Improving the Utility of Artificial Shelters for Monitoring Eastern Hellbender Salamanders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis)

Artificial shelters show great promise as novel, non-invasive tools for studying hellbenders, but their use thus far has faced several challenges. During initial trials in multiple river networks, artificial shelters routinely became blocked by sediment and dislodged during high stream discharge events, and were rarely used by hellbenders. We sought to determine whether these complications could be overcome via alternative shelter design, placement, and maintenance. Between 2013 and 2018, we deployed 438 artificial shelters of two different designs across ten stream reaches and three rivers in the upper Tennessee River Basin. We assessed evidence for several hypotheses, postulating broadly that the availability, stability, and use of artificial shelters by hellbenders would depend on how shelters were constructed, deployed, and/or maintained. We found that maintaining shelters at least once every 40 days limited sediment blockage, and building ~ 40 kg shelters with 3-4 cm thick walls and recessed lids improved their stability during high discharge events. Additionally, we found that hellbenders most frequently occupied and nested in artificial shelters when they were deployed in deeper (~50+ cm) portions of reaches with high adult hellbender densities. Our results suggest that artificial shelters can serve as effective tools for studying hellbenders when designed, deployed, and maintained with these advancements, but also highlight some limitations of their use. / Master of Science / Hellbenders are large, fully-aquatic salamanders that live primarily in cool, rocky, swift-flowing streams in portions of Appalachia and the lower Midwest. They are imperiled across most of their native range due to human-caused habitat degradation, but their declines, conservation needs, and population status have historically been difficult to study due to the fact that they spend the majority of their lives beneath large, often inaccessible boulders. While these boulders are sometimes possible to lift, doing so can disturb critical hellbender habitat. Therefore, alternate, less invasive hellbender sampling methods are necessary in order to improve knowledge about their conservation status and needs. Artificial shelters, which are large, hollow, concrete structures that mimic natural boulder crevices and feature removable lids, show promise as a novel, innovative tool for non-invasively studying hellbenders. However, initial trials of these shelters have yielded mixed results, with shelters often becoming swept away and destroyed during floods, becoming blocked by sand and sediment and thus inaccessible to hellbenders, or simply not being used by hellbenders when accessible. We sought to determine whether these complications could be overcome by optimizing the way that shelters were constructed, deployed, and maintained in streams inhabited by hellbenders. Between 2013 and 2018, we deployed 438 artificial shelters of two different designs across ten stream reaches and three rivers in the upper Tennessee River Basin. Using multiple analyses, we tested one broad overall hypothesis: that the efficacy of using artificial shelters to study hellbenders would depend on how they were constructed, how frequently they were maintained, and where they were placed in the stream. We found that maintaining shelters at least once every 40 days limited sediment blockage, and building ~ 40 kg shelters with 3-4 cm thick walls and recessed lids improved their stability during flood events. Additionally, we found that hellbenders most frequently occupied and nested in artificial shelters when they were deployed in deeper (~50+ cm) portions of reaches with high adult hellbender densities. Our results suggest that artificial shelters are effective tools for studying hellbenders when designed optimally, maintained frequently enough, and placed in appropriate locations. However, exceptions to these findings may exist in certain heavily degraded stream reaches.

Assessing Changes in Bog Turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) Population Abundance and Factors Influencing Nest Predation in Virginia

Across the globe, wildlife populations are facing increasing challenges, with many taxonomic groups significantly declining. Among endangered vertebrates (including birds, non-avian reptiles, fishes, mammals, and amphibians), turtles are one of the most threatened groups with over 60% of the 356 recognized species classified as threatened or worse. Bog turtles (Glyptemys muhlenbergii), are among the most imperiled of North American freshwater turtles. These small, secretive turtles have declined by up to 90% in parts of their range, which consists of the Northern Population and the Southern Population, and spans the eastern U.S. from New York to Georgia. These declines are mainly documented in the northern part of their range, but recent work in North Carolina suggests that turtles in the southern part of their range are similarly declining. Prior to this research, surveys aimed at estimating abundance had not been conducted in Virginia since the late 1990's. The research described here was conducted as part of a state-wide population assessment of bog turtles in Virginia. For my first chapter, I conducted capture-mark-recapture surveys in six wetlands in Floyd County, Virginia during 2019 and 2020, and generated abundance estimates. These wetlands had been surveyed in the same manner in 1997, which provided me the opportunity to compare recent abundance estimates with those generated from the 1997 data. My analyses suggest that turtle abundance across these six sites has declined by approximately 50% since 1997. This decline appears to be driven by, but not wholly attributable to, the alteration and loss of habitat at 2-3 of the 6 sites. Habitat loss is acknowledged as one of the major drivers of population declines throughout the range of the bog turtle, in addition to illegal collection for the international pet trade. Due to the life history traits of this species (long life span and low fecundity), the loss of an individual from any life stage from the population can have detrimental effects. While many turtle populations are not heavily impacted from periods of low reproductive success, numerous subsequent years of complete nesting failure can negatively impact population-level survival. Recent studies have suggested that anthropogenically subsidized nest predators may be playing a role in continued nest failure at certain wetlands. My second chapter investigated the factors associated with anthropogenic footprint (i.e., buildings) and infrastructure that may be driving nest predation by these subsidized predators. In 2019 and 2020, I conducted a field experiment in 35 wetlands which utilized artificial turtle nests to investigate variation in nest predation across Montgomery and Floyd Counties, Virginia. I found that increases in the percent of developed land-use and other metrics of anthropogenic disturbance significantly increased nest predation, while increases in the percent of land-use without roads or buildings significantly decreased nest predation. The findings from these two chapters are consistent with population trends documented in other parts of the bog turtle range, and build upon prior studies to investigate drivers of nest predation. The findings from these two studies are consistent with population trends documented in other parts of the bog turtle range, and build upon prior studies to investigate drivers of nest predation. These results provide information that can be used by managers to aid in the conservation of this endangered species, and suggest further courses of research for future projects.

