Video-projected augmented reality : Photometric compensation for static and dynamic concealment / Réalité augmentée vidéoprojetée : compensation photométrique pour l'effacement statique et dynamique

Bokaris, Panagiotis-Alexandros 25 November 2016 (has links)
This thesis develops new approaches for human presence concealment and revelation using augmented reality techniques. It focuses on projector-camera systems (ProCams) and their application in “smart projections”, where the projected virtual content is adapted according to the environment. One previously-studied problem is the photometric compensation for projecting on a colored fixed surface that allows the viewer to observe the same image as it would appear on a white surface. Despite the various methods for color compensation that have been proposed the last decade, compensation on a real-world surface with saturated colors and sharp color boundaries is still an open issue. The main objective of this work is the color compensation on a moving 3D object using a ProCam, which is a dramatically more challenging scenario. A novel method for color compensation using a single input frame is proposed. It consists in estimating the spectral reflectance of the surface in order to compensate for it under the assumption that the projector responses are known or previously measured. This method was fully developed on GPU to enable real-time compensation. Previous methods on color compensation are discussed and compared in order to evaluate the performance of our technique. The accurate photometric and geometric calibration of a ProCam is essential for precise compensation. A new geometric calibration technique between a depth sensor and a ProCam is presented in order to make the projection on a moving object feasible. A photometric calibration is described for the transformation of the device-dependent camera and projector values to the device-independent CIE XYZ 1931 color space. The artistic potential of the proposed augmented reality techniques is further explored through the interactive art installation “Gardien du Temple”. Revelation and concealment has always been a common experimentation ground for both artists and scientists. This audio visual installation uses augmented reality to hide the presence of a written poem on a carpet inviting the spectator to reveal it. In such applications, the accuracy and robust performance of the methods employed is crucial and, thus, it offered a challenging ground for testing and evaluation.

How to improve the numerical reproducibility of hydrodynamics simulations : analysis and solutions for one open-source HPC software

Nheili, Rafife 07 December 2016 (has links)
HPC simulations in various scientific domains suffer from failures of numerical reproducibility because of floating-point arithmetic peculiarities. Different distributions of a parallel computation may yield different numerical results. Numerical reproducibility is a requested feature to facilitate the debug, the validation and the test of industrial or large software. In this thesis, we focus on the openTelemac software that implements finite element simulation for industrial and scientific hydrodynamics. We identify and analyze the sources of this reproducibility failure. We define and implement how to recover numerical reproducibility in two openTelemac modules. We also measure that the running time extra-cost of the reproducible version is reasonable enough in practice.

External Reactive Power Compensation of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator

Singer, Amr 21 September 2010 (has links)
This research work focuses on the reactive power compensation of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PSG) in wind power plants. PSG feeds a fixed voltage dc grid through a rectifier bridge. In variable speed operation, the PSG will be able to build torque only in small speed range. This is due to the fixed magnet of the PSG. External reactive power compensation provides an attractive solution to overcome this problem. Different reactive power compensation configurations were examined. Statics synchronous series compensation and a shunt passive filter were chosen as a compensation method. Simulation and implementation of small wind power plant were performed. The wind power plant consists of the synchronous generator, inverter, rectifier, coupling transformers and shunt passive filter. The experimental results agree to the proposed theory and simulation results.

Náhrada škody a nemajetkové újmy vzniklé pracovním úrazem / Compensation for damage and non-material damage caused by a work accident

Fojtíková, Monika January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of damage and non-material damage caused by work accidents. The first chapter describes the basic concept of legal liability and main functions of the employer's liability for damage caused to employees. The second chapter focuses on the basic assumptions, fulfilment of which creates an obligation for the employer to compensate employees for damage and non-material damage. It also describes the work accident as a legal term and discusses specific situations such as a heart-attack, a work injury during team-building or a work injury during a business trip using interpretation based, in particular, on a review of Czech case law. The employer is not always obliged to compensate employees for damage and non-material damage. Situations in which the employer is released from the obligation to pay damages and non-material damage are described at the end of the second chapter. These situations include violation of legal regulations or instructions, drunkenness or misuse of addictive substances and, last but not least, reckless behaviour of an employee. The third part which is the core of the thesis, deals with individual types and scopes of compensations, namely compensation for loss of earnings, material damage and purposefully spent treatment costs. A particular...

