O grafite no contexto urbano da cidade de São Carlos / Cultural integration of graffiti into the urban context of the city of São Carlos

Santos, Janete Ferreira Rodrigues dos 17 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis addresses a study on the artistic and aesthetic expression of urban graffiti in the city of São Carlos. It is based on the historical process of graffiti in Brazil and worldwide and approaches its importance as a cultural movement, socio-cultural resistance, communication means and street art work. It also investigates the relations between graffiti and Sanca Hip Hop, an event held annually in November since 2007, in partnership with the Black and collective movement of Hip Hop in São Carlos. The study aims at contributing to the understanding of graffiti interventions - one of the elements of the Hip Hop Movement by presenting the aesthetic production of São Carlos as a tool. The skate park and vicinity of Santa Felicia neighborhood as well as the skate park and surroundings of Aracy City 2 neighborhood were the sites chosen. They were created during Sanca Hip Hop and Pre-Sanca Hip Hop events. The subjects are graffiti artists Bico Madrugas (Danilo Alves Barbosa), Lelin Alves (José Wesley Barbosa Alves), Stan Bellini (Leandro Augusto Bellini) and Spok (Luis Carlos Dias de Almeida) in alphabetical order, who expressed interest in participating of the research. The methodology used was an interview recorded and transcribed with permission of graffiti artists Bico Madrugas and Spok, held in different places, according to the artists´ availability. The interview with Lelin Alves and Stan Bellini was conducted through a questionnaire sent by email, as the artists do not reside in São Carlos. Some issues arisen were answered by facebook messenger. An analysis of the artework considered most relevant was also conducted. The theoretical framework of Lara (1996), Costa (1994, 2000) and Zamboni (2001) was used as the basis for the research.

Le récit de la Passion du Christ dans les peintures murales : formes et fonctions du cycle narratif à Byzance et en Serbie du XIIIe au XVe siècle / Narrative images of the Passion of Christ in Late Byzantine mural paintings : form and function

Soria, Judith 04 December 2015 (has links)
This doctoral thesis addresses the narrative images of the Passion of Christ in Late Byzantine mural paintings, their place and their ritual function. This cycle, which takes place under the Dodekaorton, has a clear sequence. Going around the nave and generally passing through the sanctuary space, it participated in the construction of the worship space. A study of the images used shows that such the narrative form given to these cycles, far from being accidental, is a carrier of meaning and discourse. Firstly decorating prestigious Byzantine foundations in the late thirteenth century, this kind cycle soon appeared in Serbian churches painted in the Kralj Milutin’s milieu and then became common in more modest monuments. In this study, the cycle is considered as a whole, using the traditional tools of iconography but also narratology, which helped to highlight its narrative structure. At last, the liturgical function of the cycle is explored, revealing a Eucharistic and mystagogic discours produced by the narrative.

Expecting epiphany : performative ritual and Roman cultural space

Arney, Jane Katherine 17 June 2011 (has links)
When ancient people entered a temple or other sacred space, how did the art and architecture of the site work upon their senses as mediators of divine presence? This thesis demonstrates that the ancient perception of the deity's actual presence in visual images created a tension that was intensified by the spatial environment and the theatricality of ritual performance. Visual representations acted in concert with cultic ritual to manipulate the visitor through a revelatory experience and create the phenomenon of epiphany. Epiphany, from the Greek word epiphaneia, is the visible manifestation of the deity. Epiphany in the ancient world could manifest as miracles, signs and natural phenomena; however, my thesis will focus primarily on visual epiphany of deity. My aim is to describe how the elements of the built environment and performative ritual combined to create not only the expectation but the actualization of an epiphanic experience for the beholder. The phenomenon of visual epiphany has been largely overlooked until relatively recently. Scholarly examination of temples and other ritual spaces has focused more on archaeological description, formal analysis, mythic narrative, and social and political structures. There has been very little exploration of the actual ritual and neuro-phenomenological experience of religious participants as it relates to the visual environment. With this work my aim is to contribute to the scholarly knowledge of the ancient viewer's experience of epiphany as it was shaped by sacred space and mediated by religious ritual in the ancient world. / text

The architecture of the Forum of Pompeii

Horrocks, Paul. January 2000 (has links) (PDF)
"Thesis presented June 1998, amended February 2000." Includes bibliography. V. I: text -- v. IIa: Figures -- v. IIb: Figures. This thesis demonstrates the falsity of the assumptions that ancient architects followed innate spatial cues or responses in their designs, that ancient people experienced the resulting buildings through the same responses, and that modern scholars can thus reconstruct both the intentions of the ancient architects and the architectural effects experienced by ancient visitors to ancient buildings throught the medium of their own spatial reactions. This underlying belief is contestable given its basis in unproven and untested late nineteenth century theories of perception. The thesis also demonstrates that the assumption made by modern scholars that the architects of the Forum of Pompeii were primarily concerned with uniformly enclosed space, axial symmetry, and orthogonality, is wrong, and is contradicted by the actual form of the buildings around the Forum.

Alcatruz Riquelme, Paula January 2011 (has links)
