I’m Fully Myself and You Are Too: Developing a Continuum of Queer Trans Sexual Safety in Nightlife Contexts

Kaywin, Emma January 2023 (has links)
Researchers have found that negative sexual experiences occur in nightlife settings, and have sought to identify the drivers of these experiences as well as preventive solutions. This body of inquiry overwhelmingly focuses on the experiences and needs of young women who are assumed to be cisgender and heterosexual, and does not consider potentially differing needs of gender and sexuality minorities. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to include gender and sexuality minority voices in this conversation and surface identity-specific experiences, needs, and ideas for how to support sexual safety in nightlife contexts. Data collection was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 40 gender and sexuality minorities who went out in New York City nightlife an average of at least once per week. Through reflexive thematic analysis, a three-part Continuum of Sexual Safety in Nightlife was developed: (a) as long as bad things don’t happen, (b) consent is mandatory, and (c) I’m being myself and you are too. Ideas for how nightlife operators could alter their establishments to improve feelings of sexual safety for gender and sexuality minority patrons were identified across physical venues, policies, and staff hiring and training. Implications of the findings are discussed. Future studies should extend this preliminary research to better understand the needs and experiences of gender and sexuality minority nightlife patrons and evaluate the economic case for implementing these suggestions in nightlife settings.

The production of fantasy in space, discourse and embodied practice : gender and desire in a South African nightclub.

Nicholson, Tamaryn Jane. January 2013 (has links)
Historically, the study of fantasy has been one of the innermost workings of the psyche, making it largely inaccessible to those unwilling to work with a psychoanalytic model of the mind. This means that an important area of study remains largely unexplored by those working within alternative paradigms. However, with recent work by theorists such as Billig (1999), Burkitt (2010a, 2010b) and Durrheim (2012) on the dialogic unconscious and repression, areas previously confined to psychoanalytic study are becoming more accessible to interactionist approaches. Building on works such as these, and those of theorists such as Butler (1990, 1993, 1997), this paper theorises the production of fantasy in talk, space and embodied practice. Fantasy is argued to be produced on the boundaries of that which is speakable or performable within a given context, referencing taboo in performative and dialogic disavowal or repression. This framework for the production of fantasy is then applied to talk around, and the performance of, a provocative, gendered practice known as the screaming orgasm, which is performed in club spaces in South Africa and abroad. This paper reports on an ethnomethodologically informed ethnographic study which took place at one South African night club over the course of several months. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2013.

Lukkerz, Jack January 2010 (has links)
Places like nightclubs or pubs are frequently visited in order to find partners for love, sex and relationships. This study examins behavioral patterns and trends among young adults in these environments. A computer-based questionnaire has been implemented on entertainment establishments - two studentclubs, one youth club and three nightclubs - in Malmoe and Lund in southern Sweden. The emprical material contains at most 149 answers, and at least 109. Sex, love and relationships are less important than expected, but are still some of few big reasons for visiting nightclubs. Expectations of meeting somebody for sex are medium, the sexual encounter is expected to take place within the next 24 hours, in one of five cases directly on site, containing primarily intercourse, kissing and petting, and resulting in love or a ”fuck-buddy”-relationship. Most of the respondents are looking forward to see their new sexual partner again, while the sex is expected to feel less positive one week later, especially among the regular visitors. Most of the respondents assume they will be able to influence the type of sexual actitvity, and most of them consider reducing risks of STI transmittion. Still, many respondents never consider reducing risks, and quite few think they are not going to reduce the risks, or don´t know how to reduce them. Disinterest and lack of knowledge are the main reasons not knowing how to reduce the risks. The theoretical frame consists of Goffmans ”The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life”.

O TRABALHO DAS PROSTITUTAS QUE RESIDEM EM CASAS NOTURNAS: UMA PERSPECTIVA PSICODINÂMICA.

Ribeiro, Nívia Chaves 15 March 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 NIVIA CHAVES RIBEIRO.pdf: 1361986 bytes, checksum: b6520d710f8dd60afd7412cac00fd0ce (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-15 / A case study of descriptive and exploratory was conducted aiming to investigate the meanings attributed to work and the experience of prostitutes living in nightclubs in relation to their work in the light of the psychodynamics of work. The specific objectives of the research were: to investigate the meanings that the prostitutes who live in nightclubs attach to their work, investigate and analyze the organization of work of prostitutes who live in nightclubs, investigate and analyze the working conditions of prostitutes living in nightclubs, investigate and analyze the working relations of prostitutes living in nightclubs; investigate aspects that trigger experiences of pleasure and suffering in prostitutes who live in nightclubs, raise and describe the coping strategies, individual and collective, that prostitutes residing in nightclubs develop to deal with suffering at their work. The participants were chosen considering the inclusion criteria as: female, over 18 year olds, profession as prostitutes who live and work in a nightclub. Obeying these criteria, 15 women were interviewed between 18 and 35 years, with educational level ranging from completed elementary school and incomplete college. To collect the data the documentary analysis techniques and individuals semi-structured interviews were used and for data processing the technique of Graphical Analysis of the Discourse. During data analysis it was revealed that the company studied, like any other, has positive and negative aspects in the management of the organization and subjectivity of the worker. As to the organization of work this is presented in a rigid way, making it impossible to balance the needs of the participants with the demands of work, highlighting the enforcing of a rhythm that neglects the welfare of workers. The time available for the activities of rest and relaxation are also not enough for them. The speech of the interviewees shows that the organization offers good food, but is weak in accommodation and in its physical structure, including reports of compromised health problems due to noise, smoke and drink. In working relations the process is satisfactory with colleagues and customers, however conflicting with management, triggering factor of suffering experiences once the control and hierarchical imposition prevails on the workers. Nowadays the working relations guide a demanding human being who seeks for his wellbeing to better share the social welfare as an actor and not just a spectator. For the prostitutes, the experiences of pleasure sustained by the recognition between them some customers, the possibility of fulfilling the dream of "out of this life, to help the family, and to go back to school, made up for the experiences of suffering coming from homesickness , tiredness and natural wear of "evenings", and society discrimination.