Avian population and community dynamics in response to vegetation restoration on reclaimed mine lands in southwest Virginia

Coal surface-mining is often implicated for its negative impacts on native flora and fauna. However, some studies suggest that, in reclaiming land after mining, there may be potential to create early successional habitat needed by many avian species currently in decline throughout eastern North America. I evaluated nest-site selection and nest success for on reclaimed mine lands in southwest Virginia during the summers of 2010 and 2011. For this nest-site analysis, I focused on 2 bird species common to reclaimed mine lands in southwest Virginia: field sparrows (Spizella pusillia) and indigo buntings (Passerina cyanea). In addition, I assessed bird community attributes in relation to various surface-mine reclamation regimens over a 5-year period from 2007-2011. For both species, I found estimates of daily nest success to be higher than other estimates reported in the literature; however, empirical estimates of adult and juvenile survival are needed to provide better estimates of population status. For field sparrows, models of avian nest success support the hypothesis that a tradeoff exists between nest concealment and a view of the surroundings for field sparrows. For indigo buntings, year explained the most variation in nest success, with much lower estimates of daily nest survival in 2010, possibly as a result of increased precipitation. I also assessed avian community dynamics in relation to vegetation changes on reclaimed mine sites and observed a total of 96 species throughout the 4 years of sampling. Local species persistence and species turnover were comparable to another continental scale study conducted using breeding bird survey (BBS) data. Observed changes in community vital rates were likely a result of changes in certain habitat attributes over the 5-year period. Lastly, seven species were unique to certain cover types, suggesting the need to consider landscape level processes when developing restoration guidelines for reclaimed coal surface-mines. / Master of Science

Habitat Requirements and Foraging Ecology of the Madagascar Fish-Eagle

With a population estimate of 99 pairs, the Madagascar fish-eagle (Haliaeetus vociferoides) is one of the rarest birds of prey in the world. I investigated the ecological requirements of the Madagascar fish-eagle in 1994 and 1995 to help determine management action to prevent its extinction. I investigated fish-eagle foraging ecology in 1996 to determine its prey preference and whether fish abundance and availability affect fish-eagle foraging rates and foraging success. Madagascar fish-eagle nest and perch trees were taller, broader, had more unobstructed branches, and had a greater arc of accessibility than unused trees. Perch trees also were deciduous more often and had a narrower growth form than unused trees. Nest sites had more shoreline perch trees than unused sites. Lakes occupied by fish-eagles were deeper and clearer, and had more shoreline perch trees, more fish, a greater total fish weight, and more fish species than unoccupied lakes. I developed logistic regression models to predict the probability of Madagascar fish-eagle use based on the measured habitat variables. Nest and perch tree models included tree height. The nest site model included number of shoreline perches. Lake models included number of shoreline perches and either number of fish, total fish weight, or number of fish species. These models can be used to predict fish-eagle habitat use with > 70% accuracy. Introduced tilapia, Oreochromis spp. and Tilapia spp., made up the majority of both the gill net (66.3%) and fish-eagle catch (64.7%) in similar proportion, which suggests that the fish-eagle is an opportunistic predator. Replacement of native fish species by exotics, thus, probably has not been detrimental to the island's fish-eagle population. Male fish-eagle foraging success was positively correlated with number of fish, total fish weight, and number of fish species, which suggests that declines in the fish population could adversely affect the fish-eagle population. The results of this study indicate that Madagascar fish-eagles require bodies of water with large shoreline trees and an ample fish population. I recommend greater protection of aquatic habitats, monitoring and management of freshwater fish populations, and education of local people in sustainable tree harvesting practices. / Ph. D.

<p>This thesis focuses on a black-tailed godwit (<i>Limosa limosa</i>) population, consisting of 35-40 pairs, that breeds on a grazed shore meadow on SE Gotland, Sweden. The small size of the population makes it more prone to extinction due to chance events, than a larger population.</p><p>The godwits showed microhabitat preferences when choosing nest sites. Godwit nests had higher vegetation over the nest cup, lower surrounding (1-3 m) vegetation and different plant species composition, as compared to random sites. Breeding near conspecifics or other wader species, especially lapwings (<i>Vanellus vanellus</i>) and further away from potential predator perches were the most important factors in decreasing nest predation. A comparison between different shore meadows along the east coast of the island revealed that large, open areas suffered less from nest predation. Thus, shore meadows suitable for breeding godwits should be large and without trees or other predator perches and have a grazing regime that favours variation in vegetation height.</p><p>Over 80% of previously ringed adults returned each year, but very few birds ringed as chicks were recovered. Hatching success was 55-60% for all observed nests. To predict the future of the current population, demographic data were used in an ecological risk analysis. The simulations showed that the Gotlandic population will not survive the coming 40 years without immigration.</p><p>Black-tailed godwits are divided into three subspecies. Genetic analyses (mtDNA) revealed that all subspecies had unique haplotypes and there was a clear geographic structure among subspecies. Within the <i>limosa</i> subspecies, godwits on Gotland and Öland showed a high proportion of rare haplotypes, but no genetic variation was found in Dutch birds. These results imply that black-tailed godwits on Gotland and Öland have high conservation value.</p>
