Determination and assessment of procedures of the pour-through nutrient extraction procedure for bedding flats and plug trays

Schweizer, Amelia Lee 31 October 2009 (has links)
A study was conducted to develop, demonstrate and assess the Pour-through nutrient extraction procedure for bedding flats and plug trays. The Pour-through technique involves pouring a prescribed volume of water on a recently irrigated medium, then collecting and analyzing the leachate to predict nutrient availability in the medium. The volume of water necessary to collect a Pour-through from a 1204 bedding flat was determined to be 5 ml per cell based on leachate pH and electrical conductivity (EC) at various volumes of water applied. Impatiens wallerana ‘Super Elfin Red’ and Tagetes erecta ‘Apollo’ were grown in 1204 bedding flats at three fertilizer concentrations to assess the overall potential of the Pour-through procedure. Analysis of leachate EC, pH, and macro- and micro-nutrients indicated that the Pour- through method of nutrient extraction was sensitive and effective in extracting available nutrients. Leachate analysis was positively correlated to fertilizer nitrogen concentration, shoot tissue dry weight, and nutrient concentrations of conventional Saturated Media Extract methods. Preliminary studies indicated that evenly applying 200 ml of water per plug tray cells produced adequate leachate (50 ml) for laboratory analysis of EC, pH, and macro- and micro-nutrients. Impatiens wallerana ‘Super Elfin Red’ and Tagetes erecta ‘Apollo’ were grown in plug trays at three fertilizer concentrations to assess the overall potential of the Pour-through procedure. Analysis of leachate EC, pH, and macro- and micro-nutrients indicated that the Pour-through method of nutrient extraction was sensitive and effective in extracting available nutrients. Pour-through leachate analysis was positively correlated to fertilizer nitrogen concentration and to whole shoot tissue. / Master of Science

Impact of Yeast Nutrient Supplementation Strategies on Hydrogen Sulfide Production during Cider Fermentation

Moore, Amy Nicole 18 May 2020 (has links)
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), is a negative off aroma produced during yeast fermentation and is common in cider and leads to consumer rejection. H2S has a very low odor detection threshold (ODT) and is often described as "rotten egg". H2S is produced when juice is deficient in yeast nutrients, such as amino acids and yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN), which is a common problem in apples since they naturally low in nutrients. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of yeast nutrient addition to cider fermentation by adding four different nitrogen-rich supplements and evaluating the effects on H2S production, fermentation kinetics, and aroma quality during cider. Three yeast strains (M2, EC1118 and ICV OKAY), four yeast nutrients (Fermaid K, Fermaid O, Experimental Nutrient, and DAP) and single addition versus split addition of nutrient were tested. For single addition, all nutrient was added pre-fermentation and for split additions, the first addition was pre-fermentation and the second at one-third total soluble solid (TTS) depletion as measured by °Brix. Sensory evaluation was conducted on selected treatments. The greatest H2S was produced by M2 yeast strain (525 .63 ± 53.31 µg mL-1) while the least H2S on average was produced by EC1118 (118.26 ± 26.33 µg mL-1) and ICV OKAY produced an intermediate amount of H2S (209.26 ± 31.63 µg mL-1). Significant differences were observed between treatments and total H2S production within yeast strains. Yeast strain had the largest effect on H2S production. The second largest effect was yeast nutrient type. Classical text analysis of descriptions of cider aroma were evaluated and 25 attributes were chosen to describe the ciders. Check- all-that-apply (CATA), a rapid sensory technique that askes panelists, revealed that there was no clear pattern between variables tested. This work demonstrates that yeast nutrient type and yeast strain affect H2S production during cider fermentation. These findings provide a basis for improving the effectiveness of strategies used to prevent H2S production in cider fermentation. / Master of Science in Life Sciences / Cider, an alcoholic beverage made from fermenting apple juice, has grown in popularity and production in the United States in recent years. With increased in production and sales there is increase demand for high quality cider, but cider is prone to sensory faults. A common fault in cider aroma includes negative off aromas know as volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These aromas are often described as "rotten eggs", or "cabbage" and lead to consumer rejection of the product. One of the most recognized VSCs is hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which has a characteristic smell of "rotten eggs". These negative off aromas are thought to be produced during yeast fermentation under nutrient lacking conditions. Apples, depending on cultivar, ripeness, and other factors, naturally lack yeast assimilable nitrogen, vitamins, amino acids, and other nutrients needed for a successful yeast fermentation leading to off aromas. Yeast nutrients can be added to apple juice to increase nutrient availability, but little research has been focused on nutrient addition and timing of additions to prevent H2S production in cider. Most research focused on H2S production has been studied in wine must or grape juice. This knowledge may be limited when applying practices to apple juice due to differences in juice chemistry. Providing cider makers with specific scientific strategies to prevent off aromas, such as H2S, is important to the continued growth of the cider industry. This research is focused on exploring aroma quality and H2S prevention strategies in cider by evaluating how yeast nutrient addition via four exogenous nitrogen rich yeast nutrient and timing of yeast nutrient addition affect H2S production, fermentation kinetics, and consumer perception of aroma in cider fermentation.

