Edvan Cordeiro de Miranda 14 January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this work was to carry out a systematic study of GTAW welding parameters with feeding of cold wire for covering application of nickel alloys (UNS N06625, UNS N06686 and UNS N10276) in substract of steel C-Mn considering the analysis of geometric, economic and operational characteristics of layers, form to adjust these coverings for the industries of the Sector of Oil and Natural Gas. The weldings were carried out employing an industrial robot and an automatic feeder of cold covered. A preliminary study was carried out to determine the initial conditions to exploration of the parameters, after that it was carried through the welding of a complete factorial. In a last exploration of welding parameters was applied the Taguchi Method to carry out to the analysis of diverse factories of control with a reduced number of experiments. The geometric profile of weld filet was raised in the transversal section of the test specimen. After it obtained the results, some adjustments were made to carry out weldings of coverings. The results showed that the correct adjustments of the Distance of the Tip of the Wire Workpiece (DTWW) influenced in the geometry and diluition weld filet and in the arc stability. It was also seen that to obtain minors levels of dilution, a Distance of the Tip of the Electrode Workpiece (DTEW) depends of the level of energy employed, for lesser energies use lesser DTEWs and, for higher energies, higher DTEWs must be used. The levels of dilution and reinforcement were reduced with the use of the weaving technique. The technique of the energy influenced of significant way in the geometry and dilution of the weld filet. For the same energy welding and, consequently nearly equal cooling rate and heat in the sample, it can have diverse levels of the dilution without metallurgical alterations. The protection gas influenced in the dilution and the convexity index (R/L) of the weld metal, in a general way, the mixture of argon and nitrous oxide presented the best condition for welding of coverings. The adjustment of the energy for current welding (Type I) presented the best efficiency of for low energy, already for high energy, the best adjustment is for welding speed (Type V). For low levels of dilution, the use of weaving technique reduced of significant way the times and associates costs accomplishment of coverings. With the results obtained it was possible to carry out coverings of quality with low levels of dilution (<10 %) trough of GTAW process with feeding of cold wire.

Electrochemical behavior of UNS N07090 alloy indifferent sulfuric acid concentrations.

Alexandra Silvia Matheisen Paroni 21 October 2015 (has links)
Nickel alloys have a wide range of application nowadays due to their excellent resistance to aggressive media and high temperatures. UNS N07090, the nickel alloy studied herein, is used for turbochargers, exhaust and after treatment systems of diesel engines. These applications expose the alloy to hot gases, which condensate forming sulfuric acid (H2SO4). It is thus important to know the corrosion resistance of the alloy in this media. The goal of this work is the characterization of the electrochemical behaviour of UNS N07090 alloy through potentiodynamic polarization curves in different sulfuric acid concentrations. On the one hand, higher acid concentrations were noticed to lead to higher corrosion of the alloy. This phenomenon can be discussed by sulfate (SO42-) adsorption, which negatively influences not only the formation but also the growth of the passive film on nickel. On the other hand, the presence of Cr in UNS N07090 composition, improves the corrosion resistance of the alloy far more than expected, directly affecting the shape of the polarization curves of the alloy, placing it in a condition of high corrosion resistance despite the worst performance shown by the other elements present in the chemical composition of the alloy, such as Co, Al and Ti. 24h immersion periods in sulfuric acid slightly raise corrosion parameters of UNS N07090 alloy, but still ranking the alloy in very good corrosion resistance. Finally, it can be concluded that UNS N07090 alloy exposed to 1M to 4M H2SO4 at 25°C presents good corrosion resistance and that this is not affected by longer immersion periods. The results showed that the corrosion process of alloy UNS N07090 is controlled by sulfate and hidrogen cathodic reactions, which have stronger or weaker contribution depending on acid concentration and immersion time on the corrosive media.

