Effects of using presentation formats that accommodate the learner's multiple intelligences on the learning of freshman college chemistry concepts

Brown Wright, Gloria Aileen 13 April 2012 (has links)
Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences identifies linguistic, spatial and logical-mathematical intelligences as necessary for learning in the physical sciences. He has identified nine intelligences which all persons possess to varying degrees, and says that learning is most effective when learners receive information in formats that correspond to their intelligence strengths. This research investigated the importance of the multiple intelligences of students in first-year college chemistry to the learning of chemistry concepts. At three pre-selected intervals during the first-semester course each participant received a tutorial on a chemistry topic, each time in a format corresponding to a different one of the three intelligences, just before the concept was introduced by the class lecturer. At the end of the experiment all subjects had experienced each of the three topics once and each format once, after which they were administered a validated instrument to measure their relative strengths in these three intelligences. The difference between a pre- and post-tutorial quiz administered on each occasion was used as a measure of learning. Most subjects were found to have similar strengths in the three intelligences and to benefit from the tutorials regardless of format. Where a difference in the extent of benefit occurred the difference was related to the chemistry concept. Data which indicate that students' preferences support these findings are also included and recommendations for extending this research to other intelligences are made. / text

Recognition of cognitive profile: a computational approach supported by multiple intelligence theory.

Ferreira, Fabiano Rodrigues 02 October 2015 (has links)
Brazils Information Technology area suffers a latent problem with the lack of planning and constant projects delays, determining for its professionals a highly demotivating work environment. It is assumed that a thing that could corroborate to this problem would be the deficient educational background of individuals who work in this segment, especially those related to management positions activities. According to theorists such as Edgard Morin, concerning both basic education, high school or college level, educational aspects can be considered deficient precisely why, when targeting a divided knowledge apprenticeship, they promote alienation of the individual, eliminating their creative and reflective capacity. It would be interesting, therefore, that a person cognitive ability evaluation considers many kinds of knowledge in instead of few ones. The theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner meets this need. According to the author, an individual intelligence should be measured over a range of nine spectra: Linguistic, Musical, Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist and Existential. In this way, this thesis discusses a computational methodology for classification and discovery of patterns in individuals, considering both undergraduate students or graduated professionals in a specific area. In addition to the methodology, a case study was proposed, considering computer-related higher education courses in Brazil.

Relação entre características empreendedoras e múltiplas inteligências: um estudo com contadores de Minas Gerais / Relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and multiple intelligences: a study with accountants of Minas Gerais

Matias, Marcia Athayde 28 July 2010 (has links)
This research aimed to raise elements to discover the link between entrepreneurial characteristics and the multiple intelligences of Minas Gerais accountants. Thus, two theories were investigated: the theory of needs, David McClelland, and the theory of multiple intelligences, Howard Gardner. McClelland studied the behavioral aspects of the entrepreneurs and their main characteristics, defined in number of 10: the search for opportunity and initiative, ability to take calculated risks, demand for quality and efficiency, persistence, commitment, finding information, setting goals, systematic planning and monitoring, persuasion and contact networks and ultimately independence and selfconfidence. The second theory was the theory of multiple intelligences developed by Howard Gardner. To Gardner, intelligence is not only based on measurement of IQ, and this is just one strand among many different expressions that human cognition assumes. Gardner chose eight predominate intelligences: linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist. About the methodology applied in this study, it is situated within the hypothetical-deductive method, using a positivist approach and defined as an exploratory study about their goals. As research strategies, literature studies, survey, and a questionnaire to collect data were used. The population study definition and the electronically distribution of questionnaires received support from the Regional Accounting Council of Minas Gerais, culminating with the acquisition of 189 valid questionnaires. With the data, were first carried out the initial descriptions of the profiles of the accountants, which showed that 84% of the best entrepreneurial characteristics were setting goals, finding information, commitment, and seeking opportunities, and 64% of the best intelligences results were: the logical, the interpersonal and the intrapersonal. Unfortunately, the linguistic intelligence did not produce good results. To perform the correlation between the characteristics and intelligences, the canonical correlation analysis were used. But first, was calculated the descriptive statistics of data followed by the average tests to see if differences existed between the mean of groups and tested the inherent assumptions for canonical correlation analysis, which were considered satisfactory. After canonical functions interpretation, through the canonical weights, canonical loadings and canonical crossloadings, an interesting relationship between intelligence and the entrepreneurial characteristics was discovered, which showed about 20% of entrepreneurial characteristics expressed by individuals of the study population are explained by the intelligence profile, especially influenced by interpersonal, intrapersonal and spatial intelligences. The strongest pattern of relationships, supported by the three forms of interpretation occurred between spatial, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences and independence and self-confidence, goal setting and persistence entrepreneurial characteristics. This study has limited results and has not intending to make inferences in the field of applied psychology. Additionally the extrapolation of these results to other Brazilians accounts is limited. Suggestions for future research that involves these results: results must be studied to be transformed into concrete proposals for accounting students education, the research could be extended to other accountants in Brazil and that correlations between characteristics and intelligences can be examined by scholars of educational psychology, in order to obtain the clearest understanding of their formation.