Release and Transport of Bacteria and Nutrients from Livestock Manure Applied to Pastureland

Soupir, Michelle Lynn 03 September 2003 (has links)
Transport of fecal bacteria and nutrients from point and nonpoint sources to surface water bodies is of significant concern in Virginia and the United States. In Virginia, 4,320 river miles are impaired for one or more beneficial use and 72% of the streams are impaired due to pathogen indicators (VDEQ, 2002). Land applications of manure from confined animal systems and by direct deposit by grazing animals are both major sources of fecal bacteria and nutrients in runoff. Therefore, an understanding of the overland transport mechanisms for fecal bacteria and nutrients is very important for the development of best management practices to reduce loading of pathogens and nutrients to surface water bodies. The objectives of this study were to quantify the release and transport potential of three fecal bacterial indicators: E. coli, Enterococcus, and fecal coliforms; and nitrogen and phosphorus from land applied manure during runoff events. Another objective was to identify the Enterococcus species present in dairy manure and determine which species have the highest potential to be transported by runoff. Release plots were established to study the in-field bacteria and nutrient release. The bacteria and nutrients released from the plots are available to be transported to the edge of the field in runoff. Four manure treatments (turkey litter, liquid dairy manure, cowpies, and none or control) and three land type treatments: pasture with a history of poultry litter application (Turkey Farm), pasture with a history of liquid dairy manure application (Dairy Farm), and pasture with no prior manure application (Tech Research Farm) were studied. During a short but intense rainfall event, the highest bacterial release was measured under the cowpie treatment (E. coli concentrations ranging from 37,000 to >300,000 and FC concentrations ranging from 65,000 to >300,000). Pasturelands with a history of previous manure applications did not release higher bacteria concentrations compared with pasturelands which had never received manure applications. Pasturelands with a history of land application of liquid dairy manure and turkey litter had 143% and 94% higher TSS concentrations available to be transported off the field during overland flow events because of the build up of organic material on the soil surface. TP concentrations released from the cowpie, liquid dairy, and turkey litter treatments were 3.12 mg/L, 3.00 mg/L, and 1.76 mg/L, respectively. Transport plots were developed to measure the concentrations of fecal bacteria and nutrients present in overland flow at the edge of the field. The bacteria flow-weighted concentrations were highest in runoff samples from the plots treated with cowpies (200,000 CFU/100 mL of E. coli and 234,000 CFU/100 mL of FC). The turkey litter had the highest concentration of dissolved phosphorus in runoff from pasturelands (1.22 mg/L), but the cowpie treatment had the highest concentrations of sediment bound phosphorus in runoff (0.73 mg/L). All three treatments investigated in this study contributed to phosphorus loading in surface waters and could potentially increase the risk of eutrophication. Total nitrogen concentrations from the transport plots exceeded the threshold for likely eutrophication problems for all treatments and the total nitrogen concentrations from plots treated with cowpies exceeded the threshold for severe eutrophication problems. The Biolog System, a method of bacterial source tracking, was used to identify the different species of Enterococcus present both in the cowpie source manure and in the runoff collected from the transport plots treated with cowpies. The source manure is dominated by the Enterococcus mundtii (55%), Enterococcus gallinarum (20%), Enterococcus faecium (10%), and Enterococcus faecalis (10%). Enterococcus faecalis had the highest percentage of isolates present in runoff with a total of 37%, followed by Enterococcus mundtii which was present in 21% of the runoff events and Enterococcus gallinarum and Enterococcus faecium (11%). Improvements in understanding the bacterial release and overland processes will enhance modeling of bacteria and nutrient transport, and provide a basis for a more realistic evaluation of the impacts of management practices implementation. The data from this study will serve as a baseline to model the release and transport of fecal bacteria and nutrients from agricultural watersheds to surface waters. / Master of Science

