<p>The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ knowledge of pain. The method used was a systematic literature study. Information was gathered from the databases Blackwell Synergy, Academic Search Elite and Medline, and the keywords used in the search were: pain, knowledge, nurses and nurses.</p><p>The result was divided into three subgroups; Insignificant documentation and evaluation. More education is necessary. Knowledge and attitudes.</p><p>Nurses need to improve their documentation and do it more continuously, not only at the end of their workday, but also make documentation about changes in the patient’s condition. The result showed lack in nurse’s basic traing regarding pain and pain management. Nurses that had gone to further education regarding pain and pain management had more knowledge in the subject. Concerning how knowledge and attitudes played a role in the interpretation of pain in patients from other cultures , the result showed how important it is that the nurses are culturally congruent, meaning that they must support, promote and amplify actions and decisions that goes along the lines of other cultures values and life styles.</p><p>The educating of pain advisers seems very worth wile since workplaces with pain-advisers have improved their pain management considerable.</p> / <p>Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att beskriva sjuksköterskors kunskap om smärta.</p><p>Metoden som använts var en systematisk litteraturstudie. Data samlades in via databaserna Blackwell Synergy, Academic Search Elite och Medline. Sökorden som användes var pain, knowledge, nurses och nursing. Resultatet delades in i tre huvudrubriker: Brist i dokumentation och utvärdering. Mera utbildning behövs. Kunskap och attityder.</p><p>Sjuksköterskorna måste bli bättre på att dokumentera och att göra det mer kontinuerligt, inte bara i slutet av deras arbetspass utan även dokumentera efter patienternas förändrade tillstånd.</p><p>Resultatet visade att det fanns brister i grundutbildningen när det gällde kunskap om smärta och smärthantering. Vidareutbildade sjuksköterskor har mer kunskap om smärta och smärthantering.</p><p>När det gällde kunskap och attityder vid tolkning av smärta hos patienter från en annan kultur framkom vikten att sjuksköterskan var kulturkongruent, vilket innebär att hjälpa, stödja, främja och förstärka handlingar och beslut som passar andra kulturers värderingar och livsstilar. Utbildning av smärtrådgivare tycks vara något att satsa på, eftersom arbetsplatser där smärtrådgivare införts visat att hanteringen av smärta blivit avsevärt bättre.</p>
