En Modern Mobilapplikation, Från Idé Till Produkt / A Modern Mobile Application, From Idea to Product

Mobilapplikationer till de datorliknande mobiltelefonerna kallade Smartphones är i dagsläget en expanderande marknad. Att utveckla en bra mobilapplikation ställer dock höga krav på utvecklaren. I den här rapporten genomförs en litteraturstudie för att ta fram en Utvecklingsprocess för utveckling av en business-to-businessinriktad mobilapplikation. Syftet med Utvecklingsprocessen är att den ska kunna användas som ett hjälpmedel under utvecklandet. Processen riktar sig framförallt till studenter och företag som inte har någon erfarenhet av att utveckla business-to-businessinriktade mobilapplikationer. Denna process tillämpas sedan praktiskt genom att ta fram en idé till en applikation. Detta för att kunna utvärdera processen med avseende på fyra utvärderingskriterier: Användarvänlighet, Inblick i slutanvändarens behov och problem, fasernas nödvändighet och om den Uppfyller sina syften. Resultatet visar att Utvecklingsprocessen tar upp viktiga aspekter vid utveckling av en mobilapplikation. Det är dock viktigt att hela tiden följa upp arbetet och återkoppla till processen. Detta för att uppdatera och förbättra mobilapplikationen då utvecklaren med stor sannolikhet kommer hitta nya problem och bättre lösningar under utvecklingens gång. Rapporten rekommenderar slutligen att utvecklaren anpassar Utvecklingsprocessen efter sina egna förutsättningar för att uppnå bästa resultat.

A Mobile Application Development Strategy-Finding Model

Nowadays there are several different types of ways to build a mobile application, through web technologies, or through mobile manufacturers’ languages. Thus, in this study we focus on the three major mobile application development strategies: Native, Hybrid, and Web to Native. This plurality of solutions renders the selection of a mobile application development strategy complex. Hence, this study aims at understanding how developers deal with the selection of a mobile development approach. This thesis analyses their behaviour thanks to a survey that collects crucial information about developers searching habits. The latter analysis concludes that general guidelines are not sufficient to provide a tailored and accurate selection of mobile application development approach. Therefore, this study aims at improving the activity of finding a mobile application development strategy. In addition to this, the past and current states of the subject are discussed in a critical manner, which therefore results in using an analytical research approach. Knowing the aforementioned, a design science research approach is used to outline the iteration processes that occurred during this study. Each step of the study is thoroughly treated thanks to a tailored design cycle. Consequently, a mobile development strategy-finding model has been built by combining literature review and survey’s results. This model highlights the importance of the criteria extracted from the literature review and the survey. To support and allow constant self-evolution of the model, a suggestion of web platform is proposed. Finally, this model has been compared with a Titanium model. The result of this comparison outlines that the model created in this study seems more usable because it comprises the three major mobile application development strategies whereas the Titanium model only focuses in native solutions and its own hybrid solution. Moreover, the Titanium model focuses on selling its product rather than showing why it is better than the other mobile application development strategies.

System Matylda was created in order to provide a database and web interface which allows sorting, filtering and comparing of products from food and drugstore industry. The goal of this thesis is to create a user friendly mobile application for this system. The application will be available for all today's major mobile platforms. The final application uses main features of the existing web application and also takes advantage of capabilities of modern mobile devices such as maps and user location. Some of the main features are searching for detailed product information, browsing discount leaflets, comparing discounts, creating shopping lists, authentication and more. Smartphone Apps on the Mobile Web: An Exploratory Case Study of Business Models

The purpose of this research is to explore the business strategies of a firm seeking to develop and profitably market a mobile smartphone application to understand how small, digital entrepreneurships may build sustainable business models given substantial market barriers. Through a detailed examination of one firm’s process to try to commercialize their mobile app, we identify various business model decisions and marketing strategy approaches that hindered the company’s efforts. The case study describes two distinctly different business models adopted in succession, as well as the various adjustments the firm makes to its target market, distribution and pricing approach that led to their current strategy. This research looks closely at business-to-business-to-consumer distribution arrangement for mobile apps and in doing so challenges the rising positive bias that exists for the app store as the dominant actor in the mobile value chain. For practice, this paper suggests unanticipated hurdles small digital entrepreneurs may face if they rely heavily on mobile advertising and the app store to launch and sustain their business.

