Layered Lanthanide Coinage-Metal Diarsenides: Syntheses, Commensurately and Incommensurately Modulated Structures, Electric and Magnetic Properties: Layered Lanthanide Coinage-Metal Diarsenides: Syntheses, Commensurately and Incommensurately Modulated Structures, Electric and Magnetic Properties

Rutzinger, Dieter 13 November 2009 (has links)
The crystal structures of the LnAgAs2 and LnAuAs2 compounds were reinvestigated by single-crystal diffraction experiments. Contrary to the respective copper compounds, no stuffed variant of the HfCuSi2 type was found. For CeAuAs2, GdAuAs2 and TbAuAs2, a slight under-occupation of the gold position was determined, the other compounds crystallize in a 1:1:2 ratio. Additionally, LaCuAs2 was synthesized for the first time in a 1:1:2 ratio. Due to the fact that imaging plate diffraction systems were used instead of four-circle diffractometers, satellite reflections could be observed for most of the LnCuAs2 compounds (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Ho), CeAuAs2, GdAuAs2 and TbAuAs2. Structure models of GdCuAs2, CeAuAs2, GdAuAs2 and TbAuAs2 were developed, rod and layer groups of the respective structural motives were determined and approximants were presented.

VELOCITY ERROR ANALYSIS OF COHERENT AND NON-COHERENT TRANSPONDING TRACTORY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

Chengfang, Huang 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 22-25, 2001 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / This paper introduces two transponders combining coherent transponding and non-coherent transponding for multistatic trajectory measurement system and carrier Doppler frequency extraction principle, then derives each model of the velocity error for noise. The expressions of velocity error resulted by noise in coherent, IF-modulated and IF transform transponding configurations are also described. The conclusion is drawn: the system velocity error for noise is related to the transponder transponding configuration. And, the velocity error in coherent, IF-modulated and IF transform transponding configurations are compared in this paper.

The electrodeposition and characterisation of compositionally modulated tin-cobalt alloy coatings as lead-free plain bearing material

Zhang, Yi January 2008 (has links)
Traditionally, lead-based bearing overlays dominate the commercial automotive market and it has been proven that an excellent combination of properties can be attained through their use. However, lead is a toxic metal and a cumulative poison in humans. According to the European Union End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive proposed in 1997, vehicles that registered in'all the member states after 1st July 2003 should contain no lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium. In this study, a new sulphate-gluconate electrolyte was used to produce multilayer SnCo coatings, aimed at a lead-free overlay for future market use. Tin-cobalt compositionally modulated alloy (CMA) coatings produced from sulphategluconate electrolytes have been previously examined as a potential replacement for lead-free bearing overlays [1]. However, some obstacles may exist which limit their potential use on an industrial scale. For example, long electroplating times are required to produce a thick coating which is very undesirable from an industrial viewpoint, and also the possible elemental interdiffusion occurring in the coating system under engine operating temperatures could rapidly deteriorate the coating properties. In addition, there is an increasing demand from automotive industry to further improve bearing overlay properties, for example for high performance and high compression ratio engines.

CHARACTERIZATION OF CHARGE INJECTION PROCESSES OF THIN FILMS ON INDIUM TIN OXIDE ELECTRODES USING A NOVEL SPECTROELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUE: POTENTIAL-MODULATED ATTENUATED TOTAL REFLECTANCE SPECTROSCOPY

Araci, Zeynep January 2010 (has links)
Understanding interfacial charge injection processes is one of the key factors needed for development of efficient organic electronic devices, such as biosensors and energy conversion systems, since these processes control the electrical characteristics of these devices. Spectroelectrochemical characterization of electron transfer processes occurring at the electrode - electroactive thin film interface has been evaluated to improve our understanding of charge transfer kinetics using a novel form of electroreflectance spectroscopy, potential-modulated attenuated total reflectance (PM-ATR), which makes it possible to sensitively monitor spectroscopic changes in thin films as a function of applied potential.PM-ATR was used to evaluate three different redox-active films deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes to investigate: i) the orientation dependence of charge transfer rates of thin films of biomolecules, ii) surface treatment and modification effects on charge transfer kinetics of conducting polymers and, iii) estimation of rates of electron injection and conduction band edge of semiconductor nanocrystalline materials.First, Prussian blue film as a model system was used successfully to examine the PM-ATR technique for determination of the charge transfer rate constant between ITO and a molecular film.Second, an anisotropic and redox active protein film, cytochrome c, was used to probe charge transfer rates with respect to molecular orientation. The electron transfer rate measured using TM polarized light was four-fold greater than that measured using TE polarized light. These data are the first to correlate a distribution of molecular orientations with a distribution of electron transfer rates in a redox-active molecular film.Third, the effects of ITO surface treatment and modification on charge transfer kinetics on a conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS), were studied. The apparent interfacial charge transfer rate constant for PEDOT/PSS on ITO has been reported for the first time which cannot be measured otherwise with conventional electrochemistry due to high non-Faradaic background of PEDOT/PSS films.Fourth, PM-ATR enabled characterization of reversible redox processes between submonolayer coverages of surface-tethered, CdSe nanocrystals and ITO for the first time. Optically determined onset potentials for electron injection were used for estimation for the conduction band and valance band energies (ECB and EVB, respectively).