Financial costs and economic tradeoffs of alternative manure management policies on dairy and dairy/poultry farms in Rockingham County, Virginia

Parsons, Robert Lee 27 August 2007 (has links)
This study examines farm-level financial costs and environmental benefits from three alternative manure management policies, incorporating all manure (INCORP), limit nitrogen applications to agronomic recommendations (NLIMIT), and phosphorus applications limited to crop removals (PLIMIT), on representative 60, 100, and 150-cow dairy and dairy/poultry farms. Current nutrient applications are manure-based, with each farm substituting poultry litter for commercial fertilizer. Potential field-level nutrient losses estimated by EPIC, a soil/plant growth simulation model, indicate the highest nitrogen losses on grass hay and pasture and the highest phosphorus losses on no-till com. The highest nutrient applications and nutrient losses occur on the 60 and 100-cow dairy/poultry farms. INCORP is ineffective at significantly lowering nutrient losses. NLIMIT reduces nitrogen losses by 30% and phosphorus losses by 6%. PLIMIT is the most effective policy, lowering both nitrogen and phosphorus losses over 34%. The largest farm-level reduction in nutrient losses is on the 60-cow dairy/poultry farm. Ryelage was the only crop yield that varies under the alternative policies. Financial simulation with FLIPSIM indicates that INCORP and NLIMIT do not affect farm financial performance. PLIMIT reduces farm net cash income and ending net worth as farms substitute commercial fertilizer for poultry litter. PLIMIT does not cause dairy farms to go out of business but does significantly reduce their cash available for family living expenses below minimum requirements. Dairy/poultry farms maintain adequate cash incomes under PLIMIT. PLIMIT lowers net cash income on all county dairy and dairy/poultry farms by 8% to 16% under litter disposal costs of $10 to $40 per ton. The smaller land-intensive 60-cow dairy/poultry farm has the largest decrease in cash income while the smallest decrease is on the 150-cow dairy/poultry farm. The 100 and 150-cow dairy/poultry farms maintain higher ending net worth than corresponding size dairy farms at disposal costs of $40 per ton. County net cash farm income declines by $2.57 to $5.16 per pound of reduced nitrogen losses and $15.68 to $31.44 per pound of reduced phosphorus losses. The study indicates that NLIMIT reduces nitrogen losses without affecting farm incomes whereas reducing both nitrogen and phosphorus losses under PLIMIT substantially reduces farm income. Nutrient management plans need to be directed at smaller land-intensive farms to achieve substantial nutrient loss reductions. / Ph. D.

Does coastal western hemlock respond to fertilization?

Klinka, Karel January 2001 (has links)
Response to fertilization is a function of the degree to which nutrients are limiting growth, the capacity of individual trees to respond to nutrient inputs, the degree to which other factors limit growth, and the possible extrinsic effects of treatment (e.g., root mortality due to fertilizer-induced soil pH effects). Recognition and examination of these factors is essential if response to fertilization is to be predictable. Over the past 25 years numerous western hemlock fertilizer trials have shown responses ranging from negative to positive with no clear trends. Theories for this erratic response include: (a) different nutritional requirements during different stages of stand development; (b) high native N availability or low supplies of other nutrients (P and S, in particular); (c) differential adverse effects of N fertilizers on surface roots, mycorrhizal populations and P nutrition; (d) a requirement for slow release N; and (e) induced water stress. The objective of this study was to develop site-specific guidelines for western hemlock fertilization decision-making for industrial use. This study reports on the first and third growing-season response to two different fertilizer treatments, and identification of possible relationships between fertilizer response and site and stand conditions.