Are Mutual Fund Managers’ Compensation Reasonable In Relation To Their Contributions? : - A study regarding actively managed mutual funds

Nilsson, Maximiliam, Hansson, Gusten January 2020 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate fund managers salaries in relation to their contributions. The study is conducted on the Swedish fund market under a period over five years, 2014-2018, and include 332 funds. The result observed shows a positive relation between salaries and risk-adjusted performance. The result proves that fund managers are able to outperform the market on average, which should not be possible to do systematically over time according to the efficient market hypothesis. It also turns out that salary has a positive relationship with assets under management. This indicates that fund managers are employed and compensated for more reasons than to generate a high return, namely to contribute to more significant inflows of cash to the fund company. Interpretations of fund managers’ salaries are primarily linked to agency theory and economics of superstars. The agency problem alter in the fund industry since the setting is two-folded. Agency problem could be mitigated by implementing a performance-based compensation structure, to aligning investors, management and fund managers’ ambitions. The result shows signs that a performance-based salary is present in the fund industry. A fund managers’ salary assumes to be based on his/her skillfulness, but could also be due to an individual’s stardom. To conclude, the thesis state that fund managers’ deserve their salary, which in relative terms are fairly high, since they procure additional benefits to the fund company.

A Novel SMC-Like Protein Modulates C. Elegans Condensin Functions: A Dissertation

Chao, Lucy F. 25 March 2016 (has links)
Chromatin is organized dynamically to accommodate different biological processes. One of the factors required for proper chromatin organization is a group of complexes called condensins. Most eukaryotes have two conserved condensins (I and II) required for chromosome segregation. C. elegans has a third condensin (IDC) that specializes in dosage compensation, a process that down-regulates X gene dosage in XX hermaphrodites to match the dosage in XO males. How the three condensins are regulated is not well understood. Here, I present the discovery and characterization of a novel condensin regulator, SMCL-1. We identified SMCL-1 through purification of a MAP-tagged condensin subunit. Condensins are comprised of SMC ATPases and regulatory CAP proteins; SMCL-1 interacts most abundantly with condensin SMC subunits and resembles the ATPase domain of SMC proteins. Interestingly, the SMCL-1 protein has residues that differ from SMC consensus and potentially render SMCL-1 incapable of hydrolyzing ATP. Worms harboring smcl-1 deletion are viable and show no detectable phenotype. However, deleting smcl-1 in a condensin hypomorph mildly suppresses condensin I and IDC mutant phenotypes, suggesting that SMCL-1 functions as a negative regulator of condensin I and IDC. Consistent with this, overexpression of SMCL-1 leads to condensin loss-of-function phenotypes such as lethality, segregation defects and disruption of IDC localization on the X chromosomes. Homology searches based on the unique ATPase domain of SMCL-1 reveal that SMCL-1-like proteins are present only in organisms also predicted to have condensin IDC. Taken together, we conclude that SMCL-1 is a negative modulator of condensin functions and we propose a role for SMCL-1 in helping organisms adapt to having a third condensin by maintaining the balance among three condensin complexes.

Real-time torque ripple compensationfor PMSMs in robotics applications

Jieqiong, Wang January 2024 (has links)
The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) have wide application in the robotics field due to its efficiency and reliability. As a servo system, it demands high precision in different control applications. Torque ripple is a critical issue resulting in mechanical vibrations and shortening the life of PMSMs, especially at low speeds. Because the magnitude of speed harmonics is proportional to the magnitude of the torque harmonics of the same order, methods to reduce speed harmonics can be utilized for torque ripple minimization. This thesis work proposes three methods for torque ripple reduction. One method is based on harmonic speed control (HSC) and harmonic current control (HCC). Another method uses the fuzzy to adjust PI parameters based on HSC-HCC. The third method utilizes torque ripple estimation (TRE) and HCC. In the proposed methods, torque ripples are estimated using a torque ripple model (TRM). At low speeds, speed harmonics and current harmonics are obtained based on an adaptive linear neural-based filter. The errors between the optimal harmonic current reference from HSC or TRE and the harmonic current from extraction are used to generate harmonic voltage in HCC. This harmonic voltage is fed back to compensate and reduce torque ripple. Furthermore, a feedforward compensation method is proposed to minimize torque ripple across a range of speeds based on the feedback compensation results. Finally, simulations and experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity and performance of the proposed torque ripple reduction methods.