New statistical methods to derive functional connectivity from multiple spike trains

Masud, Mohammad Shahed January 2011 (has links)
Analysis of functional connectivity of simultaneously recorded multiple spike trains is one of the major issues in the neuroscience. The progress of the statistical methods to the analysis of functional connectivity of multiple spike trains is relatively slow. In this thesis two statistical techniques are presented to the analysis of functional connectivity of multiple spike trains. The first method is known as the modified correlation grid (MCG). This method is based on the calculation of cross-correlation function of all possible pair-wise spike trains. The second technique is known as the Cox method. This method is based on the modulated renewal process (MRP). The original paper on the application of the Cox method (Borisyuk et al., 1985) to neuroscience data was used to analyse only pairs and triplets of spike trains. This method is further developed in this thesis to support simultaneously recorded of any possible set of multiple spike trains. A probabilistic model is developed to test the Cox method. This probabilistic model is based on the MRP. Due to the common probabilistic basis of the probabilistic model and the Cox method, the probabilistic model is a convenient technique to test the Cox method. A new technique based on a pair-wise analysis of Cox method known as the Cox metric is presented to find the groups of coupled spike trains. Another new technique known as motif analysis is introduced which is useful in identifying interconnections among the spike trains. This technique is based on the triplet-wise analysis of the Cox method. All these methods are applied to several sets of spike trains generated by the Enhanced Leaky and Integrate Fire (ELIF) model. The results suggest that these methods are successful for analysing functional connectivity of simultaneously recorded multiple spike trains. These methods are also applied to an experimental data recorded from cat’s visual cortex. The connection matrix derived from the experimental data by the Cox method is further applied to the graph theoretical methods.

Avaliação da ototoxicidade em pacientes portadores de meduloblastoma submetidos à radioterapia com reforço de dose com intensidade modulada do feixe (IMRT) / Ototoxicity evaluation in medulloblastoma patients submitted to boost radiotherapy with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)

Vieira, Wilson Albieri 01 December 2011 (has links)
The combination of radiation therapy and cisplatin chemotherapy for the treatment of medulloblastoma is a known cause of important ototoxicity. With the introduction of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), it became possible to deliver less radiation to the auditory apparatus. PURPOSE: To determine if boost radiotherapy with IMRT can achieve a lower rate of hearing loss and if theres a cutoff dose for it. Also, to analyze whether the auditory apparatus volume contoured in inverse planning influences the outcome. METHODS: Forty-one pediatric medulloblastoma patients (median age, 10 years) with normal hearing at the time of radiation with IMRT were retrospectively evaluated. The last audiogram and follow-up from the completion of radiation were considered. Hearing function was graded on a scale 0 to 4 according to Pediatric Oncology groups toxicity criteria. Minimum, maximum, mean and median doses to the inner ear and its volume contoured in IMRT planning, as well the cisplatin dose were recorded and correlated with hearing function. Univariate and multivariate data analysis were performed. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 41 months (range 12.8-71.0 months) for audiometric evaluation and 44 months (range 14-72 months) for survival. Median doses for minimum, maximum, mean and median in the inner ear were respectively: 3785 (range, 589.4 to 4758.2), 4832.5 (range 3724 to 5447.9), 4366.5 (range 2808.5 to 5097,3) and 4360,5 (range 2878 to 5031,1). Seven patients (17%) have experienced Grade 3 or 4 hearing loss. Univariate analysis showed no difference among the variables with statistical significance, except for cisplatin dose (P < 0.03). In multivariate analysis with logistic regression, median dose in inner ear was a significant factor for hearing loss grade 3 or 4 (P < 0,01), meanwhile cisplatin dose had a trend to hearing loss grade 3 or 4 (P = 0.075). There was no relationship between the auditory apparatus volume contoured in planning and hearing loss. Grade 3 or 4 hearing loss were uncommon with median dose to the inner ear bellow 42 Gy (P = 0.063) and cisplatin dose less than 375 mg/m² (P < 0.01). None of the patients who received carboplatin in lieu of cisplatin had severe hearing loss. There was no statistically significant association between ototoxicity and the variables, when these patients were excluded from the analysis. Four patients died and two have recurred at the time of the study with a 90% overall survival rate and 85% disease free survival in 44 months. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings shows that IMRT treatment leads to a low rate of serious hearing loss even with a longer follow-up, which is consistent with others trials. We believe that is safe to contour only the cochlea and that a median dose to it should be kept below 42Gy. Cisplatin chemotherapy continues to have an important role in treatment, however doses should not exceed 375 mg/m². Survival rates were impressing in this trial given the fact that 21 (51.2%) patients were classified as high risk