The super alloy Inconel 713C is an alloy whose main element of its composition is nickel. The combination of high levels of this element and the structure of this material makes it very difficult to be transformed by the machining process. Because of this difficulty and lack of information about the machining of this material, the purpose of this study was to find a combination of tool and cutting parameters to present a tool life of around 15 minutes, which is considered economically viable for industrial practice. To achieve this purpose it was tested cemented carbide tools with two different geometries, four types of coatings (TiAlN, TiN, TiAlN, TiCN-Al2O3-TiN and Al2O3) in addition to the carbide tool without coating were tested. Tools were also tested ceramics (Al2O3 (pure), Si3N4 (sialon) + Al2O3 SiCw (whiskers)) and CBN. Among the tests, the carbide tool geometry CNMX and coating TiAlN presented a lower wear rate than the others tested with a life of approximately 17 minutes of cutting / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Properties of ultra fine grain [beta]-CuAlNi strain memory alloys

Mukunthan, Kannappar January 1987 (has links)
A method has been developed to produce grain sizes as low as 5µm in β-CuAlNi alloys and the effect of grain size on mechanical and strain-memory properties was studied. The thermomechanical treatment procedure involved two. sequential warm working and recrystallization steps at 600° C and 800° C respectively on eutectoid alloys. Three different eutectoid alloys, two with Ms temperature of around 0°C and one with Ms = 220° C were used for the present studies. Even at fine grain sizes, the specimens produced were of single β- phase type without any second phases. Two-stage characteristic stress-strain curves were obtained for most of the specimens in both the strain memory and pseudoelastic states. It was found that the ultimate tensile strength and strain to failure increased with decreasing grain size according to a Hall-Petch relationship down to a grain size of 5µm with the exception of one alloy. Fracture strengths of 1,200 MPa and fracture strains of 10% could be obtained. It was found that the major recovery mode, whether pseudoelastic or strain memory, did not have any significant effect on the total recovery obtained. Recovery properties were not affected significantly by decreasing grain size. Approximately 86% recovery could be obtained for an initial applied strain of 5% at a grain size of around 10µm. Grain refinement increased the fatigue life considerably, possibly due to high ultimate fracture strength and ductile fracture mode. Fatigue life of 275,000 cycles could be obtained for an applied stress of 330 MPa and a steady state strain of 0.6%. Most of the fractures are due to intergranular-type brittle fracture. At fine grain sizes, transgranular-type brittle fracture and microvoid coalescence-type ductile fracture dominated the fracture mode. Oxygen segregation at grain boundaries is the possible explanation for the different mechanical properties shown by different alloys in the present work by being a major factor in causing intergranular-type fracture. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Materials Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Microstructure and thermo-mechanical properties of gradient nickel alloys

Jie Ding (8771438) 28 April 2020 (has links)

Gradient structured (GS) metallic materials have shown unique properties including the synergy of high strength and good ductility, improved fatigue and wear/friction resistance etc. One of the severe surface modification technique, surface mechanical grinding treatment (SMGT), has been proven an effective method for the generation of gradient structures in metallic materials. Most of Ni-based superalloys are precipitation strengthened and with an extraordinary combination of high strength, ductility and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. The precipitation behaviors of these materials are sensitive to their initial microstructures. This thesis focuses on the microstructure evolution and mechanical behaviors of two types of gradient Ni alloys.

GS Hastelloy C-22HS and Inconel 718 (IN718) Ni-based superalloys were fabricated through the SMGT technique. The gradient structures consist of nanograined (NG) or nanolaminate (NL) surface layer and the subsurface layers with deformation twins. In situ compression test results reveal that intergranular back stress may contributes to the high work hardening capability of the GS C-22HS alloy. Mo-rich thick grain boundaries (GBs) formed in the gradient C-22HS samples after heat treatment. In situ micropillar compression studies coupled with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that the Mo-rich thick GBs are stronger barriers than conventional thin GBs to the transmission of dislocations, leading to significant strengthening. Furthermore, the formation of thick GBs also contributes to the improvement of thermal stability of nanograins in the C-22HS alloys. The gradient microstructures in the IN718 alloy changed the precipitation behavior and thermal stability of nanograins in the alloy. The studies on precipitation behaviors of GS IN718 alloy reveal that η phase formed in the severely deformed surface NG layer after annealing at 700 oC. Thermal stability studies show that NG IN718 alloy with grain sizes smaller than the critical value of ~ 40 nm is thermally more stable than their coarse-grained counterpart. The underlying mechanisms of strengthening and improved thermal stability of the gradient Ni-based superalloys are discussed based on transmission electron microscopy studies and MD simulations. This work suggests that tailoring the gradient microstructures may lead to the discovery of metallic materials with novel mechanical and thermodynamic properties.