Influence of salal on height growth of coastal douglas-fir

Klinka, Karel, Carter, R. E. (Reid E.), Wang, Qingli, Feller, M. C. (Michael Charles) January 2001 (has links)
The influence of salal on tree growth has attained considerable attention in coastal British Columbia. Field observations, surveys, and studies in the CWH zone have indicated poor growth performance of crop tree species in salal-dominated plantations and natural immature and old-growth stands. Where sites have been burned and planted, tree growth has improved; similar effects have been observed for naturally regenerated stands. Immature stands that developed after wind disturbance or harvesting feature rapid growth and nearly complete absence of salal. As studies have shown that ericaceous plants negatively impact tree growth, the salal on potential harvest sites has been considered undesirable. This study examined (1) the possible influence of salal on the stand, soil nutrient status and site index, and (2) the relations between site index, salal, plant communities, and site in disturbed, immature, coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems. We compared vegetation and environmental characteristics of 101 ecosystems, and examined differences in foliar and soil nutrient characteristics and site index between stands with high and low salal cover through analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis.

Wheat seeds inoculated with Azospirillum brasilense bacteria can provide biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), but has been observed more pronounced effect of this inoculation in the initial plant growth (phytohormonal effect), thereby, with the further development of root system, the nutrients and water uptake may be greater. Thus, the growth, productivity and nutrients removal from the wheat crop may be higher, but the response to this inoculation may vary according to the affinity of the bacterium with the wheat cultivars. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dry matter accumulation the accumulation of dry matter and nutrients uptake at different growth stages, nutrients export by grains, yield components and grains yield of wheat cultivars inoculated or not with Azospirillum brasilense. The experiment was conducted in Selvíria - MS, in a distroferric Oxisol clayey in no-till system. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications, with the treatments arranged in a factorial 3 x 2, with three wheat cultivars (CD 116, IPR CATUARA TM and IAC 385) with or without seed inoculation by Azospirillum brasilense (300 ml ha-1 product with strains Abv5 Abv6 (2x108 guarantee UFC mL-1). Also proceeded regression analysis in a split plot scheme with four replications, where the plots were the six treatments described above, and the subplots, seven plants collections seasons (before of tillering, tillering and before nitrogen topdressing, leaf flag, booting, flowering, doughy grain and physiological maturity), for the accumulation of dry matter, extraction and export of nutrients. Azospirillum brasilense inoculation provided greater leaf chlorophyll index (LCI) and accumulation of roots dry matter, regardless of the wheat cultivar. The wheat cultivars uptake similar total amounts of nutrients, but the uptake per ton of grain produced was differentiated for K, Mg, S, B, Cu, Mn and Zn. Total nutrient extraction or per ton of grain produced in descending order was N>K>P>S>Ca>Mg>Fe>Mn>Zn>B>Cu, with or without inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense. The highest total removal of K, Ca, Mg, S and Mn were obtained without inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense; however, this diazotrophic bacterium provided higher removal of N, P, K, Ca and Mg per ton of grain produced and Zn total. The highest relative removal (above 50% that is uptake) was the Zn, Cu, P, N and B and Mg only with inoculation. The CD 116 cultivar was the most productive and provided the highest total nutrients removal, despite the lower uptake of K, Mg, S, Cu, Mn and Zn by grains produced in relation to the other cultivars. The inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense interferes differently in wheat cultivars, and cultivar CD 116 obtained the highest grain yield when inoculated.

