Analysis and critique of two beginning method books for the beginning orchestra classroom

Master of Music / Department of Music / Frederick Burrack / This report gives a detailed description and analysis of two method books used for beginning orchestra classes; Essential Elements for Strings by Michael Allen, Robert Gillespie, and Pamela Tellejohn Hayes, and Strings Basics by Terry Shade and Jeremy Woolstenhulme. Olathe School District #233 in Olathe, Kansas is doing research to decide whether to continue using their current method book, Essential Elements, or switching to a different method book, String Basics, for the 2014-2015 school year. Book 1 from each series is analyzed by looking at the order of concepts taught, how the concepts are introduced, how the book is laid out, illustrations, accompaniment CDs, the teacher’s manual, and additional resources offered by the publishers. The books are then compared and critiqued before a personal recommendation is given on which book would be more beneficial to the students of Olathe.

<p>Bakgrund</p><p>Musikhistorien är på inga sätt opåverkad av den historiska utvecklingen i övriga samhället. Den är en väsentlig del av olika tidsepokernas rådande kulturer. Skolan har en viktig roll i elevernas socialisationsprocess. Kan en manlig musiklärare använda sig av musik skriven av män, framförd av män och skriven ur ett manligt perspektiv, i en undervisningssituation och räkna med att han når fram till alla elever? Lämnar man inte per automatik halva klassen utanför eftersom musiken inte kan anknyta till deras upplevelsevärld, livsåskådning eller värdegrund. Vilken musik används egentligen i skolan idag och vad säger den?</p><p>Syfte</p><p>Syftet är att utreda om det finns något som skulle kunna kallas en gemensam skolmusiks kanon i den kommun i södra Sverige jag undersöker. Vidare är det av intresse att utreda vad dessa låtar kan säga för lyssnaren ur ett genusperspektiv och att utreda ur vilket perspektiv de är skrivna</p><p>Metod</p><p>Utöver litteraturstudier baseras resultatet på 6 kvalitativa enkäter med musiklärare i en mellanstor stad i södra Sverige. Därefter använder jag mig av en egenkonstruerad mall för att tolka det jag ser som en gemensam skolmusikkanon.</p><p>Slutsats</p><p>Det existerar med hög sannolikhet en gemensam skolmusikkanon. Valet av låtar baseras troligtvis på att de är så pass välkända, enkelt konstruerade och neutrala i förhållande till skolans värdegrund. Icke desto mindre är antalet kvinnliga artister, låtskrivare och musiker kraftigt underrepresenterade i skolans musikundervisning</p>

<p>Musikundervisningen på högstadieskolorna skiljer sig väsentligt enligt en nationell utvärdering som skolverket genomförde 2003, både beträffande vilka kunskaper eleverna utvecklar samt lärares arbetssituation och förutsättningar. Vilka faktorer är det som påverkar lärares sätt att bedöma kunskaper inom ämnet musik? Är musikaliska kunskaper och prestationer överhuvudtaget mätbara och vilka metoder använder undervisande lärare sig av för att göra bedömningen likvärdig?</p><p>Det övergripande syftet är att ta reda på vilka moment som verksamma musiklärare i grundskolans sista år betygssätter inom ämnet musik. Finns det några moment som värderas högre än andra vid bedömningen och isåfall vilka? Vi kommer att med utgångspunkt i teorier kring olika typer av kunskap, kunskapsbedömning samt läroplanen för den obligatoriska grundskolan, Lpo 94, genomföra kvalitativa intervjuer med fyra betygsättande lärare.</p><p>Vi har genom kvalitativa forskningsintervjuer tagit del av fyra verksamma musiklärares tankar kring bedömning inom musikämnet. Vi har även analyserat intervjusvaren kvalitativt med hjälp av relevant teori.</p><p>Lärarna lägger fokus vid de moment som de känner att de har bäst praktiska förutsättningar att genomföra. Det handlar då både om vad som finns att tillgå i musiksalen, samt vilka kunskaper och vilken kunskapssyn som läraren har med sig. Dessa moment ligger sedan till</p><p>grund för vilka kunskaper som bedöms. Lärarna förenklar betygskraven i de lokala kursplanerna för att alla elever ska kunna nå uppnåendemålen utifrån skolans förutsättningar.</p>

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN MUSIC MAKING: Understanding How Songwriting Can Develop Character

Music is often used by its advocates as a vehicle to promote positive changes in students, academically, emotionally, and socially (Catterall, Chapleau & Iwanaga, 1999; Fiske 1999). In this study, I examined the implementation, in my own public elementary classroom, of a five-month Character Really Matters! songwriting program that I developed. The study is designed to provide insight into the potential impact of such songwriting music programs on students’ character development. The study examined the connections students made between the songwriting program and their lives. The data for this study were derived from a guided student reflection form used as a normal part of teaching. To provide further elucidation of the impact of the songwriting program on students’ character development, I supplemented the reflection-form data with my direct classroom observations using field notes and a character-tracking checklist. Findings from the research revealed connections between songwriting and its impact on developing children’s work habits in collaboration, cooperation, commitment to quality work, and in turn, character development. By writing songs, students were able to tell stories and reflect on their learning from their songwriting experiences. The Large Ensemble/European Classical Music Paradigm and African American-Originated Dance-Musicking| A Dispositival Analysis of U.S. Secondary Music Education

<p> This study examined the historical and contemporary debate among music educators in U.S. public secondary schools over the viability of the large ensemble paradigm&mdash;choirs, bands, orchestras&mdash;and its valorization of European classical music, versus the introduction of popular music and its attendant mode of informal learning in small groups. Using theoretical and historical concepts from the work of Michel Foucault, this study established the concern for social order in the Progressive Era, the simultaneous interest in elite European culture as a regulatory device, and the emergence of the comprehensive high school as the framework in which the large ensemble paradigm was constituted. It contrasted this paradigm with the contemporaneous proliferation of African American-originated dance-musicking, which derived its popularity, in part, as a participatory form of musicking, and which destabilized dominant constructions of class, race and gender/sexuality through its practices&mdash;above all, its integration with dancing. This genealogy of the oppositional relationship between the two types of musicking provided the foundation for a critical analysis of music education discourse, based on key 20th-century texts produced by the National Association for Music Education that defined the large ensemble paradigm and articulated its rationale. This analysis revealed that many of the beliefs, assumptions, and practices of music education as defined in the US in the first half of 20th century still constrained the debate over the use of popular music in secondary schools in the 21st century by inhibiting a full appreciation of the kinesthetics of African American-originated dance-musicking. </p>

Multiple Intelligence Theory and its Application in Modern Vocal Pedagogy

In 1983, Howard Gardner shook the foundations of intelligence testing and the field of education by suggesting that there are seven distinct intelligences. These intelligences had testable and distinct attributes that were supported by his research at the Boston Veterans Administration. This research cited the existence of savants and prodigies, isolation by brain damage, and psychometric findings as support for Multiple Intelligence Theory. Widely accepted by the education community at large, the application of MI principles has been further elaborated in the writings of Thomas Armstrong and David Lazear. Can the principles of Multiple Intelligence Theory be applied in the area of modern vocal pedagogy? After surveys of the foundations of vocal pedagogy and the principles ofMI theory, the author suggests they can. What follows is an analysis of two current vocal pedagogy texts, Van Clu·isty's Foundations in Singing and Jan Sclunidt's Basics of Singing to determine the variety and use ofMI principles in each. After the analysis, the author suggests applications of MI principles, using aspects of their song learning chapters as a template that can be adapted to any vocal pedagogy text.