Estudo de modelos para sistemas modulados magnéticos e estruturais / Study designs for systems and magnetic modulated and structurals

Tragtenberg, Marcelo Henrique Romano 26 July 1993 (has links)
We studied the behavior of models for magnetically and structurally modulated systems. The first part of this work is dedicated to the study of the Ising model with competing interactions on a Bethe lattice, in the infinite coordination limit, in a magnetic field. We focused our attention on the behavior of the commensurate phases in the presence of a field. We obtained various T H phase diagrams using numerical methods far more efficient than simple iteration of the mapping associated to the model. In the second part we studied the FrenkelKontorova model with first and second harmonics in the external potential. We found and investigated the second order transitions within the commensurate phases of odd periodicity. These transitions, called symmetricasymmetric transitions, are related to the breaking of reflection symmetry which occurs at high potentials.

Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of [(SnSe)1+δ]m(MoSe2)n and New Rare Earth (LaSe1-x)1.17(VSe2-y)n (n = 2-4) and [(EuSe)1+δ]1(VSe2)n (n = 1-3) Ferecrystal Systems

Gunning, Noel 18 August 2015 (has links)
Solid state synthesis of layered, rotationally disordered intergrowths consisting of rock salt (MX) and hexagonal (TX2) constituents in various sequences [(MX)1+δ]m[TX2]n is carried out by developing structural and compositional prototypes of the desired product, using fine control of the elemental reactants and then annealing at low temperature to facilitate self-assembly. (M = Sn, La, Eu; T = V, Mo.) The remarkable rotational disorder in these systems - in contrast to traditional misfits - and their proven applications in thermal, electrical and thermoelectric disciplines make them a useful group of materials for demonstrating control of reaction pathways of solid state reactions using low temperatures and short times. The synthesized materials are structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). Electrical characterization is carried out on patterned samples using the Van der Pauw method of resistivity and the Hall effect method. Composition of the samples is determined using wavelength dispersive electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Time domain thermoreflectance is used to determine the cross plane thermal conductivity. The family of [(SnSe)1.05]m(MoSe2)n (m = n = 1, 2, 3, 4), which possess the same composition but different unit cell thicknesses, shows that there is no correlation between c-axis unit cell thickness and cross plane thermal conductivity. The family of structural isomers [(SnSe)1.05]4[MoSe2]4, [(SnSe)1.05]3[MoSe2]3[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]1, [(SnSe)1.05]3[MoSe2]2[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]2, [(SnSe)1.05]2[MoSe2]3[(SnSe)1.05]2[MoSe2]1,[(SnSe)1.05]2[MoSe2]1[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]2[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]1 and [(SnSe)1.05]2[MoSe2]2[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]1[(SnSe)1.05]1[MoSe2]1 have the same c-axis lattice thickness and absolute composition but have different numbers of [(SnSe)1.05]/[MoSe2] interfaces. Thermal conductivity studies carried out on these showed no correlation with the interface density. (LaSe1-x)1.17(VSe2-y)n (n = 2, 3, 4) feature a family of compounds that self-assemble at higher than usual temperatures. They form non-stoichiometric moieties with unique structural proclivities including La vacancies and V interstitials compared to other ferecrystals or previous misfits. The designable electrical properties show evidence of charge transfer. (EuSe)1+δ(VSe2)n (n = 1, 2, 3) is a family of materials that complements the investigation of Ln-based ferecrystals. They show evidence of multiple M oxidation states. These compounds highlight the use of rational design of structure and composition to tune properties.