Developing rich Web applications can be a complex job - especially when it comes to mobile device support. Web-based environments such as Lively Webwerkstatt can help developers implement such applications by making the development process more direct and interactive. Further the process of developing software is collaborative which creates the need that the development environment offers collaboration facilities. This report describes extensions of the webbased development environment Lively Webwerkstatt such that it can be used in a mobile environment. The extensions are collaboration mechanisms, user interface adaptations but as well event processing and performance measuring on mobile devices. / Vielseitige Webanwendungen zu entwickeln kann eine komplexe Aufgabe sein - besonders wenn es die Unterstützung mobiler Geräte betrifft. Webbasierte Umgebungen wie Lively Kernel können Entwicklern helfen Webanwendungen zu entwickeln, indem sie den Entwicklungsprozess direkter und interaktiver gestalten. Zudem sind Entwicklungsprozesse von Software kollaborativ, d.h. Enwicklungsumgebungen müssen so gestaltet sein, dass sie mit kollaborativen Elementen zu unterstützen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt die Erweiterungen der webbasierten Entwicklungsumgebung Lively Webwerkstatt, so dass diese in einer mobilen Umgebung genutzt werden kann. Application that combines crowdsourcing and gamification elements should be usable by as many passengers as possible, considering all the different smartphones available on the market and people with disabilities. Thus, most popular platforms for cross-platform mobile application development should be compared in order to choose the appropriate one for this project. Finally, application prototype should be further tested to gather more feedback about design and concept for improvements and future studies.  Such solution is not meant to replace current methods of information gathering, but instead should be one of the available tools.

Survey on the state of cross-platform mobile development frameworks

Mobile application development has grown in the past few years, and instead of native development, some developers have moved to a new strategy; cross-platform mobile development using frameworks. There are many frameworks that all have their use case, but whether or not these frameworks are ready to be used in production applications is hard to decide on . This research aims to find the strengths and weaknesses of cross-platform mobile development frameworks, and how they can be improved to better suit the needs of developers. To gather data in this topic a survey was created to analyze developer experiences on frameworks in key areas such as front-end design, platform maturity and more. The results reveal that there are many areas that can be improved, but frameworks are a great tool for smaller teams and are being used extensively already to create applications for multiple platforms.

An automated validation of a cleared-out storage unit during move-out : A RoomPlan solution integrated with image classification

The efficient management of storage units requires a reliable and streamlined move-out process. Manual validation methods are resource intensive. Therefore, the task is to introduce an automated approach that capitalises on modern smartphone capabilities to improve the move-out validation process. Hence, the purpose of this thesis project. The proposed solution is a Proof of Concept (POC) application that utilises the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor and camera of a modern iPhone. This is performed through RoomPlan, a framework developed for real-time, indoor room scanning. It generates a 3D model of the room with its key characteristics. Moreover, to increase the number detectable object categories, the solution is integrated with the image classifier Tiny YOLOv3. The solution is evaluated through a quantitative evaluation in a storage unit. It shows that the application can validate whether the storage unit is empty or not in all the completed scans. However, an improvement of the object detecition is needed for the solution to work in a commercial case. Therefore, further work includes investigation of the possibilities to expand the object categories within the image classifier or creating a similar detection pipeline as RoomPlan adjusted for this specific case. The usage of LiDAR sensors indicated to be a stable object detector and a successful tool for the assignment. In contrast, the image classifier had lower detection accuracy in the storage unit.
