Occupational Transition of Smoking Cessation in Women: More than Just Butting Out

Luck, Kerrie 27 March 2013 (has links)
This qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the question, How do women cigarette smokers experience and perceive their occupational transition from smoker to non-smoker? The sample consisted of seven women, aged 35-55, living in New Brunswick, Canada, who quit smoking for at least twelve months, but no longer than 24 months. Data were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews. The occupation of smoking was shown to be a valued and meaningful occupation with both positive and negative aspects that influenced the occupational transition process. The occupational transition of smoking cessation was described as a cyclical journey that required building skills and occupational competence, not only to support occupational adaptation and engagement in meaningful occupations, but also to overcome barriers and occupational losses throughout the transition process. This also fostered the occupational identity of non-smoker, by allowing the women to become and express the self they wanted to be.

Occupational Adaptation in Individuals with Ehler-Danlos Hypermobility Type: A Qualitative Study of Personal Perspectives

Nahi, Pia January 2021 (has links)
ABSTRACT Purpose:  This study aims to describe how major symptoms of pain and fatigue affect occupational performance and adaptation of individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobility Type (hEDS). Method: Eleven individuals with hEDS (2017 diagnostic criteria) were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data was analysed following Giorgi’s modified five steps descriptive phenomenological method.  Results:  The following six occupational adaptations emerged during data analysis: Experiences of body unconsciousness, conserving energy in activities, goal setting, restricted physical and social environment, new family role, and healthcare system interventions. Conclusions:  Experiences of severe fatigue and episodes of severe pain affected the occupational adaptation of daily performance, routines, occupational choices and social and physical environment. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Occupational therapists working with individuals with hEDS need to take into consideration the impacts of chronic pain and fatigue on occupational performance and identity.

Understanding the occupational adaptation process of individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta and their families to promote participation and occupational engagement : A scoping review

Männi, Kadi January 2023 (has links)
Introduction: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a condition that affects the whole family on many levels and is important to consider the management of the disease and its impact on occupational participation and engagement in daily activities. Aim: To explore the natural occupational adaptation process (OAP) and its impact on daily activities among individuals and families with OI. Method: Using Arksey and O’Malley’s five-step Scoping Study Framework (2005), a scoping review of 24 articles from seven online databases and literature hand-searching was conducted. Data extraction was performed for all studies that met the eligibility and quality criteria. Five main themes containing several subthemes were emerged in qualitative inductive thematic analysis. Findings: Findings from 24 reports highlight the social and emotional impact along with the physical challenges of living with OI that direct into adaptation process. Different occupational adaptation strategies that emerged in the data help overcome physical deficits and psychosocial implications and facilitate occupational participation and engagement in meaningful activities. Conclusions: The study confirmed these individuals’ and families’ high coping skills, despite experiencing many obstacles in their daily life. Significance: To better understand the adaptation process in OI population and give practical implications for occupational therapists to offer a better support these families need.
