Muggles, and quidditch, and squibs, oh my! A study of names and onomastic wordplay in translation, with a focus on the Harry Potter seriesMcDonough, Julie January 2004 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to study names in the Harry Potter series and its French and Spanish translations.
It therefore opens with an analysis of the names, nicknames, and titles that are found in the English series before elaborating on the characteristics that distinguish names with special significance from those without.
The second chapter offers an analysis of the onomastic wordplay that can be found in the five English-language novels.
Over the course of the third chapter, the reader will find (a) summaries of several translation theories, with a focus on those that pertain directly to the translation of names and onomastic wordplay, (b) a study of the strategies available to translators who are faced with loaded names, and finally, (c) an analysis of which of these strategies would seem to be the most useful in the translation of the Harry Potter series.
Last, the reader will find the author's commentary on the treatment of names by Francois Menard, the French translator, by Alicia Dellepiane, who translated Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone into Spanish, and by Adolfo Munoz Garcia and Nieves Martin Azofra, who translated the remaining four volumes into Spanish. La figura del Judio en la obra historica de Americo CastroSanscartier, Chantal January 2004 (has links)
This thesis consists of a study of the figure of the Jew in La Realidad historica de Espana, the most important of Americo Castro's works on Spanish history.
My thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, I offer an overview of the evolution of Castro's historical work followed by an examination of his historical theories and key concepts and how they were received by the intellectuals of his time.
The second chapter examines the presence of the Jewish population in Spain throughout history according to Castro.
Since Castro's vision of the Jews is very different from that of his contemporaries and tends to be exaggerated at times, the third chapter is dedicated to the study of the cultural legacy of the Jews to Spanish culture according to his works.
The conclusion to this thesis offers a brief comment on Castro's inclusion of the Hebrew population in his historical work as a possible answer to the official historical discourse of the francoist regime. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

In this dissertation we investigate whether the term 'near-native speaker' should be used to refer to speakers who, in spite of having been in contact with the Spanish language since childhood, differ from the Spanish standard norm sanctioned by grammarians and linguists with respect to both their grammatical competence and their ability to process this language. In order to carry out this investigation we have used two constructions that evidence unstable areas of the Spanish language: (a) Resumptive Pronouns in ambiguous Restrictive Relative Clauses (Pintaron los techos de unas casitas i que cuando nos fuimos a vivir al camp las i vimos en malas condiciones.); and (b) Optional Dative Clitic Doubling (Sally Potter (les) dedico el premio a los tangueros.) versus Obligatory Dative Clitic Doubling (El nino travieso le rompio el jarron a la abuela. ). Three groups of speakers with Spanish as their mother tongue participated in our study: an SC (Spanish Control) group consisting of speakers who have always lived in a Spanish speaking country; an LC (Late Contact with English) experimental group formed by L1 Spanish / L2 English speakers, and an EC (Early Contact with English) group which consisted of so-called heritage speakers. Our aim was to revise the term near-native so that it is not only the experimental groups' global grammatical competence that determines their being near-native versus native speakers, but also these experimental groups' local grammatical competence in relation to their acceptance and processing of Resumptive Pronouns and Dative Clitic Doubling constructions. We carried out three off-line and two on-line experimental tasks (Acceptability Judgments, Magnitude Estimation and Sentence Matching) intended to evaluate the grammatical and processing abilities of the three groups of speakers, who represented two varieties of Spanish: the Peninsular variety and the Rioplatense variety. The results show that the experimental groups' (LC, EC) global grammatical competence differs significantly from that of the Control group (SC). However, in relation to the acceptability and processing of the Resumptive Pronouns and Dative Clitic Doubling constructions, the experimental groups differ from the Control group only with respect to certain aspects of these constructions while they evidence native competence in relation to other aspects. This leads us to propose that the term 'near-native' cannot be applied across the board.