The Perceptions of Flight Instructors Regarding the Application of Multiple Intelligences Theory in Flight Training

Bernard W Wulle (6732872) 16 October 2019 (has links)

For several decades, educators have used Howard Gardner’s (1983) Multiple Intelligences Theory in a variety of ways to make teaching and learning more effective. However, within flight instruction, little or no attention has been focused on the concept of Multiple Intelligences and their impacts on student learning and retention. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to determine if Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) who have been provided with information about Multiple Intelligences perceived a positive relationship between their new knowledge about Multiple Intelligences and their instructional effectiveness. The study used participant journals, focus groups, and individual interviews to determine if CFIs perceived Multiple Intelligences Theory to be valuable when applied to flight instruction. The results indicated that the participants believed Multiple Intelligences Theory added value to their flight instruction. Implications for practice and directions for future research are provided.

An Action Research of Using Multiple Intelligences Theory in the Junior High School English Class

Chen, Jen-Jun 17 July 2004 (has links)
This report describes an action research project that was designed to determine the effect of using the multiple intelligences theory in the junior high school English class. Through a review of the multiple intelligences theory combined with analysis of its relation with English teaching, the researcher tried to design MI-based English teaching activities, construct the MI-based English instruction program and furthermore bring it into practice. The subjects consisted of thirty-three second-grade students selected from the researcher¡¦s junior high school in Kaohsiung. The MI-based English instruction program included twelve learning units in daily lessons and three cooperative learning projects. At the research period of twenty-three weeks, the data were collected through teacher observation records, students¡¦ learning reflections, teaching journals, MI-based worksheets, interviews, Multiple Intelligences Strategy Appraisal for English Learning, and English Learning Experience Questionnaire. The accumulations and analysis of the research results indicated a satisfaction of students¡¦ diversity and a significant improvement in several aspects including students¡¦ learning motivations, learning for understanding, memorizing learning materials, using English learning strategies, creating authentic learning environment, an improvement in English abilities, and understanding different cultures. The MI-based English instruction showed a positive learning atmosphere so students accepted the MI-based teaching model, and then hoped the researcher to keep the teaching model in the future. However, the research result also indicated that students learned the diverse English learning strategies, but they were unable to use the strategies very well. Besides, a few students with negative attitudes toward MI-based teaching hoped to be taught individually. The multiple intelligences theory is close to teachers¡¦ teaching experience that students learn in diverse ways. It provides a useful framework for teachers to organize all kinds of teaching methods. Moreover, the multiple intelligences theory is not just an idea. It is practicable for teachers to carry it out in daily lessons to solve the problems about students¡¦ diversity.

The Research of ¡§Integration between Information Technology and Education¡¨ To Develop the Minds for Kids and Young People

Hung, Li-yu 09 September 2009 (has links)
This research is mainly by the 13 years experience in education system which is outside the authoritative information education system with kids and young people. Besides to construct the kids and young people apparent ability of information science and technology, the goal in the research is to research the hidden knowledge of the information science & technology which combines in the education. The research wants to clarify many presently myths of information education. And also wants to provide more efficiency and happy learning mode. The research is based on the book of Howard Gardner (2007)¡mFive Minds for the Future¡n. It takes ¡§Disciplined Mind¡¨, ¡§Synthesizing Mind¡¨, ¡§ Creating Mind¡¨, ¡§Respectful Mind¡¨, ¡§ Ethical Mind¡¨ as the main theory construction. To study student's minds development condition who is graduated from high school or university. And the comparison of minds growth condition of the junior high student who are joining in the competition. The findings discovered: To develop intelligences and minds of kids and young people on integration of Information Technology and the Education is not only constructed the basic information technology ability, and it can promote on the child body's instructive, self-confidence, independent exploration, spontaneous study within 2-3 years. Kids and young people almost were constructed and applied the abilities under the project-based works, and extend the top level for the minds and abilities, like the system thinking, problem solving, communication, the leadership. The special experience with five minds raises and the construction is being related. Ethics mind of the five minds must be in Disciplined Mind, Synthesizing Mind, the Creating Mind, and the Respectful Mind raises certain foundation since childhood, the abstract thinking ability level grows up naturally, the kids and young people becomes the good citizen in the 21st century era. It must be presented during the university life or entering the work place obviously.

Lay persons' perceptions of intelligence : students' estimates of their own and their parents' overall and multiple intelligences.

Mokoena, Boithatelo. January 2013 (has links)
Intelligence as a psychological construct has received vast attention from professionals and lay persons. The theory of multiple intelligences as a perspective of understanding intelligence has enjoyed extensive research. The present study took advantage of the theory of multiple intelligences as stipulated by Gardner (1983), which puts fourth seven types of intelligences (verbal/linguistic, bodily – kinesthetic, musical, logical/mathematical, spatial, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence). The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between these types of intelligences and gender, age and education. Participants comprised of 83 female and 75 male university students between the ages of 18 years and 50 years. Participants were requested to estimate their own and their parents’ scores for the seven multiple intelligences and overall intelligence. For parents’ estimates on overall and multiple intelligences, there was no statistically significant difference in those types of intelligences traditionally associated with females (musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal intelligences) and those traditionally associated with males (logical and verbal intelligences). Parents’ level of education had a significant impact on their estimated levels of intelligence; those parents in the Diploma/Degree category were rated as statistically significantly more intelligent than those in the No Diploma/Degree category. The mothers in the Diploma/Degree category were rated as significantly more intelligent on overall, verbal, logical, spatial, musical, and interpersonal intelligences, while the fathers in the same category were estimated as significantly more intelligent on overall, verbal and logical intelligences. Future studies on lay persons’ conceptions of intelligence should include more refined measures of socio-economic status and level of education. Qualitative investigations into the meaning of intelligence in different cultural contexts are also needed. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sci.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2013.
