Asset ownership as a framework to produce measures of wealth vulnerability resistant: the case of Albania

CANOVA, LUCIANO 08 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the different possibilities of measuring indicators of socio-economic status at the household's level. These indicators should be able to take account of the dimensions of uncertainty and risk, thus catching the ability of people of coping with negative economic shocks. The construction of such indicators asset-based is focused on the Albanian context.

The Planning OLAP Model

Jaecksch, Bernhard, Lehner, Wolfgang 26 January 2023 (has links)
A wealth of multidimensional OLAP models has been suggested in the past, tackling various problems of modeling multidimensional data. However, all of these models focus on navigational and query operators for grouping, selection and aggregation. We argue that planning functionality is, next to reporting and analysis, an important part of OLAP in many businesses and as such should be represented as part of a multidimensional model. Navigational operators are not enough for planning, instead new factual data is created or existing data is changed. To our knowledge we are the first to suggest a multidimensional model with support for planning. Because the main data entities of a typical multidimensional model are used both by planning and reporting, we concentrate on the extension of an existing model, where we add a set of novel operators that support an extensive set of typical planning functions.

HEALTH SYSTEM REFORMS AND MEDICAL POVERTY TRAP IN RURAL CHINA

HAN, WEI 09 March 2012 (has links)
The thesis consists three chapters. The first one, a critical review, aims at explaining why health care system reform in China does not work as expected. By comparing the case of China with the cases of Mexico and Vietnam, we try to find the explanation from the policy design and evaluation methodology. The second chapter proposes to combine catastrophic health expenditure literature with multidimensional poverty literature to analyze the impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure on overall well-being. Our study suggests that, in the rural area of developing countries, especially where health care system is in its infancy, households may be driven into poverty by health-related deprivation more than monetary deprivation. Therefore, policy-makers should evaluate and design welfare policy from a broader perspective other than only focusing on addressing the monetary poverty. The last chapter attempts to evaluate the impacts of a block-randomized social experiment in rural China, which implemented the provider payment intervention on outpatient services. Difference-in-difference methods are employed to estimate the average treatment effect with a set of outcome variables related to out-of-pocket health expenditure. We find that the poor may benefit more from the interventions.

A Decathlon in Multidimensional Modeling: Open Issues and Some Solutions

Hümmer, W., Lehner, W., Bauer, A., Schlesinger, L. 12 January 2023 (has links)
The concept of multidimensional modeling has proven extremely successful in the area of Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) as one of many applications running on top of a data warehouse installation. Although many different modeling techniques expressed in extended multidimensional data models were proposed in the recent past, we feel that many hot issues are not properly reflected. In this paper we address ten common problems reaching from defects within dimensional structures over multidimensional structures to new analytical requirements and more.

RiTE: Providing On-Demand Data for Right-Time Data Warehousing

Lehner, Wolfgang, Thomsen, Christian, Bach Pedersen, Torben 20 June 2022 (has links)
Data warehouses (DWs) have traditionally been loaded with data at regular time intervals, e.g., monthly, weekly, or daily, using fast bulk loading techniques. Recently, the trend is to insert all (or only some) new source data very quickly into DWs, called near-realtime DWs (right-time DWs). This is done using regular INSERT statements, resulting in too low insert speeds. There is thus a great need for a solution that makes inserted data available quickly, while still providing bulk-load insert speeds. This paper presents RiTE ('Right-Time ETL'), a middleware system that provides exactly that. A data producer (ETL) can insert data that becomes available to data consumers on demand. RiTE includes an innovative main-memory based catalyst that provides fast storage and offers concurrency control. A number of policies controlling the bulk movement of data based on user requirements for persistency, availability, freshness, etc. are supported. The system works transparently to both producer and consumers. The system is integrated with an open source DBMS, and experiments show that it provides 'the best of both worlds', i.e., INSERT-like data availability, but with bulk-load speeds (up to 10 times faster).
