Stability of Tetracycline Hydrochloride in Miracle Mouthwash Formulations Containing Diphenhydramine and Dexamethasone Elixir

Fazel, Mahdieh, Goodlet, Kellie, Myrdal, Paul, Karlage, Kelly January 2015 (has links)
Class of 2015 Abstract / Objectives: To assess the solubility and stability of tetracycline in compounded miracle mouthwash solutions over time, and at different temperatures (room temperature versus refrigerated) and pH (unaltered versus pH 7). Methods: Miracle mouthwash (MMW) solutions were compounded using tetracycline HCl capsules and 1:1 pseudo-dexamethasone elixir and diphenhydramine. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure the tetracycline concentrations in the MMW samples tested. Data on tetracycline crystal composition over time were also collected using powder x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Results: For the tetracycline MMW solutions stored at room temperature, only 16% of the original tetracycline remained in solution after 24 hours, stabilizing at 65-81 mcg/mL on day 5 then decreasing further down to 45 mcg/mL by day 15. Similar results were obtained for the refrigerated tetracycline MMW solution (11% of original concentration after 5 days, with a decrease from 31-54 mcg/mL on day 5 to 22 mcg/mL on day 15). Tetracycline concentrations appeared to undergo a steeper decline in MMW solutions of pH 7 than in unadjusted MMW solutions (pH 4.68). All MMW samples exhibited a conversion from tetracycline HCl to tetracycline hexahydrate. Conclusions: Tetracycline solubility decreases rapidity in MMW within 24 hours of compounding regardless of temperature. MMW solutions at pH 7 may have further reduced solubility. Stability decreases at a stable rate from tetracycline HCl to tetracycline hexahydrate.

Marking the boundaries : explorations of meaning and identity in the York Corpus Christi cycle

Christie, Sheila 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the implications of the relationships between building trade guilds and the pageants they produced in York, and examines this relationship over the two-hundred-year production of the York Cycle. Because this relationship and the reception of any dramatic performance is heavily influenced by context, we need to look closer at the social, political, and economic environment of late medieval York in order to better understand the range of interpretations available to the Cycle's original audience. Doing so also allows us to witness the issues of identity and community that are negotiated throughout these plays. Chapter 1 examines the guilds responsible for most day-to-day construction (the plasters, tilers, and carpenters) and explores the interpretations that the conjunction of guild casting, play text, and historical context invites. The Plasterers' "Creation" deals with issues of labour and political power, economic fluctuations influence representations of family and community in the Tilers' "Nativity," and the Carpenters' "Resurrection" explores issues of integrity and urban corruption, while also representing a struggle for social authority. Chapter Two considers the participation of groups outside of civic jurisdiction, most particularly the Masons, and investigates the ways in which the York Cycle may have cut across boundaries (or united "separate" groups) instead of, or as well as, reinforcing them. Finally, the changing contexts that in turn changed (or re-focused) the meanings of these texts reveal the boundaries over and through which concepts of identity and community were negotiated. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays

Kuntz, Emily Ciavarella January 2020 (has links)
My dissertation investigates the ways in which both medieval and early modern saint plays depict and incite religious conversion through self-aware theatrical techniques. In each of my chapters, I examine one or two popular saint plays from a given period and area (medieval England, medieval France, early modern Spain, and early modern England) and show how each play invites the audience to undergo a spiritual shift parallel to that of the saint protagonist. These playmakers harnessed the affective power and technology of theatrical performance to invite the audience to engage with performed religious conversion in a controlled, celebratory environment and to encourage them to convert toward a more deeply felt Christianity. The plays reconfigured the audience’s sensory and intellectual understanding of Christian theology in order for the audience to recognize spiritual truth within an inherently communal, participatory, and performative space. The plays I examine depend on the audience’s familiarity with theatrical culture and practice in order to distinguish between sincere and insincere religious performance. By making the process of conversion a theatrical performance onstage, these plays could advocate for the theatrical medium as a genuine and effective catalyst for spiritual renewal. In addition to joining the conversation on the nature and goals of early European theatre, my dissertation also argues for the continued intersection between performance studies and conversion studies, demonstrating the ways in which theatrical performance elucidates the ways in which communities can instigate and collectively feel conversion.

