ACCURATE IDENTIFICATION OF PAVEMENT MATERIALS SUSCEPTIBLE TO MOISTURE DAMAGE WITH ADVANCED TEST METHODS AND MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES

Veeraragavan, Ram Kumar 13 May 2020 (has links)
Moisture induced damage in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixture is a prevalent problem all over the world. It is one of the leading causes of premature failures in asphalt pavements and a significant concern to the paving industry. It is, therefore, necessary to identify mixes that are susceptible to moisture damage during the mix design process. Extensive research has been carried out by several researchers over the years to develop a reliable and practical laboratory test procedure that can simulate field moisture damage conditions and that can make predictions that are likely to correlate to field performance. However, it is inferred from literature that no single laboratory test method can accurately predict the moisture induced damage performance HMA mixtures. The objectives of the present study are to: Develop a framework that considers different test methods to predict the moisture induced damage of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA); Develop a suitable machine learning method to achieve significantly high accuracy in predicting the moisture damage potential of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA); and develop a tool (App) for use by practicing engineers to identify HMA mixes that are likely to be susceptible to moisture induced damage. A total of 35 in-plant produced asphalt mixtures with known field performance were sampled, and compacted in the laboratory, and the compacted samples were subjected to mechanical tests before and after moisture conditioning with the Moisture Induced Stress Tester (MiST). In addition, the effluent from the MiST was checked for Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) content and gradation of dislodged aggregates. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the asphalt extracted from HMA samples was performed to observe changes in the functional groups before and after the MiST test. Statistical analysis showed that seismic modulus and indirect tensile strength were effective in distinguishing poor-performing mixes from the well-performing mixes. Principal component analysis was conducted on the test data, and a reduced set of dimensions that were capable of explaining significant variance in the data was identified. The significant test properties were used to develop machine-learning models with two supervised classification approaches. The k-nearest neighbor model was found to be very accurate in differentiating the mixes. The use of MiST conditioning, specified physical tests, and machine learning methods are recommended for the identification of moisture-susceptible hot mix asphalt. Contribution of this Work The major contribution of this work is the creation of a framework or a system that combines appropriate test methods and suitable machine learning models to achieve high accuracy (84%) in predicting the moisture damage potential of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). A secondary contribution is that this study, for the first time, combines the principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in the form of Machine Learning (ML), with the field of pavement performance, specifically for the evaluation of mixes that are subjected to moisture damage. Finally, the work provides users with a highly accurate ML model as well as an app, which can be used and further improved.

ASSESSING IMPACTS OF SOCIALLY-MIXED PUBLIC HOUSING REVITALIZATION ON CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Yu, Ellie January 2019 (has links)
The negative social and health impacts of living in areas of concentrated poverty have been demonstrated in numerous studies. Residents of old public housing estates experience higher levels of delinquent behaviour and health risks. As a remedy to the challenges associated with living in concentrated poverty, initiatives have been undertaken to ‘revitalize’ such neighbourhoods and at the same time change the population composition to achieve greater social mix. Socially-mixed public housing revitalization initiatives have been widely implemented in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia to improve the living conditions in public housing estates and the well-being of public housing residents. Despite its wide implementation, empirical results on the effect of such initiatives have been inconsistent. Further, very few research efforts have been dedicated to looking at outcomes of children and families. This dissertation consists of three unique mixed-method studies to investigate whether socially-mixed public housing revitalization, through the process of physical and social reconstruction, could improve the health and wellbeing of disadvantaged children and families. The first study is a quantitative analysis on the effect of the Regent Park Revitalization Project – a socially-mixed public housing revitalization initiative – on child mental health outcomes. The second study is a qualitative analysis to investigate the scholarly consensus on the purported mechanisms of socially-mixed public housing revitalization initiatives and their expert opinion on contextual factors and program components that trigger these mechanisms through stakeholder interviews. The third study is a realist synthesis that systematically reviewed the evidence regarding effects of socially-mixed public housing revitalization initiatives on the health and well-being of low-income children and families. Together, these three studies contributed new knowledge on how socially-mixed public housing revitalizations, through changes to the social and the physical environments of the neighbourhood, reduce health inequalities and improve the life trajectories of low-income children and families. / Dissertation / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Public housing developments built in the middle of the 20th century created large spatially-concentrated pockets of poverty in hundreds of cities worldwide. Over the past 20 years, cities in several countries have sought to redevelop, or revitalize public housing by demolishing the existing housing and building mixed income communities. These mixed communities are built to deliberately promote, sustain, and manage, social inclusion in a community of social integration for disadvantaged groups within society. The goal of this dissertation is to better understand how socially-mixed public housing revitalization operate and produce results for disadvantaged children and families. Three original studies were conducted, which provided unique empirical analyses on: 1) the impact of the Regent Park Revitalization Project on child mental health; 2) the scholarly consensus on purported mechanisms and program outcomes of socially-mixed public housing revitalization; and 3) an evidence synthesis to elucidate the mechanisms underlying socially-mixed public housing redevelopment.

Analýza komunikačního mixu společnosti Enterprise / Analysis of promotional mix of Enterprise

Demuthová, Denisa January 2017 (has links)
This Masters Thesis deals with an analysis of promotion mix of the company Enterprise. The objective of this thesis is to introduce company Enterprise Holdings along with its marketing and communication strategies. Furthermore, it includes a survey that was conducted in order to discover respondents awareness of Enterprise Rent A Car marketing activities and additional products. The recommendations are introduced on the basis of the surveys results. Moreover, in the theoretical part there are explained the basic marketing terms, e.g., integrated marketing communication, marketing mix, SWOT analysis and communication strategies. These strategies are crucial for understanding the thesis practical part. The marketing research and the methods of information collection are explained in the last chapter of the thesis theoretical part. The practical part is divided into three main chapters. The company Enterprise Holdings is introduced in the first chapter including its brands. There were conducted two analyses in the first chapter: a competitive analysis and SWOT analysis. The second and also the most elaborated part is focused on the marketing and communication strategies of the company. Additionally, the objectives of the entire company are described there as well as the goal achievement. The conclusion does not include only the survey evaluation but also the authors recommendations.