Fatores reguladores da decomposição foliar: uma abordagem sobre fragmentadores e decompositores / Regulator factors of leaf breakdown: an approach on shredders and decomposers

Biasi, Cristiane 21 February 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / According to the River Continuum Concept, in small rivers, corresponding to ~ 80% of river basins, the main energy source for the trophic chain is the material produced in riparian zones, especially leaves. This material goes through the process of decomposition, which is responsible for the nutrients cycling and maintenance of aquatic communities. In this context, the objective of this study is to investigate the effects of physical, chemical and physiological traits of plant species on microbial activity and fragmentation, and as a consequence on decomposition rates. In the first chapter we investigated the activity of Phylloicus fragmentation in relation to food resources with different leaf traits. We found that the shredders have their food activity stimulated by substrate with less amount of lignin, which facilitates fungus conditioning and promotes the palatability of the detritus. In the second chapter, we investigated the feeding preference and assimilation of C3 and C4 carbon by Phylloicus and Aegla longirostri. We found that the shredders consume more the C4 species, but do not alter its isotopic signature and the intense activity of the hyphomycetes in the leaves C4 stimulated the consumption by the shredders. In the third chapter we investigated the effect of nutrient enrichment on soil and water on leaf nutritional quality and decomposition rates. We showed that the fertilized trees promoted leaves more nutritious than leaves of unfertilized trees. In addition, we found that the effect of nutrient enrichment on water was stronger than the nutrient enrichment of leaves in the decomposition process. Within the three chapters, we verified that the activities of the shredders and fungi are influenced by the characteristics of the leaves and are related to the riparian vegetation, especially by C3 carbon. We verified that the structural compounds are determinant for the microbial colonization and consequently for the fragmentation and litter decomposition. We also verified that the enrichment of nutrients in the water may be more important for the process of leaf decomposition than the nutrients in the leaves.

Relationships between coastal Douglas-fir site index and synoptic categorical measures of site quality

Klinka, Karel, Carter, R. E. (Reid E.), Chourmouzis, Christine January 2001 (has links)
Knowledge of ecological characteristics of trees, sites and tree growth on different sites is fundamental for silvicultural decision-making and planning. With the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification in place, silvicultural management in British Columbia has been given an ecological foundation; however, relationships between growth and site have not yet been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine how height growth of Douglas-fir within the drier portion of the CWH zone varies with site. We adopted site index (m @ 50 yr bh) as a species-specific measure of forest productivity, recognizing that it indicates height growth performance at a selected point in time. If forest productivity is correlated with ecological measures of site quality, what site factors should be used to quantify the relationships? Because of compensating effects, the numerous site factors can be reduced to four primary (synoptic) factors that directly affect plant establishment and growth: climate (light and temperature), soil moisture, soil nutrients, and soil aeration (not used in this study).

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the application of annual dosages of Sewage sludge (Ss) during a period of ten years of experimentation, on soil nitrogen response, the nutritional stage, the grain and dry matter yield of maize plants, the As and Ba contents in soil, leaves and grain of maize. Two experiments were carried out in Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil, in randomized blocks under field conditions, in Typic Eutrothox (TH) and Typic Haplorthox. The treatments were, Ss applications rates (5; 10 and 20 Mg ha-1 DW) and a control (without Ss and with NPK fertilization). The average content of total N showed decrease with the rising of depth and increase with the dosages in both soils. The results showed NO3 --N moving to the lower soil layers, in TH. NO4 +-N content in TE and TH showed uneven behavior with the rising of the soil depth, prevailing over NO3 --N until depth layer of 0,60-0,80 m in TE. Depending of the Ss used, soil type and applied dosage the Ss provoked increasing of B, Mg, Mo, and Zn content over the level considered adequate for corn. There was difference between treatments in soil As content in TH, with concentration decrease by the increase of Ss dosage. Ba content determined in TH was affected by treatments showing content decrease by the Ss dosage increase. There was difference between treatments in Ba content extractable by Mehlich 3, and Ba content decrease by increasing of Ss dosage in both soils. In TE As content in corn grain increased by the effect of Ss dosages applied. In both soils decrease of Ba content was found in grain by the effect of Ss treatments. In TH foliar As and Ba content of control treatment differs from Ss treatments, observing decrease of foliar As and Ba concentration by increase of Ss dosage. As and Ba added to the TE and TH by sewage sludge rates didn't affect dry matter and grain yield of maize plants / Doutor