Teologický pohled na uzdravení v křesťanství a vybraných spirituálních hnutích 20. století / A theological view of healing in Christianity and selected spiritual streams of the 20th century

Doležal, Rafael January 2012 (has links)
DOLEŽAL Rafael: A theological view of healing in Christianity and selected spiritual streams of the 20th century, Praha: Teologická fakulta Univerzity Karlovy, 2012. The subject of the diploma thesis consists in study of healing, which is seen from a position of fundamental theology. Attention is paid especially to those claiming to be classified as miraculous ones. A theologically seized recovery is then compared with the concept of healing in selected spiritual streams of the 20th century, belonging to the group New Age. This diploma thesis analyzes the characteristics of miraculous healing, and examines their significance for religion. Keywords: fundamental theology, miracle, healing, New Age, holistic health

The Oberammergau passion play as a survival of the medieval miracle play

Timm, Carolyn Pulciver 01 January 1934 (has links)
The contributions of the Mediaeval Miracle Play to that of the Passion Play of Oberammergau are like those of a parent to a child. Life and form have been inherited but the development has gone far beyond the origin. Yet certain elements have continually been preserved in this same form and life The material for the story of the Oberammergau Play was in the Mediaeval Miracle Play. In both cases the dramatic climax was reached on Good Friday with the gospel of our Lord's death upon the cross. Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the story of His birth, His active career, His Passion, and His Resurrection, all, were united into one play which has remained to the present time.

Lagré, Mårten January 2012 (has links)

Hermann-Mesfen, Judith 13 September 2012 (has links)
At the end of the 1980's, while the first HIV/AIDS cases appeared, together with the Ethiopian Government the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwahedo Church (EOTC) committed officially itself to the fight against HIV/AIDS. In the 1990s, followers of the Ethiopian Church on their side started to dedicate themselves to holy water ritual hoping to be cured miraculously of HIV/AIDS. In 2004, the EOTC started to receive American subventions in order to promote abstinence and faithfulness among its followers. Two years later, antiretroviral treatments began to be largely and freely distributed entering in conflict with the spiritual values of the holy water cure, which excludes any other kind of therapy. This study, combining health and religion socio-anthropology approaches focuses on the way the Ethiopian Christianity in its two components – both institutional (EOTC) and ritual (Ethiopian Church) – involved itself in the fight against the epidemic. Furthermore, it addresses the way americans' grants and antiretroviral treatments became factors of change in this particular ancient Church. The analysis shows that traditionally, the Ethiopian Christianity is not a body in charge of regulating its followers' sexual behaviour. It is significant that followers infected by HIV seek healing through holy water cure for it reveals that in this religion, the emphasis is being put on forgiveness and redemption. Within the sociology of religious facts, this approach brings to light the fact that the Ethiopian Christianity is a religion of forgiveness, and thus that it will focus more on healing than prevention.

Trudel, Maryse 12 1900 (has links)
The religious landscape in Quebec has changed profoundly, even though the disaffection of the Catholic churches, some forms of devotion remain important, especially the devotion to Saint Brother André. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in October 2010, Saint Brother André is the first Canadian-born male Saint. He is responsible for the construction of Saint Joseph’s Oratory, the largest shrine dedicated to Saint Joseph in the world, and he is an important figure in Quebec. According to the Sanctuary’s data, every year, two million visitors visit the Oratory. These visitors have several profiles, they are either devout people from Montreal or the surrounding area, religious tourists, or pilgrims. This thesis deals with the devotion to Saint Brother André at the Saint Joseph Oratory of Mount Royal. The main objective is to understand the expressions and practices of this popular devotion as well as the experience lived by the devotees in this place of pilgrimage, using an ethnographic approach, which is based on a combined archival study of prayer intentions collected at the Oratory during the years 2010 and 2018. The ten observations made in the five places of prayer dedicated to Saint Brother André, the fifty interviews conducted with devotees and the study of about a hundred prayer intentions highlight the relationship of trust and friendship that people have with the Saint. This relationship is sustained by the perception of manifestations attributed to the divine, such as healing miracles, apparitions, and visions that, for the devotees, testify to the existence of an exchange of goods of charity between Heaven and Earth. This thesis shows the importance of the role of intercessor of Saint Brother André in the collective memory of Quebec, as evidenced by the historical relations that many families have developed with the Saint. Prayer is the first place of the encounter, the vehicle through which the devotees meet and communicate with Saint Brother André. As for devotional practices, they are expressed in many forms: relics, devotional spaces, statues, objects of piety, oil of Saint Joseph, images, worship, pilgrimages, etc. Since popular devotion is not controlled by the religious institution, it gives free rein to spontaneous religious expressions both in rituals and in votive writing.
