Rekenaargesteunde musiekonderrig op hoërskool- en voorgraadse vlak met besondere verwysing na die gebruik van 'n multimediadatabasis van Xhosa musiekterme

Thesis (MMus) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the modern Western world, secondary and tertiary learners generally have ready access to the use of computers, multimedia and the Internet. As a means to strengthen traditional education, computer-based methods and materials are increasingly being used in the education system and are also strongly recommended by many educational experts. The use of such electronic educational means has however resulted in various changes to the education system. Music educators, too, are subject to these changes. The aim of this study is to determine the extent to which computer-based education can contribute to the strengthening of traditional music education of the Western world. To this end, it is necessary to ascertain, in practice, the value of using computer-based material for the purpose of music education. A multimedia database of Xhosa music terminology was created in the Music Department of Stellenbosch University, with high school learners and undergraduate students as target group. In this thesis, the value of this database, as an example of computer-based material for music education, is assessed. It is intended to extend the database at a later stage through the addition of music terminology from other indigenous music cultures. In its current form, the database thus forms part of a larger whole and is not viewed as a completed enterprise. On the basis of the literature that was studied for the investigation, it is determined whether the multimedia database for Xhosa music terminology measures up to the criteria for effective computer-based programmes. Suggestions are also made for improving the database to ensure a more useful and user-friendly product. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In die moderne Westerse wêreld het sekondêre en tersiêre leerders tans redelik algemeen toegang tot die gebruik van rekenaars, multimedia en die Internet. Rekenaargesteunde metodes en materiaal word toenemend ter versterking van die tradisionele onderwysstelsel aangewend, en ook deur talle opvoedkundiges aanbeveel. Die gebruik van dergelike elektroniese onderrigmiddele het egter verskeie veranderings in die onderwysstelsel teweeggebring. Ook musiekopvoeders word deur hierdie veranderings geraak. Die doelstelling van hierdie navorsing is om te bepaal tot watter mate rekenaargesteunde musiekonderrig 'n bydrae kan lewer tot die versterking van tradisionele Westerse musiekonderrig. Om hierdie doelstelling te bereik, is dit noodsaaklik om in die praktyk te bepaal watter waarde rekenaargesteunde onderrigmateriaal het vir die doeleindes van musiekonderrig. 'n Multimediadatabasis van Xhosa musiekterme is in die departement Musiek aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch geskep, met hoërskoolleerders en voorgraadse studente as teikengroep. In hierdie tesis word die waarde van hierdie databasis, as 'n voorbeeld van rekenaargesteunde onderrigmateriaal vir musiekonderrig, geëvalueer. Daar word beoog om die databasis op 'n later stadium verder uit te brei deur ook musiekterme uit ander inheemse musiekkulture by te voeg. Die databasis in sy huidige vorm maak dus deel uit van 'n groter geheel en word nie as 'n afgehandelde databasis beskou nie. Op grond van literatuur wat vir die doel van die ondersoek bestudeer is, word bepaal of die multimediadatabasis van Xhosa musiekterme voldoen aan die kriteria vir doeltreffende rekenaargesteunde onderrigprogramme. Daar word ook voorstelle gemaak oor hoe die databasis verbeter sou kon word om 'n meer bruikbare, gebruikersvriendelike produk te verseker.

