A Tomb With A View and Two Stories

Blanshei, Matthew Louis 01 August 2010 (has links)
In the “Introduction,” I discuss how the works presented in this “creative” thesis draw upon traditions of both experimental fiction and realism. The novella makes up Volume I of a longer work. The episodes in the life of the protagonist are depicted in chronological order, but not as chapters in a seamless narrative. In constructing the novella in this way, I attempted to convey how an individual might, for reasons peculiar to himself, choose to view certain moments of his life as turning points. But I do not rely upon the first-person point of view. By using a third-person limited, a third-person omniscient and “second-person” narrative voice in several of the chapters, I hoped, in part, to give to the representation of the “the life of Donovan Jewell” the quality of the “case study.” Each of the “two stories” following the novella is meant to stand alone. Written in the present tense, they both offer intimations of a coming family crisis—or perhaps of a crisis that will be forever postponed.

Eichendorffs aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts: Ist der Taugenichts der perfekte Romatische Held in der perfekten Romantischen Novelle, ja oder nein?

Anderson, Annette Margaret 21 April 2008 (has links)
The novella, Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts was published in 1826 by Joseph von Eichendorff and was heralded at that time and for many years thereafter by critics as the epitome of the German romantic novel, and the hero, the Taugenichts himself, was the ultimate German romantic hero as well. In the recent past critics have questioned this orientation and research has been initiated that contradicts the assertion that Eichendorff crafted the ideal romantic novella and hero. This Thesis will examine the validity of this claim.

The façade of Santa Maria Novella : architecture, context, patronage and meaning

Roy, Brian E. January 1997 (has links)
This thesis is a monograph on the facade of the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. The present appearance of the facade is the result of three building campaigns effected over the period of two centuries (c1300--c1500), and two restorative campaigns conducted in the twentieth century. Each of the three major campaigns is considered in isolation, with attention to reconstructions, formal and comparative analyses, and extensive contextualization and discussion of patronage networks. The twentieth-century interventions are cursorily presented in an epilogue. Major themes developed and continued through the five chapters of the dissertation are: architecture and its projected meanings in late medieval and Renaissance Florence, urban organization, political structures, the Dominican order and the position of the Florentine chapter within local and international ecclesiastical, social and political structures.
