The prevention of deaths in police cells

Makgopa, Lazarus 06 1900 (has links)
The research question of this study is to determine what circumstances and conditions contribute to deaths in police cells. The study was undertaken in order to establish the causes of deaths in police cells and the factors which contribute thereto, as well as to determine the best international practices to prevent deaths in police cells. The literature was reviewed in order to establish the extent to which this phenomenon has been researched in South Africa and in other countries and to determine the regulatory framework related thereto. The researcher had collected data from the dockets relating to deaths in police cells which were kept at the IPID provincial offices in Gauteng and Limpopo. The data were collected by using the docket analysis schedule and were categorised into themes during the analysis process. Four cause of deaths in police cells were identified, namely, suicide, natural causes, assault by fellow detainees and injuries which were sustained prior to detention. Suicide is the leading cause of deaths. The second leading causes of deaths in police cells are natural causes and assault by fellow detainees. Deaths as a result of injuries sustained prior to detention came third. The most common ligatures which were used to commit suicide are shoe-laces, belts and strips torn from clothing and bedding items. The preferred ligature points are the burglar proof bars on cell windows. Booted feet and hands were the most common instruments used to inflict fatal injuries on the detainees. It was also found that police officials are generally not complying fully with the standing orders which regulate the management of people who are detained in police cells. The failure of police officials to comply fully with the standing orders on custody in police cells contributed to the deaths of detainees in police cells. Recommendations are made to prevent the deaths of detainees in police cells. / Police Practice / M. Tech. (Policing)

An Experimental Study of Submerged Entry Nozzles (SEN) Focusing on Decarburization and Clogging

Memarpour, Arashk January 2011 (has links)
The submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is used to transport the molten steel from a tundish to a mould. The main purpose of its usage is to prevent oxygen and nitrogen pick-up by molten steel from the gas. Furthermore, to achieve the desired flow conditions in the mould. Therefore, the SEN can be considered as a vital factor for a stable casting process and the steel quality. In addition, the steelmaking processes occur at high temperatures around 1873 K, so the interaction between the refractory materials of the SEN and molten steel is unavoidable. Therefore, the knowledge of the SEN behaviors during preheating and casting processes is necessary for the design of the steelmaking processes The internal surfaces of modern SENs are coated with a glass/silicon powder layer to prevent the SEN graphite oxidation during preheating. The effects of the interaction between the coating layer and the SEN base refractory materials on clogging were studied. A large number of accretion samples formed inside alumina-graphite clogged SENs were examined using FEG-SEM-EDS and Feature analysis. The internal coated SENs were used for continuous casting of stainless steel grades alloyed with Rare Earth Metals (REM). The post-mortem study results clearly revealed the formation of a multi-layer accretion. A harmful effect of the SENs decarburization on the accretion thickness was also indicated. In addition, the results indicated a penetration of the formed alkaline-rich glaze into the alumina-graphite base refractory. More specifically, the alkaline-rich glaze reacts with graphite to form a carbon monoxide gas. Thereafter, dissociation of CO at the interface between SEN and molten metal takes place. This leads to reoxidation of dissolved alloying elements such as REM (Rare Earth Metal). This reoxidation forms the “In Situ” REM oxides at the interface between the SEN and the REM alloyed molten steel. Also, the interaction of the penetrated glaze with alumina in the SEN base refractory materials leads to the formation of a high-viscous alumina-rich glaze during the SEN preheating process. This, in turn, creates a very uneven surface at the SEN internal surface. Furthermore, these uneven areas react with dissolved REM in molten steel to form REM aluminates, REM silicates and REM alumina-silicates. The formation of the large “in-situ” REM oxides and the reaction of the REM alloying elements with the previously mentioned SEN´s uneven areas may provide a large REM-rich surface in contact with the primary inclusions in molten steel. This may facilitate the attraction and agglomeration of the primary REM oxide inclusions on the SEN internal surface and thereafter the clogging. The study revealed the disadvantages of the glass/silicon powder coating applications and the SEN decarburization. The decarburization behaviors of Al2O3-C, ZrO2-C and MgO-C refractory materials from a commercial Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN), were also investigated for different gas atmospheres consisting of CO2, O2 and Ar. The gas ratio values were kept the same as it is in a propane combustion flue gas at different Air-Fuel-Ratio (AFR) values for both Air-Fuel and Oxygen-Fuel combustion systems. Laboratory experiments were carried out under nonisothermal conditions followed by isothermal heating. The decarburization ratio (α) values of all three refractory types were determined by measuring the real time weight losses of the samples. The results showed the higher decarburization ratio (α) values increasing for MgO-C refractory when changing the Air-Fuel combustion to Oxygen-Fuel combustion at the same AFR value. It substantiates the SEN preheating advantage at higher temperatures for shorter holding times compared to heating at lower temperatures during longer holding times for Al2O3-C samples. Diffusion models were proposed for estimation of the decarburization rate of an Al2O3-C refractory in the SEN. Two different methods were studied to prevent the SEN decarburization during preheating: The effect of an ZrSi2 antioxidant and the coexistence of an antioxidant additive and a (4B2O3 ·BaO) glass powder on carbon oxidation for non-isothermal and isothermal heating conditions in a controlled atmosphere. The coexistence of 8 wt% ZrSi2 and 15 wt% (4B2O3 ·BaO) glass powder of the total alumina-graphite refractory base materials, presented the most effective resistance to carbon oxidation. The 121% volume expansion due to the Zircon formation during heating and filling up the open pores by a (4B2O3 ·BaO) glaze during the green body sintering led to an excellent carbon oxidation resistance. The effects of the plasma spray-PVD coating of the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) powder on the carbon oxidation of the Al2O3-C coated samples were investigated. Trials were performed at non-isothermal heating conditions in a controlled atmosphere. Also, the applied temperature profile for the laboratory trials were defined based on the industrial preheating trials. The controlled atmospheres consisted of CO2, O2 and Ar. The thicknesses of the decarburized layers were measured and examined using light optic microscopy, FEG-SEM and EDS. A 250-290 μm YSZ coating is suggested to be an appropriate coating, as it provides both an even surface as well as prevention of the decarburization even during heating in air. In addition, the interactions between the YSZ coated alumina-graphite refractory base materials in contact with a cerium alloyed molten stainless steel were surveyed. The YSZ coating provided a total prevention of the alumina reduction by cerium. Therefore, the prevention of the first clogging product formed on the surface of the SEN refractory base materials. Therefore, the YSZ plasma-PVD coating can be recommended for coating of the hot surface of the commercial SENs. /
QC 20111014

