Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of Sensor Nodes (SNs) spatially removed from one another, that can monitor a variety of environmental conditions. SNs then collaboratively communicate the collected information to a central location, by passing along the data in a multi-hop fashion. SN energy resources are limited and energy monitoring and preservation in WSNs are therefore very important. Since multi-hop communication takes place, the routing protocol used may have a significant effect on the balanced use and preservation of energy in the WSN. A significant amount of research has been performed on energy efficient routing in WSNs, but the majority of these studies were only implemented in simulation. The simulation engines used to perform these studies do not take into account all of the relevant environmental factors affecting energy efficiency. In order to comment on the feasibility of a routing protocol meant to improve the energy efficiency of a WSN, it is important to test the routing scheme in a realistic environment. In this study, a SN specifically designed to be used in an energy consumption ascertaining WSN testbed was developed. This SN has a unique set of features which makes it ideal for this application. Each SN is capable of recording its own power consumption. The design also features a lithium battery charging circuit which improves the reusability of the SN. Each node has a detachable sensor module and transceiver module which enables the researcher to conduct experiments using various transceivers and sensors. Twenty of these SNs were then used to form an energy consumption ascertaining WSN testbed. This testbed was used to compare the energy consumption of a Minimum Total Transmission Power Routing (MTTPR) scheme to a shortest hop path routing scheme. The results show that each SN’s transmission power setting dependant efficiency has a significant effect on the overall performance of the MTTPR scheme. The MTTPR scheme might in some cases use more energy than a shortest hop path routing scheme because the transmission power setting dependant efficiency of the transceiver is not taken into account. The MTTPR scheme as well as other similar routing schemes can be improved by taking the transceiver efficiency at different transmission power settings into account. Employment legislation concerning Chinese nationals in Botswana : lessons from SADC and the ILO / Cornelia Elizabeth Steinberg-Smit

This study examines the employment of non-citizens within the framework of appropriate regulatory statues and constitutional dispensations, as contained in the domestic legislation of the individual countries, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Lesotho as part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Focusing on labour law development regarding the legislative position of the employment of non-citizens, such as; immigration requirements, basic minimum employment conditions and protection of employment rights have consequently been part of Africa-China economic relations with SADC host countries. The People's Republic of China (PRC), or China, assistance and its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) impacts SADC globalised market economies. China State and Chinese companies, increasing engagements in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa and to a lesser extent in Lesotho, through extended foreign diplomatic and bilateral trade relationships, are characterised by dominant employment of Chinese non-citizens within these host countries. Botswana and the other host countries’ labour market regulative legislation, faces the challenge of developing labour law regulating the protection of decent work, within the international ILO framework for fair and stable globalisation. Assessment of the current labour laws, and economic influences of the individual countries, would bridge the legal cultural gap and enhance sustainable economic growth. Reduced Complexity Viterbi Decoders for SOQPSK Signals over Multipath Channels

This communication takes place over a multipath channel consisting of two components - a line of sight and one or more ground reflected paths which result in frequency selective fading. We concentrate on the ARTM SOQPSKTG transmit waveform suite and decode information bits using the reduced complexity Viterbi algorithm. Two different methodologies are proposed to implement reduced complexity Viterbi decoders in multipath channels. The first method jointly equalizes the channel and decodes the information bits using the reduced complexity Viterbi algorithm while the second method utilizes the minimum mean square error equalizer prior to applying the Viterbi decoder. An extensive numerical study is performed in comparing the performance of the above methodologies. We also demonstrate the performance gain offered by our reduced complexity Viterbi decoders over the existing linear receiver. In the numerical study, both perfect and estimated channel state information are considered.

A multi-antenna equalization scheme is presented where each antenna's unique multipath channel is equalized using a pilot-aided optimal linear minimum mean-square error filter. Following independent channel equalization, a maximal ratio combining technique is used to generate a single receiver output for detection. This multi-antenna equalization process is shown to improve detection performance over maximal ratio combining alone.

An Optimum Detector for Space-Time Trellis Coded Differential MSK

In this work a new analytical expression for the channel estimation error of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system is obtained when the wireless medium is continuously changing in the temporal domain. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate our findings. Space-time (ST) coding using Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) has spectral advantages relative to linear modulations. In spite of the spectral benefits, Space-Time Trellis Codes (STTC) using the CPM implementation of Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) scheme has inherent inphase and quadrature interference, when the received complex baseband signal is the input into the matchfilter to remove the shaped sinusoid pulses. In this paper a novel optimum transmitting and detecting structure for STTC-MSK is proposed. Treating the Alamouti scheme as an outer code, each STTC MSK waveform frame is immediately followed by the orthogonal conjugate waveform frame at the transmit side. At the receiver first orthogonal wave forming is applied, then a new time-variant yet simple trellis structure of the STTC-MSK signals is developed. This STTC-MSK detector is absolutely guaranteed to be I/Q interference-free and still keeps a smaller computation load compared with STTC-QPSK. Simulations are made over quasi-static AWGN fading channel. It is shown that our detector for ST-MSK has solved the I/Q interference problem and has around 2.8 dB gain compared with the Alamouti Scheme and 3.8 dB gain for bit error rate at 5 X 10^(-3) in a 2 by 1 Multiple Input Single Output system.

Monitoring sand particle concentration in multiphase flow using acoustic emission technology

Multiphase flow is the simultaneous flow of two or several phases through a system such as a pipe. This common phenomenon can be found in the petroleum and chemical engineering industrial fields. Transport of sand particles in multiphase production has attracted considerable attention given sand production is a common problem especially to the oil and gas industry. The sand production causes loss of pipe wall thickness which can lead to expensive failures and loss of production time. Build-up of sand in the system can result in blockage and further hamper production. Monitoring of multiphase flow is a process that has been established over several decades. This thesis reports an assessment of the application of Acoustic Emission (AE) technology as an alternative online technique to monitoring of sand particles under multiphase flow conditions in a horizontal pipe. The research was conducted on a purpose built test rig with the purpose of establishing a relation between AE activity and sand concentration under different multiphase flow conditions. The investigation consisted of five experimental tests. The initial experiment was performed to provide a basis for the application of AE technology to detect sand particle impact prior to performing tests in multiphase flow conditions. Further investigations are reported on two phase air-sand, water-sand and air- water-sand three-phase flows in a horizontal pipe for different superficial gas velocities (VSG), superficial liquid velocities (VSL) and sand concentrations (SC). The experimental findings clearly showed a correlation exists between AE energy levels and multiphase flow parameters, such as superficial liquid velocity (VSL), superficial gas velocity (VSG), sand concentration and sand minimum transport condition (MTC).