Multi-label feature selection with application to musical instrument recognition

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An area of data mining and statistics that is currently receiving considerable attention is the field of multi-label learning. Problems in this field are concerned with scenarios where each data case can be associated with a set of labels instead of only one. In this thesis, we review the field of multi-label learning and discuss the lack of suitable benchmark data available for evaluating multi-label algorithms. We propose a technique for simulating multi-label data, which allows good control over different data characteristics and which could be useful for conducting comparative studies in the multi-label field. We also discuss the explosion in data in recent years, and highlight the need for some form of dimension reduction in order to alleviate some of the challenges presented by working with large datasets. Feature (or variable) selection is one way of achieving dimension reduction, and after a brief discussion of different feature selection techniques, we propose a new technique for feature selection in a multi-label context, based on the concept of independent probes. This technique is empirically evaluated by using simulated multi-label data and it is shown to achieve classification accuracy with a reduced set of features similar to that achieved with a full set of features. The proposed technique for feature selection is then also applied to the field of music information retrieval (MIR), specifically the problem of musical instrument recognition. An overview of the field of MIR is given, with particular emphasis on the instrument recognition problem. The particular goal of (polyphonic) musical instrument recognition is to automatically identify the instruments playing simultaneously in an audio clip, which is not a simple task. We specifically consider the case of duets – in other words, where two instruments are playing simultaneously – and approach the problem as a multi-label classification one. In our empirical study, we illustrate the complexity of musical instrument data and again show that our proposed feature selection technique is effective in identifying relevant features and thereby reducing the complexity of the dataset without negatively impacting on performance. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ‘n Area van dataontginning en statistiek wat tans baie aandag ontvang, is die veld van multi-etiket leerteorie. Probleme in hierdie veld beskou scenarios waar elke datageval met ‘n stel etikette geassosieer kan word, instede van slegs een. In hierdie skripsie gee ons ‘n oorsig oor die veld van multi-etiket leerteorie en bespreek die gebrek aan geskikte standaard datastelle beskikbaar vir die evaluering van multi-etiket algoritmes. Ons stel ‘n tegniek vir die simulasie van multi-etiket data voor, wat goeie kontrole oor verskillende data eienskappe bied en wat nuttig kan wees om vergelykende studies in die multi-etiket veld uit te voer. Ons bespreek ook die onlangse ontploffing in data, en beklemtoon die behoefte aan ‘n vorm van dimensie reduksie om sommige van die uitdagings wat deur sulke groot datastelle gestel word die hoof te bied. In ons empiriese studie illustreer ons die kompleksiteit van musiekinstrumentdata en wys weereens dat ons voorgestelde veranderlike seleksie tegniek effektief daarin slaag om relevante veranderlikes te identifiseer en sodoende die kompleksiteit van die datastel te verminder sonder ‘n negatiewe impak op klassifikasie akkuraatheid.

An investigation into the application of the IEEE 1394 high performance serial bus to sound installation contro

This thesis investigates the feasibility of using existing IP-based control and monitoring protocols within professional audio installations utilising IEEE 1394 technology. Current control and monitoring technologies are examined, and the characteristics common to all are extracted and compiled into an object model. This model forms the foundation for a set of evaluation criteria against which current and future control and monitoring protocols may be measured. Protocols considered include AV/C, MIDI, QSC-24, and those utilised within the UPnP architecture. As QSC-24 and the UPnP architecture are IP-based, the facilities required to transport IP datagrams over the IEEE 1394 bus are investigated and implemented. Example QSC-24 and UPnP architecture implementations are described, which permit the control and monitoring of audio devices over the IEEE 1394 network using these IP-based technologies. This thesis investigates the feasibility of using a new digital interconnection technology, the IEEE-1394 High Performance Serial Bus, for audio and control data distribution in local and remote music recording studio environments. Current methods for connecting studio devices are described, and the need for a new digital interconnection technology explained. It is shown how this new interconnection technology and developing protocol standards make provision for multi-channel audio and control data distribution, routing, copyright protection, and device synchronisation. Feasibility is demonstrated by the implementation of a custom hardware and software solution. This thesis investigates a fuzzy syntactic approach to the interpretation of noisy two-dimensional images. This approach is based on a modification of the attributed graph grammar formalism to utilise fuzzy membership functions in the applicability predicates. As far as we are aware, this represents the first such modification of graph grammars. Furthermore, we develop a method for programming the resultant fuzzy attributed graph grammars through the use of non-deterministic control diagrams. To do this, we modify the standard programming mechanism to allow it to cope with the fuzzy certainty values associated with productions in our grammar. Our objective was to develop a flexible framework which can be used for the recognition of a wide variety of image classes, and which is adept at dealing with noise in these images. Programmed graph grammars are specifically chosen for the ease with which they allow one to specify a new two-dimensional image class. We implement a prototype system for Optical Music Recognition using our framework. This system allows us to test the capabilities of the framework for coping with noise in the context of handwritten music score recognition. Preliminary results from the prototype system show that the framework copes well with noisy images.

A Real-Time Merging-Buffering Technique for MIDI Messages

A powerful and efficient algorithm has been designed to deal with the critical timing problem of the MIDI messages. This algorithm can convert note events stored in a natural way to MIDI messages dynamically. Only limited memory space (the buffer) is required to finish the conversion work, and the size of the buffer is independent of the size of the original sequence (notes). This algorithm's real-time variable properties suggest not only the flexible real-time controls in the use of musical aspects, but also the expandability to interactive multi-media applications. A compositional environment called MusicSculptor has been implemented in terms of this algorithm.