Posmrtná cesta v době Válčících států a Han na základě písemných a archeologických pramenů / Journey to the otherworld in the Warring States and Han periods as reflected in written and archaeological sources

Solanič, Dmitrij January 2019 (has links)
1 Abstract The purpose of this work is to evaluate the post-mortem journey of the soul theory in the Warring States and early Han dynasty periods. Since this theory is presented by it's propoents as an alternative to the so-called "happy-home" theory, before starting his own analysis the author first introduces both theories citing the main arguments of their proponents. Author's own analysis consists of two parts: interpretation of archeological sources consisting of four tombs and translations of passages from textual sources connected to burial ritual dating to said period. Throughout the work, the author views all sources from the standpoint of both theories and evaluates their applicability of said theories to those sources. Through his own analysis, the author reaches the conclusion that neither the theory of post-portem journey, not the "happy-home" theory prove suitable when it comes to explaining the presence burial articles in tombs of said period and their theses do not seem to be reflected in the period's literature. The author considers the role that the deceased played in their society to be a better key to explaining burial articles than either of the theories concerning what the ancient people thought followed after death. Keywords: journey, post-mortem journey, "happy home", afterlife,...

Chagas, Caio José Ribeiro January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: The present research has as main objective to generate a registry and an analysis of the creative process of the alpha version of the indie game Lux Ex, that was produced almost entirely by a single developer, in an authorial way and adopting the model of production independently known as the "Lone Wolf Developer". Such a model of production has particularities that can add to the final product a more authorial character, because all its stages of realization are marked by a creative process not linear and intertwined with a highly interdisciplinary production. Thus, the game presents a complex network of meanings to express concepts and ideas emerging from the subjectivity of its creator, drawing on already established symbolic systems. The object of analysis of the dissertation presented here is the complete creative process of an independent digital game / Mestre

Insect olfaction as an information filter for chemo-analytical applications

Paczkowski, Sebastian 29 May 2013 (has links)

Sudden and unexpected deaths in adults : an investigation of cases reported to Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services from January 2001 - December 2005

