmental and social development with it’s reusing approach. Participation in implementation of Eco-san system is important for enabling sustainable projects as well as receive better acceptance for the reuse approach. The research presented in this thesis had the aim to improve the sanitation situation by introducing and implementing Eco-san in a rural area in the Northern part of Tanzania by using an action oriented research approach. The participants together with the researcher developed the project to further see the interpretations of Eco-san and possibilities to implement Eco-san in the area as well as if the action research was a convenient way to introduce such a project. The study was conducted in two cycles were critical theory and diffusion of innovation were used as analysis tools for the introduction and implementation of the toilets. The findings from the first cycle showed that the participants were willing to learn about Eco-san by observing the idea through a demonstration toilet. Therefore the second cycle lead to implementation of Eco-san in a school of the area. These toilets are today in use and managed by the students at the school. Participating approach has therefore been a successful working method were the participants gained the knowledge they needed to develop and improve their situation. This can further be argued as a valuable approach for other development projects and to meet the upcoming SDGs. However, further action and education to other village members outside the school and up scaling possibilities in the community are needed.

An Overview of Progress towards RBM Objectives and MDGs Concerning Malaria in the Americas: A Comparative Analysis of Data from the Years 2000 and 2005

This study analyzed the malaria situation in 21 malaria endemic countries in the region of the Americas to assess progress towards achieving Roll Back Malaria objectives (RBM) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The study analyzed data from the years 2000 and 2005, which also highlighted various interventions that were underway to improve the malaria situation in the region during this period. Data from the year 2000 were used as a baseline both for RBM objectives as well as for MDGs. Findings of the study indicated the region of the Americas has made progress toward reducing the burden of malaria as a public health burden and this itself is a reflection of progress towards achieving the two global targets. Outcomes of the study also revealed some programmatic strength that might help the region to embark on a more comprehensive, interdisciplinary malaria elimination strategy in the majority of the region’s countries.

Petrology of the non-mineralized Wheeler River sandstone-hosted alteration system and the Eagle Point and Millennium basement-hosted unconformity-related uranium deposits, Athabasca Basin, Saskatchewan: implications for uranium exploration

A study of the Millennium and Eagle Point basement-hosted deposits was conducted to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the alteration in these two atypical uraniferous systems and to apply these findings in formulating effective exploration strategies. In addition, an investigation of the Wheeler River “apparently barren” sandstone-hosted alteration system was conducted to provide insights into the critical events needed in order to form sandstone-hosted unconformity-related deposits. At Millennium, the atypical alteration halo, wherein the inner chlorite halo is much smaller than other basement-hosted deposits, is the result of pervasive muscovite alteration of the basement rocks by Na-K-Fe basinal brines during the pre-ore stage at ca. 250°C. As alteration of the basement rocks progressed, the basinal brines acquired Ca, Fe and Mg while creating up to 20% voids in the basement rocks. Prior to the mineralizing event, the chemically modified basinal fluids formed a minor Fe-rich chamoisite halo that demarcates a redox front during the ca. 1590 Ma syn-ore stage, where uranium ore was precipitated. At Eagle Point, the atypical alteration halo, wherein dolomite and calcite alteration is more significant than other basement-hosted deposits, is the result of more intense pre-Athabasca Basin alteration. The Eagle Point deposit is also distinct by significant late remobilization of primary uraninite into secondary structures that occurred at ca. 535 Ma. At the Wheeler River “apparently barren” alteration system, the critical factor for the lack of uranium mineralization in the sandstone is the temporal relationship between the different fluids with the uranium-bearing oxidized basinal fluids present prior to the reduced chemically modified basinal fluids and reduced basement fluids. However, the possibility of a small basement-hosted uranium deposit at Wheeler River cannot be excluded because the sudoite-producing basement fluids may represent basinal brines that reacted with basement lithologies to become reducing and Mg-rich, and therefore may have precipitated uraninite during this process. The major question which was dealt with in this thesis was exactly what the experience of the Muncie residents who are currently a part of the Muncie HOPE VI Program has been. I explored through a series of five in-depth interviews the feelings and true opinions of these residents. We discussed issues such as: what life was like for them in Munsyana, how they felt when they heard that they were being relocated, how life has been for them since they were relocated, and where and how they would have changed the process for the better.Many of the residents feel that relocation was a positive step in their lives. The residents continually stated that there were still things that were not quite where they should be with the program; however, they would not change their current living situations for anything. / Department of Urban Planning

This study analyzes the first year of a planned five-year implementation of Millennium Place, a HOPE VI-funded project located in Muncie, IN, focusing on those implementing it. To determine what was important in the work of those implementing it, a series of interviews were conducted with key personnel from the various agencies that collaborated in implementation. Although the participants were asked a variety of questions about their work, the interviews focused on what they found to be the biggest challenges in their work. The interviews were transcribed and methodically analyzed, and a series of reoccurring themes emerged, with the issue of control being the most prominent. Recommendations based on the findings were then developed, both for implementation as well as for possibilities for further study regarding the HOPE VI program as a whole. / Department of Urban Planning
