Uncanny Reminders: The 'Nazi' in Popular CultureTobler, Tamara Lynn 15 August 2014 (has links)
The ubiquity of the ‘Nazi’ – the fictional Doppelgänger of the historical Nazi – in the various media of popular culture is both disturbing and fascinating. There is an important relationship between the ‘Nazi’ and its audience; related to but separate from the historical Nazi, the creation and reception of the ‘Nazi’ both enables and exemplifies the continual processing of the past. Using a purpose-built framework (concept and terminology) for the study of the ‘Nazi’ as a phenomenon in and of itself, in combination with Freud’s concept of the uncanny, this thesis examines the dynamics of the relationship between the ‘Nazi’ and its audience in four examples: television episodes “Deaths-Head Revisited,” “He’s Alive” (The Twilight Zone), and “Patterns of Force” (Star Trek); and Serdar Somuncu’s performances/readings of Mein Kampf. The temporal and geographical context of the episodes (1960s America) seem far removed from Somuncu’s performances (1990s/2000s Germany), but analysing the production and effects of the uncanny moments generated in each case reveals a provocative raison d’être that spans across the geographical and temporal divide. / Graduate / 0311 / 0900

The Rise of the United States' Airfield Empire in Latin America, North Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Asia (1927-1945). How America's Political Leaders Achieved Mastery over the Global Commons and Created the "American Century"Ruano de la Haza, Jonathan January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation makes the argument that the Franklin Roosevelt administration (1933-1945) embarked upon a global hegemonic project to transform the United States into a world empire and bring about the "New World Order." In addition, the expansion of U.S. commercial and military air routes was seen as instrumental to the realization of this project.

Vimperk v letech 1938 - 1945 / Vimperk in 1938 - 1945Dalíková, Jana January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to introduce Vimperk between the years 1938 and 1945. The work is based on the study of the archival documents in the relevant archives in the Czech Republic and on the articles in the regional volumes. The first part of this work contains the literature and archival sources used in this work. The introduction of the history of the town until 1938 and the World War II follows. These are supplemented with the basic pieces of information about the history of World War II. Without that it would not be possible to set this small town into a wider context. The main part of this work is to elaborate the way of life in Vimperk during these years, which is mostly based on the study of the archival documents. The majority of people in this area were Germans. In 1938 was the area called "Sudetenland" anexed to the Hitler's Germany. Then followed the World War II and the men from this region had to join the German army, many of them didn't survive until the end of the war. The conditions of life of the civilians got worse with the time. In the end of the war there were also thousands of refugees, who also needed help. Public affairs in the town reduced more and more on keeping the state, everything was controlled by the Nazi organisations. As the front line was getting...

Slovenští Židé v Terezíně, Sachsenhausenu, Ravensbrücku a Bergen- Belsenu, 1944/1945 / Slovak Jews in Theresienstadt, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen, 1944/1945Putík, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
The dissertation focuses on the fates of some 5 000 men, women and children of mostly Jewish descent who were deported by German Nazi authorities from the occupied Slovak State into the Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt concentration camps in the period ranging from November 1944 to the end of March 1945. The main objectives of the dissertation include the establishment of the number and identity of the deportees, the circumstances of their arrest, deportation, imprisonment and liberation as well as the causes of survival, or death, of the victims of racial persecution during the German occupation of Slovakia. Based on a comparative and content analysis of the available archival sources, oral and written testimonies by survivors and, to a limited extent, of secondary literature, the writer attempts to explain the conduct of the perpetrators and victims as well as the general historical context of the deportation and imprisonment of Slovak Jews by the Nazi regime. Based on an analysis of documents related to the anti-Jewish measures taken by the Nazi security apparatus in Slovakia with the assistance of local collaborators, more general conclusions are made with regard to the development of the Nazi "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" in the German Reich and the...