Tiemensma, Marianne 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMed (Pathology. Forensic Medicine))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Bibliography / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background - The workload of the forensic pathologist and Forensic Pathology Services staff is increased by the referral of potentially unnecessary natural cases to the Forensic Pathology Services. The primary aims of the medico-legal autopsy are limited to establishing a cause of death in presumed unnatural cases, and to exclude criminality or negligence. Objective – To determine the final outcomes of forensic post-mortem examinations in “sudden and unexpected” adult deaths over a 5 year period. Methods - An observational, retrospective, descriptive study was conducted. ”Sudden and unexpected” adult deaths referred to Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2005 were reviewed. Data was collected from the autopsy reports, contemporaneous notes and hospital records. Findings – A total of 816 adult cases of sudden and unexpected death were referred to Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Services over the 5 year period studied. Complete autopsies had been performed in 74% (601/816) of cases. The presumed manner of death was natural in 79 % of cases, and an increase in the number of natural cases autopsied per year was noted over the 5-year study period. Diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous systems were responsible for the majority of natural deaths. Infectious diseases were responsible for most deaths in the youngest age group studied (18-29 years). Acute alcohol poisoning was responsible for the deaths of 35 (6%) cases, with an average blood alcohol concentration of 0.38g/100mL in these cases. Eight deaths were drug-/substance related. Waiting times for blood alcohol and toxicology results increased over the 5-year study period. No cause of death was found in 10.6% of cases. Conclusions -The questionnaire and interviewing structure could possibly be improved in order to obtain better pre-autopsy information and to reduce the number of “unnecessary” medicolegal autopsies, thereby reducing the burden of cost on the Forensic Pathology Services. Metodes – ‘n Observasionele, retrospektiewe, beskrywende studie is uitgevoer. Agt sterftes was dwelm-/middelverwant.

Analysis of Glycerophospholipids and Sphingolipids in Murine Brain Using Liquid Chromatography – Electrospray Ionization - Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization – Imaging Mass Spectrometry

Nguyen, Thao January 2017 (has links)
Mass spectrometry is an indispensable tool in lipidomics research. Current advances and progress in the technology of mass spectrometry have allowed for the identification, quantification and characterization of lipid molecular species to further our understanding of their biological roles. In this thesis, I assessed the influence post-mortem times have on quantitative lipidomics. Using liquid chromatography - electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESIMS/MS) on a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer and multiple-reaction-monitoring (MRM) mode, the glycerophosphocholine (GPC) metabolites and second messengers in the hippocampus of N3 & N4 C57BL/6 x 129/SV were profiled at various post-mortem interval (PMI). I found that disruption to the GPC metabolite and second messengers lipidome occured as early as 1 hour postmortem and fluctuate up till at least 12 hours post-mortem. Therefore, PMI is a variable in lipidomic studies that must be controlled for, and brain samples which are collected with PMI variations must be matched to avoid misinterpretation. Subsequently, I developed a working protocol to visualize the location and distribution of different classes of glycerophospholipids, ceramides, and sphingomyelin in whole mouse brain sections. This visualization technique is novel because it does not require tissue staining or immunohistochemistry; instead, it was performed using an atmospheric-pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-MALDI) source coupled to an orbitrap mass spectrometer. As part of this lipid visualization technique, I also developed a protocol for sublimation as a simple, effective and reproducible matrix application method for brain tissue. The lipid-compatible matrix, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), was assessed and optimized for imaging lipid targets. The high mass-resolution and accuracy characteristics of the orbitrap mass spectrometer and its capability to perform tandem mass spectrometry via high-collision dissociation allowed for the identification of approximately 200 different lipid species directly from brain tissue using the visualization technique I developed. Altogether, the work in this thesis has showed that post-mortem changes in the lipidome are quantifiable and has provided a novel avenue to further assess these changes by means of imaging mass spectrometry.

The post-mortem as a source of information in the investigation of murder

Bila, Hlengani Phanuel 05 1900 (has links)
The research is concerned with how the post-mortem report can be used as a source of information in the investigation of murder cases to identify crime, individual crimes and trace suspects, etc. The understanding of the post-mortem report, and the information which can be obtained from it, will assist the police investigators to handle murder cases in a professional way. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the existing manner in which police investigators use post-mortem reports in their investigations, with the intention of determining its strengths and weaknesses, and considering how the usage can be improved. Secondly, the researcher wanted to explore how investigators use postmortem reports as a source of information in their investigations. To accomplish this, the researcher perused international and national literature in an attempt to explore the field. The researcher wanted to apply the new research knowledge in order to develop good practice in the field. This has been done by recommending new procedures to enhance performance and to improve the conviction rate in court cases. / Police Practice / M.Tech. (Forensic Investigation)
