The Thorn Tree

Fitzgerald, Caitlin Anne January 2007 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Thomas Kaplan-Maxfield / We remember childhood injustices for the rest of our lives. They are thorn-like memories, piercing and immediate, affecting us long after we have matured and moved on with our lives. The wounds of childhood have been written about by some of literature's greatest writers, including most notably James Joyce, in his masterpiece A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In this creative work I try to investigate, through the voices of children, the role of wounds in the growing character of a child. Wounds both literal and metaphorical dominate the narrative, which is told from a variety of perspectives as one group of friends from one neighborhood advance through elementary school. My goal in this work is to portray the painfully observant nature of children — to show how much they absorb in the early years of their lives, the scope of which adults might not realize. I also try to capture the humor and tragedy of children's voices, and to create a whole world as seen through the eyes of children. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2007. / Submitted to: Boston College. Fernando Sabino: entre fluido e fixo - leitura comparativa de \"O homem nu\" e \"A nudez da verdade\" / Fernando Sabino: between fluid and fixed - comparative reading of \"O homem nu\" and \"A nudez da verdade\"

Balbi, Henrique 15 December 2017 (has links)
This study is, at its core, a comparative reading of \"O Homem Nu\" (1960) and A Nudez da Verdade (1993), both penned by Fernando Sabino. It develops an analysis and a discussion of three main aspects of those texts: their dialogue with his career, the literary elements with which he made them and their connections to literary genres, such as the Brazilian \"crônica\", the short story and the novella. In the first chapter of this dissertation, Sabino\'s career is summarized in a parallel between the first publication date of both texts. Then, we proceed to a comparative analysis of the literary similarities and differences between them. In the third chapter, we mobilize essays discussing genre conventions, as well as broader theoretical works, to comprehend both texts. Finally, we develop three conceptual images: the fluidity, the fixedness and between. The fluidity is a set of forces that produce instability and renewal, whether in literary aspects or in genre conventions. The fixedeness represents other forces, in the opposite direction, which produce stability and institutionalisation. Between is an image that references how Sabino manages to keep distance from fluidity and fixedness at the same time, to better take advantage of both of them.

„Es ist nicht gut, so ganz allein zu sein...“ : Männlichkeiten und Geschlechterbeziehungen in Theodor Storms später Novellistik

Forssell, Louise January 2006 (has links)
The present dissertation examines conceptions of masculinity in the works of Theodor Storm, a representative of German Poetic Realism. It shows how variations of masculinities are arranged, constructed and performed in Storm’s novellas within the bourgeois order of the supposedly 'stable' 19th century. The different types of masculinities are viewed and analysed in selected areas, as represented in the following four texts: Schweigen, Der Herr Etatsrat, Ein Doppelgänger and Der Schimmelreiter. Simultaneously, they constitute different research fields within Men's Studies, such as family, body/health, power/violence and also society/"male spaces". The main thesis of the dissertation is that Storm expands contemporary 19th-century perceptions of masculinity and femininity by making traditional gender stereotypes converge in his late novellas. The characters only partially match the bourgeois, bipolar gender model, and masculinity should be understood as a variation rather than as an opposition to femininity. Furthermore, the dissertation proposes that Storm should be considered a precursor to literary modernity to a larger extent than has previously been assumed. Therefore, the dissertation focuses on internal differentiation of the hegemonic bourgeois masculinity typical of the 19th century in Storm's works. Here, free spaces are observed between gender identities traditionally conceived as binary. Using Robert Connell's theoretical concept of hegemonic masculinity as a basis, the relationship between inferior, marginalized masculinities and normative ideals is particularly emphasized. Furthermore, the dissertation analyses the depiction of bourgeois self-conflicts in the text, through which Storm exposes the hegemonic stereotype of masculinity.

From the Basement: Stories about Geeks, Gamers, and Freaks

2014 September 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a creative work of fiction in the form of one novella and four short stories. The collection is a work of humour and entertainment. “The Coin Collective” delves into the cut-throat world of cosplay, “The Dead of Waynesboro” follows Declan Mortel as her tries to create the ultimate zombie movie in true gothic fashion, “220 Torren Mill Road” is an epistolary horror story about a whack-job mother and her game-addicted son, “Dragon’s Lair Comics & Collectables” is set during a Magic the Gathering tournament and questions ‘what makes a monster?,’ and Chemical Connection explores drug and raver culture through an eclectic variety of characters. I hope the collection will speak to an entire generation of self-described and closet geeks. For those without intimate knowledge of the material, I endeavoured to exhibit, even expose, aspects of specific subcultures, shedding light on the basement dwellers who inhabit them.
